The Negative Impact of Social Media on Society Marylin Vos Savant once said, “Email, instant messaging, and cell phones give us fabulous ability, but because we live and work in our own little worlds, that communication is totally disorganized”. The society we live in today requires modern technology. Texting, tweeting, and other forms of abbreviated communications are now changing how we speak. Of course technology and social media to be precise, is not necessarily evil; they have boosted the world’s economy by creating employment opportunities, increased the standard of living whereby individuals’ needs are met with greater ease, and the world’s connectivity has never been better. Although social media has benefited society in one way or another, it presents more serious consequences, including the way we speak and communicate with each other inhabiting face to face interactions, health associated problems especially among the youth, and poor performances at jobs and schools resulting from abbreviated words. First and foremost, texting and tweeting has limited the essential social connections between families and friends. Today, most individuals prefer texting to talking because it is more convenient and saves time. Individuals rarely visit their families and if they do, their cell phones are always right in their faces texting or watching a video during this family gathering. This has set us up for isolation. Individuals might think they’re with their families and are
“Texting is a brilliant way to miscommunicate how you feel and misinterpret what other people mean” (Stanley Behrman). Sometimes texting, tweeting, and so on can have different meaning and can hurt the feeling of loved ones. Everyone on social media communicates using the short and abbreviated phrase. Mostly the youth has been affected by this virtual world of tweeting, texting, and so on. In the article, “The Flight from Conversation”, by Sherry Turkle is about that human are living on social media. Conversation online allows us to connect with friends and family that in another part of the word. In 2008 Joel Garreau conducted interviews and wrote a piece titled "Friends Indeed" for the Washington Post. Garreau brings up possible dangers, minor inconveniences, and what truly defines a friend in the new media world we live in. I felt Garreau came across as jaded by most of the interviews he conducted. He did not seem to speak with a wide array of people that gave positive impacts social media can have, but rather focused on the negatives of the subject. Garreau did bring up valid points, however, from personal safety to the aspect of different people in your life seeing your different personalities. For instance your Grandma that you go to church with on Sunday 's is now seeing the pictures of you partying with your friends on Saturday night.
In today's world, there are many ways a person can communicate. People no longer have to have direct face to face contact for social interaction. Cell phones are a primary form of communication for many teens and adults. Since 2005, cellphone usage among children has grown by 68% (Miller, 2017). A vast majority of people prefer text messaging over an actual conversation. Social media is now a platform for almost everyone to discuss their day to day lives. Communication today consist mostly through electronic devices whether it be text, messaging or through social media. This form of communication can make conversations less personal.
Whether you are a child fresh out of the womb or a grandparent in the final stages of life, there is something for everyone in social media. It is convenient and allows us to easily keep in contact with our family and friends. As its use has increased, however, so has its power to mould our minds and damage our beings. We trust and rely so heavily on social media that we become oblivious as to how it might be affecting us. The dangers of social media have never been more apparent, so why do we continue to thrive on it?
It is a fact that social media has existed for several decades. However, as technologies keep advancing, the usages of social media have gained attention because of the issues they may cause. On one hand, social media is fundamentally used to interact among users via the Internet; consequently, they may share and exchange pieces of information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. In summary, social media is basically used to connect people. On the other hand, recent studies have found that rather than making the users feel connected, they can promote loneliness and less social interaction, which may lead to isolation. The scope of this analysis is limited to five sources with the following four themes: loneliness, face-to-face communication, textual technological communication values, and negative emotions.
One of the most prominent areas of information technology present in today’s society is that of social media. Facebook users make up 62% of the entire adult population and Twitter users compose 20% of the population (Mobile Messaging and Social Media, 2015). Sites like these allow users to transfer information, in the form of social content, to the Internet community with no limitations. These sites also ease communication across great distances, allowing for a diverse audience for any information posted on such a site. Such a tool for information transfer is incredibly powerful in the hands of those who know how to use it.
In a few years our generation will be looking back on our youth saying “Social media is one of the biggest leaps made in our culture”. Social media has advanced the way communication is achieved through the way society shares knowledge. We are able to talk to anyone anytime just through a simple text or a Facebook message. We are able to communicate through technology in fast, simple ways knowing what everyone is up too through their never-ending tweets and posts. Though all the things may be true there is a bigger issue at hand, and this is causing great travesty. Social media is destroying communication and intamicy on a face-to-face level.
