The renowned author, La Rochefoucauld, said, "To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art." Eating seems a harmless act; in fact it is an essential survival task for all life on earth. However, as humans become more successful and continue to grow in population, do we consider that the way we are producing and consuming our food might affect the future preservation of our planet? According to, " What Is a Sustainable Food System?" by Joan Salge Blake, the answer is no. A recent survey said that more than half of American adults are not familiar with the concept of producing food in a sustainable way (118). A sustainable food system is a method for food growth and consumption that humans can continue with forever without destroying the planet. In order to preserve natural resources, humans must produce food in a sustainable food system. There are three main categories to take into account for a sustainable food system: soil, water, and the consumer.
The soil is an essential element of a sustainable food system. A healthy soil is one of the most valuable resources on the Earth not just because of its role in growing food but also because it is the host of many organisms. The ground has all the nutritional components to raise the vegetables and fruits in people’s diet. Therefore, the soil needs special care to recover the nutrients that it loses in each harvest.
