ABSTRACT
This report is written to explain about acid rain in detail which is one of the hazardous effects of industrialization around the planet. The main causes and their contribution in increasing this curse for flora, fauna and humans. Further, this report describes various factors and it scrutinises the data not only of its adverse effect but also of gases’ amount which consequently make acid rain with water molecules.
At the end, report ends up explaining methods to control this and solutions to recover from effects it poses. However, rain is boon given by mother nature to all living beings but our exploitation of environment for rat race of being powerful and economically strong has changed the water cycles, carbon cycles, ecological balance and so on considerably. Consequently, living in this beautiful inn is getting difficult because of various diseases originating and threatening life of living beings. Therefore, to survive we must find ways to eliminate such disastrous and dangerous phenomenon which are happening because of our activities.

In Chicago, acid rain has been corroding many statues, buildings, and monuments. Acid rain can do more than just burn materials, it can also destroy them. Buildings have been corroding for years on end, which makes them unstable and hazardous. This has become more and more of a problem throughout the years and has not been improving. Acid rain also creates a gypsum coating on materials that is insoluble and remains as a coating on the surface of a material (Allaby, 2003, pgs. 84-95). As a result of acid rain buildings will become uninhabitable and unsafe for people in the buildings and people in the vicinity of the building. When a base is dissolved in water, it lose hydrogen ions to the water, resulting in more hydroxide than hydrogen ions, making an alkaline solution. When an acid is dissolved in water, it receives hydrogen ions from the water, resulting in more hydrogen ions in the acid, making an acidic solution.
Many of the acidic deposits that fall from earth from to the atmosphere can cause the pH of the water to change, making them have a higher acidity than desired. This process was named acid rain from the Scottish chemist, Robert Angus Smith who discovered this in the 19th century (Reed, 2014). Acid rain is commonly known as air pollution today causing many detrimental effects on the environment (Funk & Wagnalls, 2016). Based on the pH of the concentrated rainfall, acid precipitation begins to take place. Acid precipitation begins in the atmosphere since this is where most of the pollutants are being combined to create many of the acids that aid in the acidity of acid rain. Most of the pollutants come from the oxides, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrous oxides (N2O), which later on aid in the acidity of the rain fall (Funk & Wagnalls, 2016). By fully understanding the history and formation of acid rain through inorganic chemistry, scientists can extrapolate the data to help find solutions to decrease the pH concentrations of acid rain.
Current precipitation has high levels of sulfuric and nitric acid. The biggest step we could take towards lowering the rate of acid rain is energy conservation, for instance when you are not using any electrical appliances simply cut it off and conserve energy. Transportation is the next thing we could change to help prevent acid rain since vehicles are also a major contributor to acid rain pollution. You could try and not use cars as much as, instead you could use public transportation, carpool, or even walk it would help reduce our reliance on fossil fuel. Alternative fuels is another way to decrease the amount of acid rain pollution. Using renewable sources of energy such as water, wind, and solar energy instead of using nonrenewable fuels. Using solar powered heating and battery powered cars are others ways that could reduce acid rain
Sulfur Dioxide Pollution in Sullivan County The environmental issue that I have chosen to talk about is sulfur dioxide pollution, specifically in my community and surrounding communities. “The environmental impact of acid rain is that it is a major contributor to acid rain” (Sulfur Dioxide). Acid rain is a problem that has plagued earth for years. It is poisoning our waters, animals, plants, soil, and more. It is a problem that can not be ignored or it might have catastrophic results on our environment. Acid rain is caused by air pollution, which is due to man-made actions.
Acid rain also impacts other natural substances such as the limestone. Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock that reacts easily with acid. (National Geographic, 2006) This is because limestone is mostly composed of mineral calcium carbonate, which is not very soluble. (CaCO3). Because of this, the rock will dissolve but the process will be largely gradual. But with the addition of an acid, hydrogen ions (H+) will be added. This will cause the reaction with the carbonate to form hydrogen carbonate (HCO3- ions) which are very soluble in water, and the limestone will dissolve.
