Although there is disagreement regarding the proper human relationship toward the rest of the natural world, most conservationists can agree that biological diversity is valuable and that the extinction of species should be avoided where possible. In most developing countries survival is dependent on the extraction of natural resources. Therefore it isn’t surprising that this raging debate is based on the value certain species have for people. Animal conservation is a program most zoos take part in to conserve and save the native animals in their area. They are doing their part to boost the animal population that is still living free in the wild.
Ethical specialist Loredana says “There are concerns about protecting species or populations of wild animals, about protecting the ecosystems of which wild animals form a part, and about protecting the habitat itself. The wellbeing of the individual animals matters less where species, ecosystems, or wild nature is at risk. Constant predation is impacting many species and that is putting a stress on many habitats. But is it morally correct to not value the individual’s well-being? To value the greater benefit over the single animal? Some species are actually controlled as part of a policy to promote the success of other species. Is this helping the biodiversity? I say no. Society says no. Although, zoos do well in making us aware of decreasing biodiversity. Not only do they have websites, advertisements, commercials, infographics, advertisements etc. they provide us with a physical connection to the problem. It is difficult to be concerned about the fate of an animal you have never seen. The usual response to a real-life sighting whether in a zoo or in the wild - is emotional. Seeing and animal in flesh, hearing it and smelling it does have an effect on people. Not knowing the exact terminology of an animal is beside the point, because you have made and attachment with the problem, a connection with the animal.”
Scientist Zoe says “Artificial habitats remove the challenges animals face in the wild, that may lead genetic changes that may make individuals less able to survive in the wild, this can lead drifts in diversity and mutation. Loss of genetic diversity will
One of the most fun, visually amazing functions to visit are zoo's. Growing up as a kid going to the zoo was so much fun and basically guaranteed a great day out. People have been complaining and questioning the role of zoo's for a long time now. Some claim that it actually kills the animals off faster. Others claim that zoo's actually help protect and preserve the lives of these animals. Only one can make a reasonable argument by studying sources, and finding out statistics. Based off of the articles, "The Stripes Will Survive", "The Zoos Go Wild", and "Our Beautiful Macaws and Why They Need Enrichment", we can truly get in-depth analysis about the role zoo's play.
Zoos play an important role in conservation. It is important to realize zoos have breeding programs that help restore threatened species. As a result of those breeding programs, the Los
“People forget the good that zoos do. If it weren’t for zoos, we would have so many species that would be extinct today.” Betty White, a longtime well-known actress, stated for her fans. With a simple quote such as this one, so many truths come out of it. And yet, this statement can also be a cause for debate. Within this research, the ethical and logical reasons as to why zoos should remain in place will be explored, while also the counter claims will be examined. Zoos were created to help and protect animals while also to bring joy and education to the humans, they have continued to do so. Inhumane acts being done to animals are unacceptable. With that zoos are working to improve themselves as well as strengthen the animals, they are a necessity to the animals as long as they continue to help. How zoos benefit the people, have economic benefits, and give both education and volunteer opportunities will be explored further. Zoos have gone from a commonly accepted good to an institution the necessity of whose very existence is now debated.
In conclusion, conserving wildlife is crucial to the survival of humans and the ability to produce medicines and other important materials. Animals don’t have a voice of their own, they need help before it’s too late. As you realize animals are essential in everything we do and if they leave we will quickly follow. Conservation of wildlife is extremely important because the future generations depends on it. If you decide to take no action, you are not only letting animals down, but you are letting mankind down. Don’t make animals
There is a major debate going on about if zoos are continued. There are the couple of reason why the zoo considered to not continue. Some of the reason are that people are questioning zoos if they should continue because of the Panamanian, the golden frogs are like a national icon in Panama are going to be extinct. Zoos have been trying for years to breed them, but deforestation in their homes which leaves little chance that the frogs could make it. There is another debate is about they shouldn’t continue because there was this little kid who feel in a gorilla’s habitat, Harambe, which they had to shoot. Another debate that goes along that Zoo shouldn’t continue, are zoos are playing a part in both types of conservation of biodiversity? The two types of conservations of biodiversity are In-Situ and Ex-Situ. In-Situ is where you’re protecting the animal in its natural habitat. Then Ex-Situ is where you take care of the animals somewhere outside their natural homes.
Zoos are an unnatural environment for animals. Despite the benefits that may appear to come from zoos, wild animals should not be held in captivity. “A zoo can teach you a lot about how animals behave in captivity but will teach you very little about the behavior of animals in the wild” (2017). Although thought to be educational, zoos are not the best way to learn about animals. Zoos are said to help endangered species by using captive breeding and release, but research shows that captive breeding isn’t always effective. Zoos do not provide natural habitats and put unnecessary stress on animals.
