Innovation is a combination of behaviors and skill sets that contribute to the development of a new product or service that is cutting edge, creates value, is a breakthrough process or brings financial success. Some people may think that innovation is something that only comes natural, a born skill or talent. But according to Dyer, Gregersen, and Christensen (2011), anyone can become more innovative through the mastering of the five discovery skills (associating, questioning, observing, experimenting and networking). These five skills were identified through a study on the behaviors that top innovators engage in. In this analysis, an in-depth review of an article by Vineet Nayar, the former CEO and vice chairman of HCLT will help to identify how discovery skills, were used to create an innovative organization. As a newly appointed president of the Delhi-based IT services provider HCL Technologies (HCLT), Vineet Nayar found himself in a difficult position to either stick with the current norms of his organization or take a leap towards greater possibilities. Despite the continued growth of the company’s revenues each year, it was still losing market shares and mindshare. The industry was rapidly changing; its competitors were increasing in growth more rapidly each year and the loss of the customer’s interest in their services (Nayar, 2010). He knew that something would have to change in order for the company to survive and thrive in a rapidly changing industry.

Innovation is a word that draws attention, elicits excitement, and makes a company stand out. Innovation architecture can be described in the same manner, but it applies to ideas and products that already exist. Whenever a product is formulated or redesigned innovation is an important aspect. My interview took place with an employee of Wework, which is a company that has changed the atmosphere of how entrepreneurs meet and interact. My reflection will provide an overview of the company, what challenges I face with my current employer, and how I can foster an innovative culture within my own organization.
Alongside the entrepreneur spirit, Innovation is the process of taking new ideas and implementing them into the market. Key word being “new”, an innovation can be sometimes viewed as the application to better solutions that meet new demand-requirements, inarticulated needs or existing market needs. Innovative ideas range from: goods, services, products, processes, services, technologies or ideas that create value for which customers will pay for. For an idea to be an innovation, it must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. This means is that one must be ready and willing put their new idea to the test. On the other hand, there is recognition that “innovation is also critical to cultural, environmental, social, and artistic progress as well” (Bullinger, 2006). With this stated, high-tech innovation is ultimately the reason why we can be thankful for the many new conveniences of the 21st century. Although we might see the forefront of innovation being very prominent in today’s world, innovation is truly nothing new. From the start of modern man times, innovative ideas have paved the way for civilization to advance and develop into what we are today and at the same time, we have barely begin to chip away at the tip of the iceberg of our true human potential. In this process, this study accentuates human factors representing different personal constructs associated with the innovation process. Innovation is the process by which organizations use their resources and competencies to develop new or improved goods and services or to develop new production and operating systems so that they can better respond to the needs of their customers. Innovation can result in brilliant success for an organization. Apple’s ipod has changed not only the music listening industry but also music purchasing and now they are moving into the mobile phone industry.
As I mentioned in Unit 2, I have always leaned more towards the delivery skills as opposed to the discovery skills. I attribute this to the structured environment of the military. Junior ranks in the military are not encouraged to be innovative, they are rewarded for their ability to delivery which results in promotion. However, as individuals gain rank, innovation begins to play a role in continued progression. In my current rank as a Chief Warrant Officer and working as a Cyber Operations Technician I have learned to apply the discovery skills mentioned in the The Innovator’s DNA, specifically networking, observation and experimenting.
My personal philosophy of innovation encompasses many ideas. It is not only thinking outside of the box, but questioning why the box is even necessary. It is about creating opportunity out of disappointment, being open to different, and unafraid of being vulnerable. It is about breathing, living, and embodying the change that you want to see in the world and exploring new paths in achieving that change. Innovation is being courageously defiant in the face of the universe shouting “You can’t” and replying with a resounding “Watch me”.
Creativity and innovation are necessary in life, whether it is for evolving and adapting to new surroundings or for pulling a company out of a financial crisis, we use our creative abilities and innovate every day. In order to develop and grow the ability to think creatively, one must first understand where these ideas come from and in what environment innovation flourishes. Steven Johnson, Edward Burger, and Michael Starbird suggest change comes from productive thinking and working collaboratively in a group. Effective thinking can be broken down into five essential elements, while working collaboratively in a group setting allows for different views on the topic at hand creating a stronger more defined product or process.
The aim of the report is to discuss the development of a service innovation in a hospital care setting. Therefore the innovation being introduced in the report will focus on the pain management tool for assessing chronic conditions in service users with dementia in hospital settings. As pain is a very subjective experience it is important that the tool is specifically based on the individual’s own way of expressing and communicating their pain in relation to their chronic conditions.

When operating in an ever-changing world, a company must flow and learn to benefit from the external and internal forces. The modern business environment is unpredictable and usually corporations cannot fully forecast the demand and the outcome of various products or services (Geer-Frazier, 2014).
