In The Essential Gandhi chapter 1, Louis Fischer includes excerpts from Gandhi’s book, The Story of My Experiments. In the excerpts, Gandhi offers a glimpse of his parents’ life and his family tree and describes important events and notable aspects of his childhood and adolescence. Growing up, Gandhi did poorly in school, was very timid and isolated himself. However, eventually, he became more social. One instance that Gandhi stood out from his classmates was when Gandhi misspelled a word that was part of a spelling activity while the British Education Inspector stopped by his high school.

“Generations to come, it may be”, Einstein once said about Gandhi, “will scarcely believe that such one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon earth.” Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, more commonly known as “Mahatma” (meaning “Great Soul”) was a spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement, who was born on 2 October 1869. He was the pioneer of Satyagraha – resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience, firmly founded upon ahimsa or total nonviolence – which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi is known as the Bapu (Father) and also referred as the father of nation in India.

Mahatma Gandhi is inexplicably one of most esteemed revolutionaries of our time. He was born in India on October 2, 1869 and educated as a lawyer in England. His works took him from England to South Africa and eventually back to India, where Indian Independence became his focus. Ultimately, his lifeworks centered on leadership, freedom and education until his assassination in 1949.

Gandhi was and continues to be a well respected man in the world of non-violent protests and the non violent movement in India. Like Martin Luther king Jr., he faced discrimination in his country but responded only with peaceful protests.

Only few people have left legacies large enough to be known 59 years after their death. A name that is known by almost everyone on Earth, Ghandi. Mohandas Ghandi influenced thousands of Indian Civilians to use Satyagraha, resistance through non-violent civil disobedience. Ghandi put his nation before himself for the goal of home self rule, to win a revolution. A name known by almost everyone on Earth, Ghandi.

The essential of Gandhi is anthology of his life. It is separated into two parts. One as Gandhi the man and the other as the Mahatma meaning Great Soul. I was very much well interested in the readings of The Essential Gandhi. What I was most interested in was that he spoke with so much determination and compassion. His firm belief in nonviolence was presented very strongly. “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent. Gandhi believed strongly in non-violent civil disobedience, so he states that violence provides only temporary relief or satisfaction, but the pain it causes people and societies is much greater. There is so much violence in the world today and some believe you have to fight violence with violence but Gandhi was very successful with his method of not acting upon violence in such of as in a hatred way. He solely helped India become independent with his method of nonviolence. Before I read this story I knew very little details of him, but the main thing that always puzzled me, what gave Gandhi the courage to make such a difference in the world?

Another important political and spiritual leader was Mohandas Ghandi (1896-1948), who was later known as Muhamat, which means good soul. His admirers referred to him by this name for helping India escape from Britain’s tyranny without violence, which proved his moral personality. Britain’s invasion of India started at the end of the 19th century and lasted for a long period of time. By the start of the next century, the Indians nationalism started to grow and they could no longer stand the Britain government’s tyranny. By the 1920s, Ghandi began to take actions against them, which led to repeating times of his imprisonment. His first move was starting the Non-cooperation movement, which involved Indian’s boycott of Britain materials.

Gandhi was a beautiful and brave leader. He inspired so many people to stand up for something they think is wrong. He inspired to use nonviolence to separate India from Great Britain.

Often, when someone thinks of his or her role model they typically think of their mom or dad, but many Indian citizens would think of Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi was the leader of Indian nationalism and is well known as one of the greatest national leaders in the twentieth century .He was strong and determined to give his country the independence they deserved. Also, he was kind of man who would risk anything to give India the freedom they wished for. However, he didn’t host violent protests or encourage angry mobs. Instead, Gandhi helped his country gain their freedom using non-violence. “Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.” (Mohandas Gandhi) Gandhi will continue to be a good role model for all as he was a great leader, an advocate for peace, and a martyr for his country.

Summary of what you found: Gandhi was India’s primary independence leader. He led peaceful demonstrations against the British government. He spent 20 years opposing discriminating legislation against Indians. He became one of the world’s most spiritual and political leader.

Mahatma Gandhi was the primary leader of India’s independence movement and he was the architect of non-violent civil disobedience that influenced the world. Gandhi grew up worshiping the houdini god. He was a shy and unremarkable student. At the age of 18 Gandhi moved to London, England to study law. He returned to India in 1891. Gandhi decided to go to South Africa in 1893. He was quickly appalled by the discrimination and racial segregation. Gandhi was a spiritual leader in protesting. Gandhi would do his protest by doing a fast for 3 or more weeks. I think Madeleine L’engle choose Mahatma Gandhi because he fought for what he believed.

The life of Gandhi can be considered a success for many reasons. The first reason he is considered an accomplished leader is due to the government reforms that he championed. While applying principles of nonviolence, he was influential in shifting the British rule to grant India its independence. Likewise, Gandhi used his influence to calm civil unrest through fasting; additionally, he led nonviolent marches of thousands of Indian citizens. His life echoes the words of Socrates, “a good man is not harmed in life death or death.” Moreover, his influence only grew as he was tormented in life and his spirit continues to illuminate in the souls of million even in his death. He believed God is truth and he lived a simple life of civility and

Aroused by the massacre of Amritsar in 1919, Gandhi devoted his life to gaining India’s independence from Great Britain. As the dominant figure used his persuasive philosophy of non-violent confrontation, he inspired political activists with many persuasions throughout the world (Andrews 23). Not only was Mahatma Gandhi a great peacemaker, but also his work to achieve freedom and equality for all people was greatly acknowledged. Gandhi’s unconventional style of leadership gained him the love of a country and eventually enabled him to lead the independence movement in India.