In today’s society not all people welcome social media into their lives and thus restrict their access and or involvement when it comes to the abundances of social media outlets. However, social media has indeed taken the lives of our children, adolescents, and families by the collar. Social media plays a pivotal part affecting everyday life as we know it today. Despite these claims, the advancements in technology have evolved, thus creating a society that thrives on the dependency of social media outlets. This addiction is the craving of being instantly connected to everything and everyone. Being connected and having instant access to this so called “Information Highway,” surely allows for convenience and simplicity, but this also
What kind of world could possibly exist without some form of a Facebook, a Twitter, or an Instagram? Perhaps, it would be a world so unjust; people would actually have to call all of their five hundred and twenty-nine best friends by phone. So that they may share with them, the stale bread with one slice of turkey meat sandwich, they bought during lunch! Social media websites like, Facebook or Twitter are portals to information and communication. It has provided new and exciting opportunities for people all around the world to be able to connect with each other more easily than ever before. It has also helped businesses to flourish, and provides just about every answer to a sought out question. The internet superhighway so to speak, has created an excessive need. And as a result, it has become such a craze, that the sophisticated computers used to access the internet, now play a major role in everyone’s life; including children. Many gaming systems, cellular phones, and other electronics readily made available to children all have the potential to easily access the internet. Ever thought about what effects might such a craze have on children? For instance, could the excess of internet use with social media in particular, pose any implications onto children? The excessive partaking in social media amongst children- inhibits their productivity, interferes with the development of their social skills, and desensitizes their outlooks.
Social media is a growing aspect and trend of the current generation. Currently there are 1.73 billion users over the world. As social media users ourselves, we are well aware of the many great aspects of social media, but also know there are some negative outcomes. This then led to the exploration of how social media effects society through studying texts. In each scenario the characters were affected in different ways, as well as the people around them. The texts studied are Ender’s Game, The Social Network, Cyberbully and Trust. In some of the texts positive aspects have arisen from the result of social media whereas in other extreme cases the result of social media has been extremely harmful. Wikipedia.com defines social media as ‘computer-mediated tools which allow people to create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks’.
Often there are inventions that change society. They become part of our everyday life. Social media is an invention that has changed the foundation of the way we communicate and in all probability, it will be around for the remainder of the homo sapiens lifespan. With life-changing inventions like social media, debates spark whether it is a good thing for our society or not. Dave Eggers “The Circle” shows the way social media can be a positive change for society with the Circle’s countless inventions that integrate social media. “SeeChange” is one of the inventions from the Circle that allows people to see HD quality live streams from a small device anywhere. Their claim is that with such devices we can make criminals and tyrants
The role of the sociologist is to research the way society is organized around power structures, groups and individuals (Human Services Guide.1). A power structure captures the way authority is distributed between a multitude of businesses (Wikipedia.2). Due to the distribution in which power is arranged, the privacy of those who are involved with the businesses can be affected. Social media has perpetuated an image of publicity by “Giving everyone the power to create, share ideas and information instantly, without barriers” (Twitter.3). Slogans such as “What’s on your mind” and “It’s what’s happening”, have exposed our societies behind the scenes personality, thoughts and images. This platform was created by those who are associated with power structures. They understood the impact internet had on the life of an everyday person and the ability to access it within seconds. As social media progressed, the privacy of everyday became more revealing. The single biggest change that will happen to American society in the next fifty years is an increase of exposure of privacy in social media.
The rapid growth and innovation of technology has had a lasting effect on the people of this generation. Tasks are done faster; life is more efficient. But the same efficiency that has made our quality of life better, has a hand in decreasing the quality of relationships around us. Sherry Turkle and Zeynep Tufekci both believe social media has done well to our society, but disagree on whether or not it is making human relationships grow apart. Social media is a double-edged sword; it brings people together that are physically apart by five hours, or even 30 minutes, but it also has negative effects on the quality of the relationships we have with these people.
Just imagine how the world would be if each individual did not have the ability to communicate with anyone. Everyone continues to live their life, but without communication. Interactions would be hindered and information planning would come to a halt. Communication is essential to everyday living. This is how interactions happen. Without interaction, what benefits are there? Businesses and organizations need it to better their prestige. Most importantly governments need to communication skills the most. If governments cannot communicate well with their citizens, a mutual trust is not built. Communication occurs in an abundance of forms.
