College writing has been a semester fill with different essays and ways of writing. Although, we have only written three essays during this entire semester (not including this one), it has helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Even though we did write essays, we also wrote many journal entries throughout the semester. By being able to express our creative thoughts out on paper not in an essay format was very beneficial to the course. Throughout this course I have had some easy parts and harder parts for sure, one being my grammar definitely needs some work. However, this course has helped shaped me as a writer. The first part of college writing I want to explain about is my unit essays. I personally feel like I did really well on them, for them being my first real college papers ever written. Throughout this semester I would have to say my best writing was definitely unit one’s essay and my not so greatest writing was unit three’s essay. In unit one it really allowed me to express my personal writing styles and personal life. This essay was able to help me show myself as a writer through the creativeness of expressing my background and how college is like through my eyes. However, on the other hand unit three’s essay had some troubles for me. Research paper types of essays have never been my favorite, I always feel too constricted when writing papers like that. My ideas are not able to be expressed how I think they should be when I write a research
As stated above, this section of the book specially emphasizes change of focus of your compositions when you start college writing. In high school your writing assignments are mainly executed using your personal opinions and your own self encounters. On the contrary, college writing is much more factual and involves critical thinking. Instead of your writing being inspired by your emotional thoughts on a subject, your words now need to be backed up by scholarly sources that can prove your information. This, however, does not mean that you will never write about yourself or your personal opinions, it just means that you need to provide proof for your beliefs. College writing also introduces you to different genres such as essays,
A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all thanks to the composition program.
English class has never been my strong suite. I always had to work twice as hard in English then I did in any other class. Writing paper always had me stressed and overwhelmed, I felt discouraged in my work. l never seemed to be able to get to the level I wanted to. I would try my hardest and paid attention in class, but when it came to writing the paper none of that seemed to help. I think that my experience in English Composition 1 has helped gain and grow in some areas, but I don’t think that it highlights a well-written college essay. Some elements that I worked to improving was introduction paragraphs, tone, style, and thesis statements.
In “Expectations for College Writing,” the author indicates the importance of thinking and communicating to succeed after college. A writer’s style acknowledges a social or academic expression. A writer’s skill to rationalize ideas and think critically demonstrates an essential technique for enhancing communication in the work environment.
Writing isn’t simply a skill that you can check off your list. The point of taking writing courses in college is to help you grow as an author and researcher. Take advantage of the great writing resources — including required composition courses — that your institution has to offer, to help you become the best writer possible!
Words are an essential part of everyone's life, from the time a baby is born words are encouraged to stimulate their growth because simply being able to say "milk" or "mama" provides the baby with a huge amount of power. In fact, they were even used to
The importance of college-level writing is a topic that is very much backed up and accompanied by facts and studies. Writing in the college-level is needed in order to master college work in any class. Basically all classes require you to more than likely submit some kind of research paper or essay. Writing for Learning to Improve Students’ Comprehension at the College Level by Fahad Alharbi as well as Luiza Costa Ribeiro, Writing Essays at College: Why it’s Important both go into detail on how important writing at this level is and all the skills learned for during and after college. As well on how you can benefit from them.
So, when I ask myself what kind of writer I am, the only answer I come up with is “not a very good one.” As far as me being able to write a college essay, I am fairly certain I am not at the same level as my fellow classmates. That being said, I hope that by the end of this term I don’t feel so intimidated by writing assignments. If there’s one thing I can say about myself as a writer,
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
When I graduated high school, I already knew that I wanted to attend college other than going to the work force. I heard stories about college being fun and it is one of the greatest accomplishment a person can achieve. So, I began college right after high school. As I entered college, I learned that I will have to focus more on writing papers than having fun. In high school my teachers did not prepare me for college essays. I feel like I learned a lot more failing on my college writing assignment than passing on the essays in high school. Well now I have approached the end of the semester of college, and I am exhausted from the constant writing assignments. Although the assignments were difficult like I said it was also helpful. Each assignment helped me in different ways. The assignments helped me improved with my grammar, time management, and how to process before I begin writing. In English 1010 I had different types of writing assignments. I had to write a literacy narrative paper, analysis paper, research paper, and lastly an autoethnography paper which I am doing now. An autoethnography is when the author uses self reflects to write about their experiences about writing a paper. English is not the only subject that I had writing assignments in. I also had to write assignment in my business class. My English teacher had informed me that I will have to do an autoethnography. So, I used my paper in my business class to reflect on how I write by
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I
When I see the word, college writing, I honestly start to feel butterfly’s in my stomach, to the point where I feel as if I want to throw up. I have always had trouble when it came to be one’s fate in writing. I hunch because I get bottled up and over think about how am I going to motivate myself to start writing, are the readers going to like my writing, does it sound acceptable enough, etc. When I see writing, I see a whole bunch of different essay prompts, like so much starts to pop up into my head. Writing is something that I like but have trouble with and now that I am a college student, I now understand the meaning of college writing and what it is that comes from it.
College writing has and always will be the biggest fear for any up and coming freshman to college. High school English really focused on detouring its student from making adolescent writing and grammatical mistakes in order to send the students into less of a blind disaster. My expectations for college writing is that there will be essays and other papers quite often, but not to the point to where I no longer have a life. I expect to become a more powerful and intellectual writer after even just the first semester of being in college. I believe I have always had a lot a great possibility
During this semester, I have strengthened my writing by trying new writing techniques, learning about purpose, and finding new ways of combating writers block. My first essay in this class was less focused then the essays I wrote later in
Over the course of this past semester, my ability to write has improved tremendously. Prior to undertaking this course, my expertise in writing was not as fine-tuned as it should have been. I had never previously been enrolled in a class specifically tailored to writing-- which was quite clear. Upon reading my past works, it becomes apparent that my writing style consisted of fluff, small words, and inconsistently structured sentences. These problems have, for the most part, been remedied with the coursework I have tackled in College Writing. Rather than long, drawn out papers that take an eternity to reach the primary point, my recent work is much nicer in terms of composition and grammar. I credit these improvements to the three primary