Some people agree that animals should be kept in the zoo. They said it would be safer for the animals and they won’t be extinct. The amount of possibilities of them dying, shot by hunters or any other reason, still higher than the chances of their survival. Food and shelter are provided, medicine, and their breeding is being controlled. And many of the wild animals in zoos are ones that are on the endangered list as their amounts are rapidly diminishing. Letting them loose and returning them to the wild is not necessarily a safe option. (Mylot, 2007) In fact, zoo can be one of the educational studies for children and people who are interested with animals. Zoo is the only place that we can have an opportunity to see animal’s life really close and sometimes we can touch them. Zoos also provide lots of information about certain animals, children can have chance to get out of the classroom and learn so they can see natural beauty from different species of animals. Even children can see them from discovery channel but that’s really different if you see animal in real world, for an example, if you see crocodile, snake or shark in the movie, maybe you won’t afraid than you see the real one. According to Tudge, (1992, p.56) Zoos are the place where people can study animals and their habitat, even scientist don’t need to go
The animals do not have the ability to hunt or gather their own good because zoo keepers are there to feed and supply general care for them. There have been many cases recently where people have been killed right in front of other bystanders by a zoo animal. So, whenever someone gets killed, people should stop being so quick to say that it was the animals fault. What did you expect to happen when someone “falls” into a tigers’ exhibit? For example, the zoo is supposed to be an entertaining, yet educational attraction. However, the zoo is really a prison for the animals. They are caged in an environment where they do not belong. There is not much land for all of the animals a zoo carries because it has to accompany other animals and species too. Keeping them in an enclosed sanctuary can cause them to suffer from sadness and stress. Many zoos say that they are all for preserving an animal’s life and
How much do you really care about animals? Are the important to you? Years ago animals that lived in zoos were treated poorly and lived in a wire cage that was most the time to small for the animal. Today’s zoos focus on the animals more than anything. They make sure every animal is in its best health condition, properly taken care of and has plenty of room to roam, swim, fly, or climb. Zoos today also try to educate people on how they can help protect animals in the wild. Although animals in zoos are not able to hunt and their natural diet is limited, animals should be kept in controlled environments. If the animals are kept in controlled environments or zoos they will always be in there best health, in a safe away from predators, and can help increase
The author described, "With several programs supported toward both children and adults, zoos educate people about the importance of conservation and the needs and demands of animals" (Zoos: The Historical Debate). After being educated about these animals, people may spark a passion for biology, conservation, and the environment (The Conversation). In Britain, all accredited zoos must at least have an education program and a written strategy with it (The Conversation). Also, some accredited zoos reach further than these basic requirements to educate people (The Conservation). Zoos help educate people, but they also support further wildlife
With rise in poaching of wild animals for fur, ivory and supposed medicinal benefits, zoos appear to be the safe havens for animals. Moreover, captive breeding can help raise the number of endangered wild animals. Not only do zoos help the animals they show us the history, the background, and also the lifestyle of these living animals and what they’re providing for the animals to consider the zoo a home. As the prominent philosopher Doris Lin puts it, “Zoos save endangered species by bringing them into a safe environment, where they are protected from poachers, habitat loss, starvation and predators. Many zoos also have breeding programs for endangered species. In the wild, these individuals might have trouble finding mates and breeding.” (Lin 1). Doris’s theory of how zoos benefit the animals is extremely useful because it sheds insight on the difficult problem of not having zoos at all. It shows us readers who are against zoos, that there are upsides to them along with the
Something that I am very passionate about is animal conservation. I have been passionate about animal conservation for as long as I can remember. I was first introduced to animal conservation when I started watching different television shows by Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin. These two guys made it fun for me to learn about animals and how to protect them. Jeff would travel the world in search for endangered animals for the purpose of spreading knowledge about endangered species around the world. Steve Irwin did not travel outside of Australia unless he had to usually, he used his zoo to teach and the biggest thing about him was rescuing crocodiles. These crocodiles were either too close to humans or were in an unhealthy environment. Steve always
The advancement of human civilization and technology is a wonder and has been compounding at an exponential rate. We have been able to convert raw materials from the Earth to make our lives better with cars, computers, houses, etc. However the more our civilization evolves and humans occupy the Earth, the more animal species have been disappearing. The way we live affects animal species more than one may think. We affect them when we do things that change the climate, irresponsibly dispose of waste, and steal their habitats and homes. The Earth has already lost half of its wildlife in the last one hundred years and there is much more predicted to be lost in just the next 10 years. There is much to more to lose when these species goes extinct. Their existences is important to the ecosystems they may
Haven’t we lost enough? Animals are harmed by letting nature take its course, but human poaching is a major contributor. “Extinctions have occurred throughout our planet’s natural history. Some species develop as others die out, making space in the ecosystem for those best suited to any given habitat’s natural conditions. Long before human beings arrived, fossil records show that populations of animals evolved, thrived, declined, and became extinct." (Sexton)
In “Lost in the Wild”, Goodall tells us about her love for the animals, as well as her concern for their future. Through introduction, she discusses that many of the species had and would still be endangered or extinct due to the negligence of human beings. Goodall concerns, “Will a nature-loving child born seventy-five years from now long to see a live elephant as I longed to see a woolly mammoth?”. However, she also mentioned that “sometimes heroic efforts are being made to save and conserve threatened and endangered species.” She ends her introduction by points out the highlight of the stories she is about to recount next. The stories show problems and difficulties people faces as they work on the conservation of wildlife. One of the wildlife animals being discusses is the California condors. Goodall starts the story with a humorous description about the condors; she describes the redness of condors ' bare head and their strong wings. She continued by informs the readers about the decline of California condors and how it raised a controversial between the biologists and the “protectionist” regarding the issue of captive breeding. As the possibility of condors surviving in the wild decreases, the argument finally comes to an end when the “last wild Condors [are] taken into captivity” and “officially extinct in the wild”. Nevertheless, there are many problems occurred during the captive breeding, mostly the concerning the reproduction of the condors. The factors determined
