The Hobbit movie is more effective and more expressive than the novel. The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien and movie director Peter Jackson, is mainly about a man who normally stays inside his home and does not explore in the outside world. He does not face many difficult obstacles in life and does not have much courage. One day, Bilbo Baggins gets a message saying that he must go on a journey and go through distractions that he has never experienced throughout his life. His goal is to get through the journey alive and make sure that it is completed. Two major differences that Peter Jackson changed in the movie that are not the same in the book are when the dwarves try and save Bilbo from the trolls and when Gandalf comes and shows the sunlight to …show more content…
For example, “The dwarves had heard noises from a distance, and after waiting for some time for Bilbo to come back, or to hoot like an owl, they started off one by one to creep towards the light as quietly as they could” (Tolkien 38). The dwarves told Bilbo to hoot if he had trouble with whatever the light was and he didn’t make any noise so they sent the dwarves one by one to find Bilbo. The movie scene is more effective because in the film, they have a plan to go all at once and to fight the trolls to rescue Bilbo. In the novel, the dwarves do not have a plan and they just send one dwarf at a time to see what the light is and to see if they can find Bilbo. In the film, the dwarves all charge at once, attacking the trolls, but are beaten. But, Bilbo hear the trolls say that they cannot be seen by the sunlight or else they would turn into stone. So, Bilbo gets an idea of lying to the trolls, so they wouldn't eat the dwarves. This is the first sign of Bilbo’s character changing and becoming more courageous. Bilbo shows much courage in this scene and many people cannot express that and feel how much Bilbo is changing in the book. Bilbo faces the trolls by himself for a little while but he knew how to handle them in the …show more content…
“Don’t start the whole argument all over again… or it will take all night” (Tolkien 40). The trolls did not want to cook the dwarves all night because if the sunlight sees them, the trolls will be turn into stone and will die. This is also more effective because in the book, the author just has Gandalf mimic the voices of the trolls for them to continue to keep arguing until the sun rises. This is not very fascinating for the viewers of the movie. So, Jackson decided to spice things up a bit and make this part of the film more interesting and more effective throughout the movie. In the film, Gandalf uses his magical staff to show the light to the trolls while Bilbo distracts the trolls. In the novel, Gandalf is the main hero but in the film, Bilbo is the main hero. This part of the film shows where Bilbo is a big part of being the hero who saves the day. In the novel, everybody thanks Gandalf for saving them once again, but the dwarves should be thanking Bilbo because in the movie, Bilbo does pretty much all of the work for the trolls not to eat them. Bilbo distracts the trolls by telling them how to “properly” cook dwarf and saying that the dwarves are all infested with rodents and are sick. The movie is more effective and more expressive than the
Bilbo meets various races along his journey to the Lonely Mountains. When the dwarves sent Bilbo up to explore the light in the forest Bilbo already wants to prove that he is a value to the group and tried to impress them. Going toward the light in the forest, he sees that there are three trolls. In an attempt to impress he tries to steal a wallet from one of the trolls, Bilbo is showing a very highly admired virtue and that is courage. “Then Bilbo plucked
In my opinion the battle of the five armies was the worst of the three movies. I felt the plotline in this movie was not as good as the others. But there were not as many differences in between the film and the movie. In the film there were no talking birds, which I wanted to see. In the movie, Thorin shoots an arrow at the feet of Thranduil’s horse. Bilbo does not meet either Gandalf or Bard at the fire but rather walks right up to them. Also in the movie, Bilbo is struck on the head and survives without any injury. In the movie Thorin kills Bolg. Legolas appears in the movie but he does not appear in the book. When Bilbo is saying goodbye to Gandalf he is shown carrying a chest. It is not shown that they split the treasures like it says in
“The Hobbit” is a piece of prose written by J.R.R. Tolkien. “The Hobbit” is about a hobbit, Bilbo, that gets picked as a burglar by a wizard, Gandlaf, to go on an adventure. His other members that are going on the journey are the dwarves that are trying to get their mountain back, which is named the Lonely Mountain. Firstly, Bilbo has changed as a character in chapters two and four of “The Hobbit”.
“The Hobbit” is a piece of prose, written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Bilbo has changed the story by having skills like being brave and smart. He also developed a good attitude and a good personality. When the dwarves were telling Bilbo about the dragon he fainted in chapter 1, but in chapter 8, he feels confident in himself. Also, he takes risks when trying to save the dwarves and trying to be a burglar.
