People who use social media don 't think about how it can beneficial or not. how about this if you asked your self what would it be like to not have social media. would you benefit from it or would you need it. Often times societal norms create a strong scrutiny of individuals, which in turn can create poor body image, body dissatisfaction, and more. Poor body image and body dissatisfaction can be the basis for development of an eating disorder. “ The best known contributor to both clinical eating disorders and sub clinical cases of disordered eating is negative body image and high body dissatisfaction,”(NEDA). Social media sites are very popular throughout the United States. As technology advances, more social media sites advance for those who own a form of electronic device. Social media is a relationship that exists between the individual and the whole wide world. In today’s society, anything someone desires to know can be found on social media. We have several different forms of social media websites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and several more. Since social media was invented young men and women use it to share photos, announce an engagement, birth of a child and high point moments taking place in their lives. For example, at Southern University, we share a lot of events that are taking place around the university on Instagram.

The way to express these different features is functional through big name sites such as, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. It is believed that nearly 2.5 billion people in the world will be using some form of social media in the year 2018, and 78% of the United States population has a social networking profile (Statistics and facts about Social Media, 2016). It is very apparent that a large number of people are using their personal accounts on their spare time, however, it does not only occur on their spare time. The only time social media can’t be accessed is when WIFI is unavailable, this meaning at a workplace, social media is very accessible. With the large amount of social media use, human resource managers must be aware of all the situations that could occur within their workplace. It is also important for HRM to understand the benefits and negatives of social media use.

Is social media friend or foe to our growing complex society? Is it simply an added method of useful and useless communication? No matter which way online media is viewed it's here to stay. But does it define us, or limit our social etiquette and daily mannerisms? This growth is incredibly useful when it comes to sharing important information as well as comical anecdotes. Nonetheless, the question still remains, does social media impact society?

Many people believe that the increasing amount of people on social media is due to the affordability of computers and cellular phone devices; therefore, people have the necessary tools to create online accounts on social media websites.

Social media provides an outlet that reflects our lives online. It is changing the way we relate to others and how we think about ourselves. Users of social media have created for themselves a social footprint. This footprint marks where they are and where they have been online. Their lifestream is now recorded in the timeline of their social networks. Participants in social media now have a digital identity, which shows their activity with a time and date stamp in reverse chronological order. The users social brand is created by any online interactions that have been created by leaving information (Solomon, 2015).

In just a few short years, social media have become the centerpiece at the table of intercollegiate athletic (Elfman, 2013). Social media is being used for several components such as recruiting; fans engagement, and fundraising, Twitter, and YouTube are increasing the bonding process to the virtual realm in most athletic department. Causing most athletic departments and the sporting industry to hire folks just for promoting their brand through social media. Social media has become a game-changer across the board for the sporting industry. Using social media and the numerous platforms forms several fans as well as followers. For example, the NBA was the first major league that used Facebook and Twitter. And now they have over 27.5 million fans and followers (Facebook.com, 2013). Therefore, if social media has an impact on gathering millions of followers can it generate revenue?

Jean Kilbourne states in her writing that advertisements can tell someone how to view themselves or have an influence on the way they act. Bell Hooks explains how television can affect how someone views their economic status and how their economic status can make them feel about themselves. Social Media is meant for people to connect and socialize with each other, it is not meant to cause stress or pressure on someone for small reasons. Advertisements are meant for stores to promote their business and increase sales, but can sometimes be misinterpreted by people. Television is meant for leisure and entertainment, not meant to be taken serious and make someone feel bad about themselves. Males and females need to consider how social media, advertisements, television, and society can affect the way they see oneself.

As social media users ourselves, we are well aware of the many great aspects of social media, but also know there are some negative outcomes. This then led to the exploration of how social media effects society through studying texts. In each scenario the characters were affected in different ways, as well as the people around them. The texts studied are Ender’s Game, The Social Network, Cyberbully and Trust. In some of the texts positive aspects have arisen from the result of social media whereas in other extreme cases the result of social media has been extremely harmful.
