This novel is about a community where each person is the same. Everybody in this community go by certain rules and if they do not follow those rules they are punished. Everyone is to act the same in this book. Every person is assigned a job when they become a twelve and they are to work at the job until they go to the house of the old. This book is explained by Lois Lowry the author is explaining a whole different world than ours in this world he describes a person called the giver who is the receiver who hands off the job to Jonas one of the main characters who asks the receiver about all his memories and about what his job will be like. Jones had become the receiver. the giver gives him training and tells him what memories were like, the giver tells him why were like giver tells him why were like.

In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, the receivers are the only people who have feelings and memories. The elders are the people who choose what the best is for their people in the community and sometimes they go to the receiver for help on making the right decisions. The people from the community do not see color, or have freedom on making a decision for them. There is no love, feelings, and grandparents. Jonas is assigned to be the next receiver of the community; He was trained by the giver, who transfers memories of the pain and pleasures of life, who also shows him the truth and reality that is hidden to the community. Jonas’s community does not represent the ideal of society because there are no choices or distinctions between men

     This book is about a boy names Jonas. Jonas lives in a futuristic society where there is no pain, fear, war, and hatred. There is also no prejudice, since everyone looks and acts basically the same, there is very little competition. They have also eliminated choice.

Imagine having everything you wished for. You would live in a perfect world. But every world has imperfections and you come across to realizing...a perfect world doesn’t exist. Within time, you come from an illusion to reality. You choose your journey and it starts here. The community is a separate environment from the world and has many rules to live by. The rules can vary to be severe consequences. It includes sameness, no memories, and family unit regulations. The kids end their childhood at the age of 12 by receiving their life assignment. The main character, Jonas is chosen to be the receiver of memory. He is reliable to hold everyone's feelings, hopes, and devotions. In The Giver the author Lois Lowry uses the theme of change to reveal that growing up in “the community” is a non-stressful and organized environment but Jonas finds the real world a whole different place when he receives memories about strong feelings and hardships, intellects the word “love”, and how important it is to be an individual.

The setting of The Giver takes place in a fictional community known as the “Sameness”. Life here is supposed to be "perfect" because there is no pain or suffering. They don’t have to take

The author Lois Lowry grew up all around the world when she was a child due to her dad being in the U.S. Army. Since father was a dentist in the army and traveled the world she had gone to many countries which inspired her writing. At one point she had lived in Tokyo where she went to an American school on the base during her junior high years. One of her literary works later in her life is, The Giver, which had won a Newbery Award. In The Giver, the setting is a utopian society where the characters have no feelings, no memories, and no choices that they are able to make on their own. The names of the characters also have hidden meanings and relations behind them using allusion to recreate a religous matter along with how the novel

And like many recognized authors Lowry has been asked again and again, “Where did you get this idea?” For each novel written by Lowry the inspiration arises from diverse occasions from her life. In The Giver Lowry explores the new territory of a fantasy realm of society that is free from pain, disorder, and overpopulation; but in a world without love, color, and memories the perfect society turns to dystopia. (Novels for Students) As an explanation for the origins of The Giver Lois Lowry, in her Newberry Medal acceptance speech, compares her inspiration for the novel to the river Jonas looks into, seeing the world differently for the first time. How would it feel if this world didn’t let people have choices, didn’t let people share, or if they didn’t let people celebrate birthdays, holidays, or just celebrate anything? Well that’s what it was like for Jonas in The Giver. Jonas lives in the future in a community where The Giver is the only one who knows everything, but soon all that changed for Jonas. He became the the community 's new Receiver of Memory, and soon Jonas learns the terrible secrets of this “utopian” community. Later on as he learns some more about the community’s secrets he makes a plan to leave the community, and to take Gabe with him so he wouldn’t get released.(which means they die, but the community doesn’t understand that) In this book choices, sharing, and celebrations would have made The Giver community more positive.

Could you ever imagine living in a world that is controlled. After reading both the non-fiction article, as well the selected passage by Lois Lowry it was obvious that both communities were being ruled by a strict government. The selected passage is about their strict government that made the community a “perfect world” by not letting them see and do certain things. The non-fiction article is about North Korea's world and how they also limit certain things such as, freedom and occupations. Both articles show the challenges of their world.

In the novel The Giver, Lois Lowry insists that individual needs including choice, emotion, and diversity surpasse the needs of a community’s perfection involving sameness, organization, and “equality”. The Giver is an engaging book that truly drives you to wonder what is more important, individual or community needs? Lowry has Jonas flee his community because of the lack of individuality.

Lea Vilna-Santos Mrs. English, 7th September 1st, 2015 The Giver, by: Lois Lowry Entry Log 8: Chapters 15-16: Questions 6 and 7: In Chapters 15-16, Jonas shows signs of change and of coming of age when the Giver shows him a memory of love and family, but when he asks his parents if they love him they give Jonas a brief lesson on Precision of Language. Jonas starts showing that he wants to change their community. It all started when the Giver transmitted his favorite memory that Jonas loves.

When I was younger I was raised in a household where I was taught that lying is a sin. My parents wanted my siblings and I to make sure that we always told the truth even when it was difficult to. We had a rule in the household about only eating one candy bar a day, but someone kept eating two. Back then I was a complete rule freak. So I decided to hold interrogations against my family members.

“Our future is created from choices we make in every moment”-Deepak Chopra I feel this quote represents why the freedom of choice is necessary. This quote represents freedom and how it can revolve around your life and how it can shape you you are. You can also learn from freedom of choice, because you learn from your mistakes. We should be able to make our own decisions, unlike in the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry where everyone does the same thing every day.

In The Giver, by Lois Lowry, Chapters seventeen through eighteen show that Jonas realizes that he now experiences a new depth of feelings such as curiosity and pain. In chapter seventeen, Jonas refuses to participate in a game with Fiona, Asher and the younger children because he recognized it as a war game. He tried to explain to his friends that the game was mocking a horrible reality, but they are only annoyed with Jonas. As a result, Jonas left his friends and trudged home thinking about the memories that the game brought back to him and he also realized that his friends and the children would never be able to understand his feelings of love, sadness, and hatred. For example, “ You ruined it, Asher said in an irritated voice ” ( Lowry 168).

In the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, the author makes it clear through the main character Jonas that freedom and safety need to find an equal balance. Lowry shows the importance of deep emotions and family through Jonas. Jonas becomes the new receiver of memory and learns about the past. He also learned about the way it was when people knew what love was. Jonas’ father releases newborn children because they don’t weight the correct amount of weight or they don’t sleep well through the night. Release is a nice way of saying kill; the people of the community don’t know what kill means. They don’t have the freedom to expand their vocabulary.