The Hobbit written by JRR Tolkien is a fantasy novel that follows the quest of sensible hobbit Bilbo Baggins and the thirteen dwarves to win a share of the treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug. Bilbo's journey takes him from isolated surroundings into more threatening territory. Throughout the novel Bilbo changes dramatically, he develops a greater understanding of the world around him, he gains a sense of adventure and he also develops a desire to live a comfortable life without the thought of others. Throughout the novel Bilbo changes remarkably, one of the most remarkable changes he makes was his greater understanding of the world around him.
At this time, Thorin and the other dwarves gain more respect for the hobbit, who was once doubted and looked down upon. Bilbo’s intelligence and resourcefulness seems much more remarkable than Thorin’s integrity; since Thorin was considering on telling the elves about their journey. In this chapter, Bilbo has become responsible for the dwarves; as he uses his advantageous skills to steal food for them. The quote, “When he heard Bilbo’s voice through the keyhole, he could hardly believe his ears.” This indicated that Thorin was so relieved and reassured when Bilbo discovered him, because he knew he could rely on Bilbo to help him and the other dwarves escape. This chapter demonstrates how Bilbo, rather small; but he is a bright ray of hope for the dwarves when they are in
The next part of Bilbo’s development into a hero appears as seemingly endless obstacles and trials. This part is perhaps most important for Bilbo’s progression, as it is here where he develops his heroic characteristics and taps into his inner reserves of strength. The first major trial Bilbo’s group encounters is a group of trolls in their path. Bilbo, having the wise notion, that as his ‘official’ job position of the group is burglar, decides to pickpocket the trolls. A fight ensues, in which the reader is aware of Bilbo’s ineffectiveness. Inevitably, it turns into a disaster, ending up with all of the party captured by the trolls. Luckily, the group is saved by Gandalf. After the encounter with the trolls, the group searches for the troll’s stash only to find it locked. After much time fussing over how to open

Although the movies are a beautiful remake of the original book, there a quite a few distinct differences between the two. These differences can be very simple: like the fact that Gollum only has six teeth in the book and nine in the movie, or very complex: like the fact that whole new characters were added to the movie that were not originally in the book. The elves Legolas, Tauriel, and Galadriel played very prominent roles in the book in helping the dwarves and hobbit on their journey, yet they ceased to exist in the original text. Another substantial difference between the book and movies is that in the book, the dwarves and hobbit weren’t aware of Smaug leaving (or being killed for that matter) until they were alerted of this news by the crows. However, in the movie, a pretty large battle took place between the dwarves and Smaug. As far as smaller differences go, in the book the keyhole to get into Smaug’s chamber was lit by the sunset, whereas in the movie the keyhole was lit by the light of the moon; the movie showed Bard’s children and the book didn’t; and in the book it talks of Gandalf throwing pinecones lit with fires of many color, but in the book they were all one color; and the movie featured an attack
Him being at his home being comfortable and sitting outside and smoking his pipe at the beginning of the story. The here comes Gandalf with his long staff, and Bilbo greets him and say good morning to him. Gandalf says “What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?” Bilbo says all of them and invites Gandalf to sit down with him. Gandalf says that he does not have time to sit he is looking for someone to go on an adventure. Bilbo tells him he won’t find anyone around these parts. People who live in the Hill are quiet folks they aren’t into adventures. The rising action of the Hobbit is when Gandalf appears and asks Bilbo if he would like to go on an adventure. Bilbo of course at first says no and that hobbit’s do not go on adventures. Bilbo invites Gandalf tea and Gandalf accepts and before he leaves he leaves a sign on Bilbo’s front door. The next day Bilbo up and doing the things he would normally do when he hears a knock at his door. He thought it was Gandalf but it was Dwalin. Then two more dwarves Kili and Fili. Five more dwarves show up Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, and Gloin. Then Gandalf arrives with four more dwarves Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and Thorin. They all start discussing the adventure, the map, and who was going to do what. Bilbo is excited about the adventure but
The Hobbit, written by John R. R. Tolkien, is a fantasy novel published on September 21, 1937. It was written as a prelude to the famous series, The Lord of the Rings, written seventeen years later. The Hobbit introduces the reader to an incredibly immersive fantasy world, that enriches the reader into its epic storyline. The story takes place in a land called Middle-earth, a land filled with enchanting surprises and magical wonders. It was the perfect playground for Tolkien to develop his main character Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo Baggins was a small hobbit, who unaware in the beginning would become a large role in the plot. It is through this character that Tolkien implemented the theme of heroism into the story. Bilbo’s
Throughout the book there are many important details, such as important symbols, one of them being Sting the sword Bilbo named after he killed the giant spider. To add on, another important detail is the conflicts that Bilbo went through, and how the dwarves never listened to Gandalf which always became a serious problem. In addition, there are many motifs, one of those are how Bilbo always drifts away into thinking about his lovely hobbit hole. Most importantly is the characters that are represented throughout the novel, one of them is how Gandalf is a clear representation of God and how he brings Bilbo on a journey to fulfill his destiny. In addition, there is a major theme set in The Hobbit and that theme would be Bilbo becoming a hero.
