"Men who are occupied in the restoration of health to other men, by the joint exertion of skill and humanity, are above all the great of the earth. They even partake of divinity, since to preserve and renew is almost as noble as to create”- Voltaire. This quote has served me of great inspiration over the years as my goal and passion is to enter the medical field in order to preserve life and gain nobility as the great Voltaire has so cleverly illustrated. It is with no doubt that The Health Professions Recruitment & Exposure Program (HPREP), if I were to be accepted, would offer me the necessary skills to reach my long term goal. I first realized my passion for health promotion and disease prevention the summer following my first year of college. I had the privilege of attending the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), which introduced me to numerous healthcare professionals. During the program, many of the professionals shared their stories about why they choose the profession, and with each story, I began to reflect deeply on my own background and what drew me to medicine. It was not until an emergency medicine physician spoke about his experiences, that allowed me to fully understand connecting my background to my future. The physician mentioned growing up in D.C., which brought to mind my family in D.C. It had been almost a year since my grandmother
For the longest time, the medical field has grown as a part of me. I have been inspired to become a physician since my dad has been a long time patient of type II diabetes and kidney failure. This affected me because as a little girl, I would watch after his health by monitoring what he eats, giving him his insulin shots, and making sure he stays actively up on his feet. My father was the first to detect my natural interest in medicine and taking care of others, so he always kept me involved. What started off as projects in science fairs, turned into knowledge seeking state-wide competitions. My hobby of taking care of other people became a two hour volunteering shift at my high school nurses office. I started attending summer camps that were competitive to get into, and now my major in college is what I will use to get me where I need to be. Although I want to be an Emergency Room Physician, the general ‘doctor guideline’ includes but isn’t limited to common courses in the Bachelor of Sciences (i.e; Chemistry, Biological sciences, Physics, Human genetics). 4-year undergraduate degree program, an addition four years in medical school and a variation of 2-7 years in residency and fellowship (usually split 4:3 years or less)— this varies depending on specialization. Before the admissions of medical school, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) must be taken and a high score must be achieved.
The Health Careers Academy provides students the opportunity to experience and interact with professionals in a medical field. So far, I have volunteered many hours at four departments associated with the academy. The department of pharmacy taught me many things. I learned that there are different colored baskets and labels used to distinguish the medication.

When I was stationed with the Marine Expeditionary Unit in Japan we had a mission in which we needed to be rapidly deployable within 24 hours. Do to the expedited nature in which we needed to be deployed we spent many days and weeks rehearsing rapid response. We additionally conducted several real world deployments that were conducted successfully due to our drills in rapid response. Within this unit I can attribute our success to the Executive Officer within the organization that was a Lean Six Sigma expert. He used to have the company lay out the individual data as to how fast we moved to deployment ready. At first, it appeared to the casual observer that the slowest unit needed the most help. However, as I now understand due to statistic class, that was not always the case. This is where statistical process control (SPC) has helped me greater understand what he was accomplishing. SPC is the process used to “improve the quality of a process” (text 251). A unit that would appear to be slow, as

The term global health encompasses a range of issues related to health and well being of the people who may be either directly or indirectly affected transcending national boundaries and essentially focuses on improvising and implementing suitable strategies to mitigate and prevent the problems in healthcare at population levels following a multidisciplinary approach fostering health equity among all the nations. The principal aim of my career has always been to serve the society and my inclination towards public health stems from the very same desire. I grew up in India which has a lot of socio-economic deficits affecting health of our population. My family has always focused on prioritizing education and instilled the sense of responsibility to give back to the society we live in. Studying Physiotherapy in the early years of my career helped me pursue the dream to be able to serve people. I went to Institute of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in India for my graduation followed by eight months of internship in Army Hospital, India. This had given me the foundation of principles of therapeutic assessment and intervention. As I practiced further, I realized that a gap existed between the practice in my country and the ones with better developed healthcare systems and this motivated me to pursue MSc Physiotherapy in UK and gain some clinical experience.
