Francis Bacon was a British artist who was highly praised by the public and proclaimed the greatest artist of the 20th century. Though some have criticized him for his vague and harsh imagery, a lot more people have praised his work for its meaning, passion, and his abilities to materialize the good and bad on certain issues by using half-abstract figures and triptychs as his preference. In comparing and contrasting an early piece of his art work such as “Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion”, which was compelling and showed an originality that earned him wide creditability, to a late piece called “Study for the Head of George Dyer”, one can see the evolution of Mr. Bacon as an artist and most importantly as a person …show more content…
While using a thick paint brush for the background and the abstract composition in the painting, he also took time to emphasize the different characteristics in the faces of the abstract composition. By taking advantage of the triptych format, he made the face of the composition tilted in different directions which made it seem like the person was fearful or disturbed by other items in the piece. Also, the orange in the background blends in well with the other colors in the painting and helps the figures, shapes, and the facial expression in the piece standout better in representation. Texture was another technique that was used heavily by Mr. Bacon to visually convey several elements in this piece, such as the sphere and round shaped objects, the dark brush stroke used to represent the shadow under the face, and the heavily applied white brush stroke representing normal facial features on a composition. Also, in distorting the face in the piece, Mr. Bacon captured the mood and the message that he intended for the audience to feel as they viewed his work of art. Mr. Bacon’s technique was the reason he was such a great artist, he used the technique of free hand to distort the composition and was still able to draw the different facial characteristics and expressions. In viewing this painting deeply, the setting that Mr. Bacon creates a feeling of abandonees because the use of dark colors in background. Also only see one
In “Bacon’s Declaration in the Name of the People”, Nathaniel Bacon lists every major offense of Sir William Berkeley, many of which collide with one another to display how the governor’s actions and inactions built upon each other to create turmoil for the people of Virginia. However, Berkeley defends himself and proclaims Bacon a traitor in, “The Declaration and Remonstrance of Sir William Berkeley his most sacred Majesties Governor and Captain Generall of Virginia”. In order to gain the king’s favor, both men write separate declarations, but one has everything to lose while the other has everything to gain.
In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon rebelled and held a revolt in Colonial Virginia. High taxes, low prices for tobacco, and resentment against special privileges given those close to the governor, Sir William Berkeley, provided the background for the uprising. These factors made the rebellion inevitable. All of the chaos was precipitated by Governor Berkeley's failure to defend the frontier against attacks by Native Americans. Bacon commanded two unauthorized but successful expeditions against the tribes and was then elected to the new House of Burgesses, which Berkeley had been forced to convene. Berkeley then sent out a warrant for his arrest and Bacon was put in jail. Bacon soon was released and he immediately gathered his supporters,
Texture and pattern are very easy to identify in this painting. The street’s cobblestones show texture and pattern in the way that they are arranged. Texture is also demonstrated through the paint strokes on the buildings, the tree, and even the sky. These thick, uneven strokes add a layer of depth and texture to all elements of the painting.
Previous to the American Revolution, Bacon’s Rebellion was one of the largest revolts in history, and accordingly its consequences include the American Revolution. It was the war between the English and the Indians, and the civil war between the colonists of Jamestown and their government. But it was also the fierce struggle between two powerful leaders with very different beliefs. The African slaves and white indentured servants joined together to fight side by side against their common "enemies."
It is almost a reflection of the man’s trident. That same pitchfork shape also appears in the window of the house that sits in between both figure’s heads. Repetition can also be seen in the dotted pattern of the woman’s outfit, which also appears in the material of the curtain that hangs in the house’s window. The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures seem to be stretched, and narrowed. The pitchfork’s slender prongs and the green stripes on the man’s shirt also add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood boards that make up the house and the barn, keep the viewer’s eye moving up and down the picture plane. Wood’s use of verticality in this painting is overwhelming.
Sir Francis Drake is known for England's defeat of the Spanish Armada. He was a sea dog and he sailed around the world. Drake was actually the first one to sail around the world since Magellan died in his journey.

Bacon's Rebellion may have served as the first civil uprising within the early settlements of America. Led by Nathaniel Bacon, a militia of armed freedmen, slaves, and poor colonist banded together to fight against a government that they felt was corrupt and did not have their best interests in mind. This paper will examine some of the major causes that led to the rebellion such as the increased westward expansion by the colonists, the civil unrest growing between the social classes, rising taxes, and disputes between colonists and neighboring indian tribes.

Nathanial Bacon was a young, bold, active, and powerful individual (Beverly). Bacon was born in England, taught at Cambridge, and later moved to Virginia with his wife, Elizabeth, in 1974 (Tarter). Bacon graduated from the University of Cambridge and studied the law. Elizabeth’s father, the Sir Edward Duke of Suffolk, opposed their marriage. Her disinheritance by her father contributed to Bacon’s decision to migrate to North America. When they moved they got two plantations paid for by his father. Bacon owned the two plantations along the Jamestown northern frontier. By his social position and financial means, Bacon was brought up in the governor’s council in
Historians decide what parts of history are important, and those that are not. Historiography is how history is recorded, and it has a role in Bacon’s Rebellion. Historians chose what was important about it, and weaved it into a story. But, some facts may have been left out. Depending on what story is chosen, who tells the story, when it is told, and which evidence is selected to construct it, the historical account could have changed dramatically through historian’s interpretation. Through a compilation of reliable articles and facts, a story has been woven together. You will hear about the character of Nathaniel Bacon, the events leading up to the rebellion, the actual rebellion, and the aftermath of the rebellion.
Berkeley did not care about the farmers. It was obvious that the only thing he
Bacon's Rebellion is probably the best example of what the rich and powerful were afraid of in a sense poor whites and poor blacks fighting as one it was this fear that caused the rich and powerful to invent laws to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. Bacons Rebellion began the English settlers started inland to the west, which meant moving into the natives land. this was sure to cause tension between the two sides another main factor to the rebellion was the dry summer that was causing crops to wither and die. Bacon was elected to the House of Burgesses and his radical views about Indians lead to him being put in prison. when two thousand Virginians marched upon the prison bacon was released. shortly after this bacon took his
St. Francis of Assisi was born in Umbria in the year 1182. He was a child every father hoped for, he was filled with life, a determined and courageous individual. But this son, his favourite, was the one who broke Peter Bernardone’s heart. The boy turned on his father, and in a vicious event that eventually resulted into a public scene. St. Francis of Assisi stepped away from his father, his business and left his father in a state of immense emotional suffering.
The first appropriation, ‘Head VI’, was part of Bacon’s ‘1949 Head’ series where he based the figure in the painting on Velazquez’ ‘Innocent X’. Up until around the mid-1960s, Bacon created approximately 45 appropriations of Velazquez’ painting. While not completely known why Bacon was obsessed with the ‘Innocent X’ portrait, it is speculated that it may have been a psychological connection Bacon made in regards to his sexuality or the ‘Holy Father’ image reminding him of his traumatic feelings towards his father, of whom his was rejected and abused.
