From the 1960s to the 1970s, the Hippie Movement was apart of the counterculture era. This was an age of renewal and change amongst society. People known as Hippies focused on pursuing a life different from the one proposed by mainstream culture. Hippies followed transcendentalism, which influenced their idealism of their understanding of nature and society. They often used drugs such as psychedelics, amphetamines, methamphetamine, and marijuana to experience spiritual and artistic awareness as well as self-fulfillment. They created a new culture of teenagers and young adults who dressed and acted differently from those before them. Hippies focused on experimentation and redefining themselves. Hippies helped influenced music, television, film, literature, and the arts and changed the societal norms.

The hippie counter- culture brought with it many new things in large. It brought a new style of music, new opinions about equality, and many new experiences. However, most of these experiences stemmed from something else popular in the 1960s: drugs.

That does not include over-the-counter drugs like Tylenol and Claritin which are used to help with sickness. Taking illegal drugs will harm you and possibly others around you. Whether or not a drug is legal or illegal, people will still find a way to do it. People want what they can’t have. Think, if coffee was illegal, would more people want it? (I do not know the answer to this). However, that does not mean that we should just give in and start making drugs legal, because that is us practically putting drugs into people's’ hands. Drug addicts can end up on Welfare and find themselves troubled to find a job. Drugs cause people to make bad decisions and can get people killed. Pregnant women taking drugs could cause their baby to have birth defects. They can damage your brain, heart, and other important organs. People who support legalizing drugs state that the government should be more focused on other crimes such as robbery, murder and rape. These offenses are closely tied to the drug market, so if we could get rid of these unnecessary drugs, we could decrease crime rates. There are better, safer alternatives to using drugs. Some may argue that people should be able to put whatever they please into their bodies, but putting drugs into your body will ruin yours and potentially others around you’s life. Hippie drug use was more than just use, it was the practice of psychedelic drugs, in order to spread love and happiness. Some of the many drugs hippies used were LSD (acid), mushrooms, DMT, marijuana, amphetamines, and narcotics. Hippies most often used the drugs and others that fall into the psychedelic hallucinogenic category. Hippies were referred to as “drug using counterculture shared belief in better living through chemistry” (Wesson). The hallucinogen drugs were for mind-expansion, seeing the world through colors. All in order to get crazy high to spread love, peace, and happiness. This was more of a spiritual practice for hippies. The easiest and most common way for them to use these drugs was by rolling them in paper and smoking them. As one can see, the drug use in the hippie culture was a very important toll for the peace, love, and happiness aspect of the culture.

In today 's world, hippies are known because of the distinct way in which they behave, dress and their overall lifestyles. There are also some who have come to believe that hippies are synonymous with drugs or that they have radical political views on environmentalism, capitalism, religion e.t.c. The dictionary defines a hippie as "one who doesn’t conform to society’s standards and advocates a liberal attitude and lifestyle". What I am interested in is whether this definition is true.      Do people ever think about the consequences about drug abuse? Not many of us do but we all know what it does to us.
