The Great Learning is a compilation of Confucian teachings used to address deeply important social behavior. Confucius used question and answer sessions to dispense his ideas to his followers. The Great Learning is an important part of Chinese history. The text, along with several other Confucius texts, has played a large role in Chinese schools of thought, some which are still used today. Parent and child relationships were addressed and children were demanded to serve and respect their parents. Confucius stated that to regulate your government, you must first regulate your family and before you can regulate your family, you must regulate yourself. Self awareness and discipline were crucial to learning and to cultivate your own person to be virtuous, kind, generous and sincere. One of Confucius’ most adamant phrases was concerning reciprocity. “Do not do unto others what you would not have them do to you”, similar to the Golden Rule. Confucius’ teachings couldn’t convince everyone to be virtuous, but they did introduce some basic directions for right and wrong. Legalism, Daoism and Confucianism all were introduced during the sixth century. Confucianism was contrary in particular to Legalism, which believed the state to be all-important and the people were to serve the state. Daoists were focused on finding transcendence and complete union with the Dao and believed in less control in reference to government. Confucianism has been a part of Chinese culture for over a thousand years. Many who have studied Confucianism would say that it is not a religion. It is better described as a philosophy or moral code. The philosophy of Confucianism comes mainly from the speeches and writings of Confucius, a great Chinese thinker and educator. He believed that Humanity, Rite, Neutrality, Virtue, Education, and Cultivation were the basis of human behavior. In addition, Confucius felt that this philosophy was the best way for people to behave and interact with others in society.
For example, the Analects of government, sage, virtue, and manners give a sense of teachings and positive philosophies to follow in order to become a good ruler and obtaining and giving respect. While the Classics and ideals of popper conduct, political peace, moral power, love and ideal humanity help to reinforce the Analects by giving an ideology of a humanism. Secondly, Confucius viewed rules and laws as harmful. He argued that people led by laws and punishments will try to avoid punishment but lose the sense of shame. If they are led by virtue and guided by propriety, they will preserve their sense of shame and become good citizens5. He saw a country as an extended family and a ruler should take care of his citizens like a father would take care of his children. Confucius’s counsel and guidance recorded in The Analects instilled wisdom when they were first recorded and continue to provide a thought provoking analysis of life and the checkpoints that guide it. The Master’s commentary on restraint, diligence, decency, and citizenship are well intended and relevant. Politics and the role of government also come under scrutiny as Confucius offers his insights in bettering the organization of power. His proverb-like admonitions use clear examples of everyday life allowing them to be understood and easily digested. Confucius’s own eagerness and willingness to share goodness he experienced makes it easier to apply and practice in one’s own life.

These were different collections of sayings that Confucius had written to reflect his ideas about different things like politics, family, morality, and many more. Confucius is also the creator of the commonly used “Golden Rule” of “do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.” Through his teachings, books, and his followers, the philosophy of Confucianism was created. When Western people think of Confucianism, they often think of it in a past sense- as something only relevant to ancient China that cannot be applied to modern day society. However, what these people fail to realize is that Confucianism’s roots have been so integrated into China’s society that the values have become a part of every day life. Without having to explicitly state that they are following specifics aspects of Confucianism, most Chinese people submit to them, often times unknowingly.
