She states that there is no problem with gay marriage and it's all a matter of separating the church and state. When viewed historically, great change has happened in a short period of time, in the movement for same-sex marriage, given that until recently, no society in thousands of years has ever allowed it.

While some states have began to embrace the civil rights of all American people and allowing both hetero- and homo-sexual couples to marry, some states have done quite the opposite and banned same sex marriages and unions. Not all Americans feel so strongly about legalizing same sex marriage. Those against same sex marriage believe marriage has been defined as being between a man and a woman. However, that has not always been true, as explained in the beginning of this paper, the ancient people commonly wed the same gender and them and also had same sex sexual relations (ProCon.org). Marriages since 2011 have been at a new low, with only 52 percent of adults being married (Yen). However gays are fighting for the right to marry who they love, while heterosexual couples take that for granted. Divorce rates are currently lingering around 40-50% that is without gays being able to be married in many states. Gay marriage has been a controversial topic that is highly debated all around the globe, containing many of its own varying viewpoints and beliefs on both sides of the argument. Those who oppose same-sex marriage believe that it is a sacred bond that can only be kept sacred between a man and a woman, and that same-sex marriage will ruin the sanctity of marriage. Also, if gay marriage is allowed they believe that it will open the door to other non-traditional relationships to be accepted such as polygamy. Finally other key oppositions come from religious beliefs and standards. When American citizens hear the word “gay,” what is the first connection that pops into their mind? Does it mean happiness, love, or does it have a negative connotation? Throughout the years, the world epidemic on gay marriage has always been a controversy in the press. In the 1600s, if a gay man or woman practiced sodomy, they were put to death (ProQuest Staff “LGBT”). From the 1600s to the current day, gay rights are still a critical political debate in today’s society that needs a solution. For one to understand at this problem, he or she needs to analyze the causes and effect of this solution.

Unfortunately, it was not always viewed as such. Throughout the majority of American History, same-sex marriage was outlawed and slandered. Then, in April of 2000, Vermont signed a first of its kind civil unions bill that provided same-sex couples with the full benefits of marriage. By 2015, 37 states had followed Vermont into this revolution of marriage, and what it all means. Finally, on June 26, 2015, a Supreme Court decision guaranteed the right for same-sex couples to marry in all 50 states. Once again, the basis of legality in marriage equality lies in our Constitution. It states that everyone is created equal; and to withhold the right and benefits of marriage from someone because of who they wish to marry simply defies the Constitution. The plain inequality in disallowing members of the same sex to marry has been noted by Supreme Court justices time and time again. Be that as it may, America was founded on religious principles. The topic of homosexual marriages, or the marrying of two people of the same sex, is rather disputed among the majority of people in today’s society. Only small amounts of the population have opinions that are strongly favoring one side of the debate. For most of society who are the middle-of-the-road citizens, it is a tough call to make one way or the other. The main topics that are disputed are raising children in a same-sex household, the capacity of churches to allow such a marriage, and the integrity of a marriage as a legal document. These arguments will be expressed through the viewpoints of Andrew Sullivan and William Bennett. Sullivan is the author of the essay “Let Gays Marry” which was printed by Newsweek in June of 1996.

The controversial issue of gay marriage has recently been very much part of the centre of media speculation, due to the fact that Australian Labour Party Leader, Bill Shorten, has lately been aver strong supporter of the American legislation which legalised gay marriage throughout the United States. Today’s society has many strong opinions on who people should marry, especially when the couple is same sex. Marriage is a commitment between two people, and overtime homosexuals have been denied their necessary rights as a human.
