Written in 1985, the dystopian, fictional novel; The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood depicts a totalitarian theocracy society set in the United States of America that covers many facets of being a modern woman in this patriarchal world, that range from domestic/dating violence, sexual assault, to less-involved topics. Though the novel was originally published in the year 1985, its’ explicit scenes draw an eerie image of what the future may look for women following the election of President Donald Trump. Altogether a woman’s socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and educational level affect the probability that she will experience any form of violence throughout her lifetime. A controversial topic is that of the continuation of the oppression of women of color. In Canada, “many landlords discriminate against women who are either single mums, social-assistance recipients, or racialized women,” (Khosla). When women of divergent cultural backgrounds seek asylum in a foreign land and are forced into an oppressive continuous cycle they have very chances of ever being able to support themselves and get out of insalubrious situations. The severity of the abuse seems to differ from country to country. “ According to the UN, one in five women worldwide will be raped in her lifetime. UN statistics also show that the incidence of rape is increasing worldwide,” (Gale). This is a horrifying reality for women in this world and it is seemingly not getting better; especially when authority figures are not even being punished for defiling women. For example, during his presidential campaign Donald Trump was accused by a numerous amount of women who stated, “ that he had sexually assaulted or harassed them,” (Gale). Much to the country’s chagrin, “Trump stated that his celebrity status allowed him to get away with actions such as grabbing women by their genitals,” (Gale).