The story starts from the side of Mr. Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo starts as a nervous & annoyed host. He is hobbit, & his folk are reserved, but kind & carefree. Hobbits love to accommodate company when the time arrives, but this night Bilbo was in a ruck. Spontaneously, 13 dwarves & Gandalf tediously trickled through the door in groups & demanded dinner. Bilbo was not expecting these unknown & unplanned visitors, especially the grand total of 14! They ate & sang all night, while little time was devoted to business, which was planned that night. Bilbo was exhausted, unpleased, & unaffiliated with the pressing event they gathered to discuss. He was only aware that Gandalf selected him to be the Burglar of the party, which just so happened to be a vast journey across Middle-Earth. Unbeknownst to anyone, this was the start of a haunting tale, which Bilbo would never overlook. The first prominent issue Bilbo had to resolve the trolls. The group utilized this to test Bilbo’s strength, courage, brains, & stealth. Throughout the story, Bilbo continues to earn his spot among the dwarves, while the party is continually slammed with additional problems, however, everyday & every challenge reveals more of the nature of the dwarves & of Bilbo. With his role concluded & the Battle of Five Armies won, the yearning for home was too much to bear. Bilbo decided to travel home & achieve his part in the adventure of a lifetime. Each dwarf had grown quite fond of Bilbo, for the journey wouldn’t have been a success without their Burglar. The travel home was bittersweet & was a wonderful memoir of his quest. Gandalf accompanied him all the way to his Hobbit Hole on the Hill in Bag-End. Can we label Bilbo a hero? If so, what kind of hero is he? Is he a hero in history or in the eyes of the dwarves? Was Bilbo a savior for the descendants to come or the
The Hobbit directed by Peter Jackson is a movie that lets you see how the underdog goes from being small and not noticed to becoming the hero that will bring back hope and save the day. Everyone likes a good underdog story and I for one think that The Hobbit is a perfect example of it. Throughout this movie, it slowly makes the main character Bilbo Baggins more of the light in dark and makes him become more hero like with each passing event. Throughout this movie, the tone helps to bring out the inner heroism and light in Bilbo. In the start of the movie, Bilbo gets 13 uninvited guests that show up and ask him to join them on their mission to take back their home, the Lonely Mountain. This is a very powerful scene with a very serious underlying tone to it. The scene starts off with playful banter and fun throughout the 12 dwarfs but when Thorin Oakenshield arrives the mood gets very serious by how the music changes and the interaction between characters. The music was a big hint in the serious tone since it went from more upbeat and energetic to a softer volume and slowed down a bit. The characters interactions are still friendly with each other but when confronting Bilbo they get more focused. The body language is also stiffer and less carefree when the call for help is talked about. Another scene is where Bilbo's ability to bring out some hope is when the Company has to get back there ponies from 3 mountain trolls. During this scene Bilbo has to bite back is fear of the
The thought that is running through all our heads when we are in English class is, can 't we just watch the movie? The answer is no, we can 't just watch the movie because the book has many major details that the movie does not include. For our age, reading the book will have a major impact on our life ahead, how we look at the world, and how we look at others. Some of us may be unhappy that we are reading the book and not just watching the movie, but we need to realize, that not only with The Hobbit but with all movies, they are vastly different from the books.
