Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891. Women’s basketball began in the winter of 1892 at Smith College when a physical education teacher began teaching young women the game of basketball. However, women’s college basketball has come a long way since then. I will explain how the game of basketball is played and the life of a women’s college basketball player at the University of Wisconsin- River Falls.
First I will talk about the material aspects of the game, who participates and some general information. Basketball is played in a gym; the basketball court is rectangular with a basketball hoop on each end of the court. The official measurements of a women’s college basketball court are 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. The distance from the ground to the rim is 10 feet. The basketball rim is 18 inches in diameter, the backboard is 6 feet wide and 42 inches tall. The foul line is 15 feet from the front of the backboard and the 3-point line is 20 feet and 9 inches away from the basketball hoop. The basketball itself is 28.5 inches in circumference. A basketball team consists of normally 12-18 players who are freshmen-seniors and then you have your coaching staff. Normally you have a head coach, assistant coach, student coach and some other people who help out. A head coach is the highest ranking coach out of all the coaches, they also get paid the most and have the overall decision. The assistant coaches help the head coach, they normally do more of the
In this photo, the women are more reserved, and do not seem to be as aggressive as the basketball we know today. They possibly could have not been displaying as much athleticism because of their constraining clothing, such as the long skirts and the collared shirt. The opinion that women are not as athletic as men and do not have the same strengths began early and created a stereotype regarding women's basketball. Moving forward to 1928, the University of Tennessee's yearbook, The Volunteer, showcases men's and women's uniforms during that year. At this point in history, women had earned their right to vote from the 19th amendment and were being more progressive.
During the winter of 1892 in a town in Massachusetts a physical education teacher, Dr. James Naismith, at a YMCA school created a game where young men could play indoors aside from going outside in the freezing cold. To be prepared for the game, Dr. Naismith came up with some rules for the game, gathered two peach baskets for hoops, a soccer ball, and coached the first basketball game in history.
Coaching basketball is about strategizing and directing the movements and actions of a basketball team or individual player. Coaches strategize and scout opposing teams and find ways to defeat them as easily as possible. A successful basketball coach needs to now the understanding of how to play the game. A basketball coach must be able to manage the duties of the job by recruiting the top players, get them in shape, make a team, motivate players and teach them how to play the game of basketball. Coaching is usually done by a single person, with the help of one or more assistants. A coach is the face of the team, helping it achieve the public relations goals of the organization and build a positive image that will improve recruiting. (Edmunds). A coach is responsibiable for setting up and an environment so that the team can use its skills and abilities to their full potential. Therefor a coach has to make a game plan for each game, so that his team will be ready for the next opponent. A coach has to know his team and the opponent abilities to be able to match his team up with the opponent. A coach must know to mix the players who can start right away and players he can develop into starters. A coach may want to put 12-15 players on the roster just in case of injuries. To get ready for the season the coach starts putting in offensive and defensive plays the will run and teach the players situational plays to fit the team style and running practices. During a game a coach has
“According anywhere from Australia to the United States and everywhere in between the game of basketball is played.” (Faurschou, “History of basketball”). The game is played anywhere where you can get a ball and something to throw the ball through. “G.L Pierce patented basketball on June 25, 1929.” (Bellis, “Basketball-James Naismith”). Basketball became an official Olympic sport in the 1936 game.
The game of basketball was invented by a gym teacher Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
In sociology, there are 3 paradigms. There is the conflict theory perspective, the symbolic-interaction perspective and the structural-functionalist perspective. From a conflict paradigm point of view, the essay would focus on gender and how the assumption that girls lack the same level of strength and stamina as men. The WNBA (Women National Basketball League) doesn’t get the same amount of respect as the males do in the NBA (National Basketball League). Another issue could be that the NBA players have a higher annual salary than an average teacher. A structural-functionalist approach could be focused on how it creates jobs (the NBA) and academically too. Basketball could also be focused on how
We can all agree that basketball is almost becoming popular around the world. So many people play this sport but do people know how basketball started and how it evolute throughout the years since basketball was borned? So like every other sports and creations, there has to be a inventor and in basketball there was a man by the name of Dr. James Naismith. “Created in 1891 in a Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA gymnasium has grown into a game played worldwide by more than 300 million people”(historybits.com). So this game has been out for a very long period of time with many changing of the rules in basketball throughout the history. When it was first played in the late 1800s, there were different rules and even different looking basketball. As for the rules, originally there would be 10 people on the court but it first started with 18 people on the court which after couple of years it changed to only 10 people. Substitution was also different and the rule for this was at first no one can enter until the next game. “The rule was changed in 1920 to allow a player to re-enter the game one time. In 1934, the rule was expanded to allow players to re-enter the game twice, and, in 1945 the rule was finally changed to permit players to return to the game an unlimited number of times”(hooptactics.com). The first basketball looked very alike a football but round. The backboards were made out of straight wood and the baskets were made out of peach baskets or square boxes. There was only
The origin of the WNBA. Women's basketball started in 1892. Basketball was invented for aggressive boys when it was to cold to go outside. They wondered if it was a good activity for women. well they thought it was but there was a couple of rules. You could only hold the ball for three seconds, you could only dribble three times, they had to stay in their spots, and they
7. If either side make three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the meantime making a foul).
When people think of basketball, they think of elite male players such as Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Stephen Curry. Those people rarely think of talented female players such as Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Elena Delle Donne, and Brittney Griner. Since the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) first opened in 1996, the interest in professional sports for women has increased. The creation of the WNBA has opened up a world of opportunities for women who want to pursue their dream of playing professional basketball in the US. The WNBA has overcome impossible odds to become successful, and has empowered women to strive and turn their dreams into a reality.
Purpose: to inform the audience about basketball such as the basketball rules and history and development of basketball.
Although men and women’s basketball are closer to being equal than softball and baseball, the leagues are still separate. America has a women’s league and a men’s league and never the two shall meet. A woman is not allowed in the NBA since she has the WNBA. The separation is strong, obvious, and seemingly permanent. Like basketball, they created softball to play indoors during the winter. The game earned the name softball and due to its easier properties was often “regarded as baseball’s stepchild” (Ring, p. 60). They passed the game down to women, as it seemed safe enough to limit the risk of injury. And so the separation began.
It takes time to really learn the ins and outs of the game and also to get a good handle on things. The game of basketball started in Springfield Massachusetts and has now become on of the most popular sports nationally known. The game was designed
The start of basketball began in the early 1890s. Brian Faurschou acknowledges that "Well before James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891, the peoples of Mesoamerica had a very similar game where the point was to get a ball through a hoop." Ancient Mexican people such as the Aztecs and the Mayans had very similar games to basketball, but instead of a ball they used their conquered foes skulls. He also implies that "The first basketball type game may have been played by the early Olmec people of Ancient Mexico as early as 500 years ago" (Faurschou).
Within Hollywood’s movies depiction of drug addiction, many have failed to represent all true aspects that come along with such lifestyles. The movie, The Basketball Diaries, is based off a novel Jim Carroll wrote from his own diary entries. As a teenager growing up in the sixties, Carroll reveals his progression of drug abuse which eventually leads him addicted to heroin.Heroin is a white powder derived from morphine found in opium. It is commonly prescribed as a painkiller, but is also a popular street drug. The director casted Leonardo DiCaprio as Jimmy, and concentrates on creating the character as a stereotypical drug abuser. DiCaprio’s most captivating scene is when he is going through heroin
