Several reasons accounted for the situation viz;
a. The large concentration of the populace in the rural areas,
b. Many years of neglect of the rural areas in terms of infrastructural development and lack of information on the way government is being run.
The CBN/World Bank study on poverty Assessment and Alleviation in Nigeria (1999) attested to the fact that the living and environmental conditions of those living in the rural areas have worsened. Urban poverty is also on the increase in the country. This has been attributed to the under provision of facilities and amenities which are already inadequate to match the growing demand of the urban populace as well as the rural-urban movement which has caused serious pressure on the existing infrastructural facilities.
Concern about this problems as well as efforts made to eradicate or at least reduce it cannot be said to be new. While major reductions in poverty level have been made in developed countries, developing countries, Nigeria inclusive, have been battling with poverty, from one poverty alleviation programme to another eradication programme, but all to no avail.
The concern over increasing poverty levels in Nigeria and the need for its eradication as a means of improving the standard of living of the people has led to the conceptualization and implementation of various targeted or non-targeted poverty eradication and alleviation-programmes. Both the Nigerian government and donor agencies have been
Many individuals all over the world are affected by poverty. In order to completely understand the cause, the effect, and the solution to ending poverty, we must first understand the meaning of poverty. Poverty is the condition where an individual’s basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter are not being met (business dictionary). According to the World Bank Organization, poverty is also the lack of healthcare, education, information, and jobs. There are two general types of poverty: Absolute and Relative. Absolute poverty occurs when individuals cannot obtain adequate resources to support a minimum level of physical health. Relative poverty occurs when individuals do not
Poverty is a major global issue in today’s society. It also has a broad definition as it is very complex and cannot be specifically defined. Poverty is circumstance-dependent. According to Sharif Mohammed, author of Poverty Reduction - An Effective Means of Population Control, “Poverty is a multidimensional condition of human survival, not just a measure of deficiency in income. It is generally defined in relation to a minimum standard of decent living. The levels of living below this are referred to as survival standards. Failure to attain and enjoy the standard is called absolute poverty.” Millions around the world are affected by poverty and it’s an issue that has plagued the globe for centuries. Different
Poverty has increased tremendously over the last decade in many countries, developed or less developed. Poverty can be caused by many different factors,
Poverty is a pervasive problem throughout the world. Many people must live in harrowing and undignified conditions because they simply lack the resources to have a better life. If people worldwide can become more informed about poverty and its consequences, there is a chance its impact can be diminished and the wellbeing of those living in poverty can be improved
There have many attempts to solve the problem of world poverty in recent years. Average people have begun to care and are willing to help with the age old problem. However, the world is making little progress toward the eradication of poverty. Many of the things we are doing, out of the goodness of our hearts, just aren't helping. For various reasons, the typical response to poverty of donating vast sums of money to hurting countries doesn't help the poor near as much as other solutions and sometimes may even make the problem worse.
Poverty is a huge issue which never seems to ever go away or be fixed. There are many options as to what can be done to eliminate poverty but, not all options please everyone. John Kenneth Galbraith in his essay “The Position of Poverty” argues that “to eliminate poverty, we must invest more than proportionately in the children of the poor community (Jacobus). Money has been a very important tool that has divided the world and given humans labels as wealthy or poor. The wealthy seem to have worked hard for what they have but others not so much. Poverty has been growing and it has been spreading across the world. Those people who are poor sometimes have no chance to exit the poverty that have been in because of very little supplies or just not a great community or environment, some with very little food and they just give up and never keep trying to exit this moment in their lives. The rich must make an effort to try and redistribute the money in our nation to eliminate poverty for good.
In order to carry out this assignment research will have to be collected this will come from a number of sources including the following:
While poverty is inevitable, poverty drags down the development of the world. Living conditions, cause of poverty, barriers to ending poverty, and non-poor contribution can’t afford to be taken lightly. Poverty does not have one clear definition. It is a complex concept referring to multiple situations. By poverty we normally associate it to a situation in which a person fails to earn sufficient income to purchase necessities to life. The basic needs of life are, enough food, clothing, drinking water and shelter on the material level. The most obvious effect of poverty is hunger; however hunger can also be a cause of poverty. This is because hunger deprives those living in absolute poverty of the skill and strength to carry out productive work. Poor families are deprived of basic social needs like health and education.
Poverty has been a long-lasting economic crisis in the world. The effects are drastic not only on the world’s economic stability but the stability and well-being of many people as well. Change is needed. True change is the hope many citizens have living in poverty due to a broken, damaged system regarding poverty. To make the world a better, suitable place to live, immediate action must be taken to finally resolve this issue.
Ending world poverty is not an easy task. Many have tried to end this global problem with the notion that there is enough for the whole world. However, some regions have failed to succeed in the trial to end deprivation. In spite of the failure to end poverty, people like Jeffrey Sachs continue to have the optimism to demolish poverty. Class assignments reading and discussions have enabled the inspiration to acquire policies that could stop the cyclical development of poverty. These policies include the improvement and affordability of primary education in the developing region of sub- Saharan Africa. The prevention and cures of treatable diseases. As well as, the elimination on the food crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. The inspired
Poverty has been a consistent issue throughout the world caused by economic system and how it’s poorly organized. The unemployment rate has also been decreasing greatly within the country since so many people that continue to struggle with their normal lives resulting in a negative affect towards people’s lives, whether emotionally or physically, and changing the course of how people live in their environment of poverty. There are millions of people out there that are homeless and hungry, despite having lots of resources all over the world, it seems still not enough. People and government should strive to end poverty together for the common good of all.
Poverty is an extremely complex issue that requires an all-round approach that simply using one strategy to eradicate it will not suffice. An article written by Kaylie Tiessen in the Huffington Post uses these examples to show the many different needs people require when dealing with
One thing that can be done to reduce poverty in Nigeria is educating children while they are young so they can have a future instead of growing into poverty. This can be done by the help of the government and local communities. They are the ones that must ensure that there is improved access to both adults and the younger generations. Another thing that the government can do to reduce poverty in nigeria is to let citizens use the environment and natural resources to make profit. Nigeria is blessed with their abundance of natural resources so citizens should be able to use this to make money, they are not called the “Giant of Africa” for no reason. Lastly, More social movements that donate money and and make people aware of poverty in Nigeria should be made. If celebrities come together and fight for a cause, surely their followers will join in and try to help as much as possible which will make a huge difference in the country of Nigeria. These are some possible solution to reduce the poverty rate in
Poverty is a thing that affects a lot of people and there are several solutions given that there is enough money.
Poverty is a major menace to humanity existence in recent times majorly in the third world countries; it is one of the greatest threats to stability and peace more than other tussles like terrorism. The Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations to eradicate poverty everywhere in all its form and ensure quality education by 2030 shows the global commitment to ensure a higher standard of living for mankind.
