In order to understand more about children’s backgrounds, educators need to build relationships, and open communication with their parents because they are the first children’s teacher. Having communication between the teachers and parents will help the teachers gain knowledge about children’s languages, tradition clothes, and food. In addition, the teachers will understand more about children’s development, interest, and wants. Then, they will be able to create multicultural curriculum appropriate children’s development, interest, and needs. In addition, they will able to provide books, and music with children languages, and materials that reflect and honor children’s diversities. There are different ways educators can communicate with diverse families such phone call, in person, emails, parent newsletters, home visits, school's website, conference, workshops for parents. For instance, I usually communicate with parent daily to share about their children’s progress, share different techniques for them to help their children to learn at home, and encourage them to talk about their concerns. Then, I have ideas to make an improvement in the learning environment for their children. In conclusion, having communication with parents is very important because it will help teacher ideas to create multicultural curriculum, understand about children’s backgrounds, and provide materials that reflect children’s diversity. The multicultural curriculum must be assessed regularly for bias
Parents are the main source of information about their children. Teachers have to gather information about home literacy practices and dialects spoken in order to provide a meaningful and relevant literacy program (Makin, Jones Diaz and McLachlan, 2007). Information related to children’s interests gathered from family can assist in the settling in process and in ongoing programming. Incorporating diversity into the program can be authenticated by getting parents involved (Birckmayer, Kennedy and Stonehouse, 2008). Teachers must attempt to actively involve parents in all aspects of the classroom. Despite efforts being made to involve parents, it is inevitable that some parents will show little interest or have little time to become involved; therefore, teachers must respect the level of involvement that a parent chooses. Utilising information from parents can assist teachers in developing relationships with their students.
Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.
The story provided an excellent discussion of the many issues that surround race in schools, it centered on the topic about whether integrated schools were more beneficial than segregated schools. This book focuses on young children in the early grades, listening to parents and racial integration. The author wanted to find the truth that is surrounding multicultural classrooms from those that are involved in it. This book includes many side stories, which serve to explore the concepts, and displays them in a clear way; it also added depth to the book. This book was well written and shows all sides of multicultural education. It does not take one side in particular and it encourages people to explore multicultural education in a new light.
A) Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.
What I learned and understand now is that it is very important to be a supporting teacher and be an advocate for the family and children. When there are many different backgrounds it is important to find ways in making the families come together with the classroom setting for example they talked in the video about the nature walk, which I think is a great way to have parent interaction. Being aware that at times children may demonstrate issues by other forms because their might be a language difference is very important because many young children try to communicate with one other, but it might be hard so they start to gesture in a nonverbal way. When you have labels and images I think it creates a better environment for the child and the parent
This website provides the five keys to having a successful communication with parents. When communicating with parents, at the start of the year they need to understand how you will keep contact. You should build a trusting relationship with the parent. You should assure parents that if there is a concern about the student, you will inform them. When a concern comes up, explain to the parents what strategies have taken
Today’s classroom is very diverse and the activities should represent the classroom culture. The development of children is centered on what is taught in the classroom. Therefore, the language, intellectual, personality, social and moral, and aesthetic and creative development of preschool age children should be enhanced through multicultural activities and lessons.
Positive relationships with children’s families are the basis of being culturally responsive. A child’s family is made up of the most important people in their life, and will have the greatest influence on their emerging identity. When schools and families work to build positive working relationships, it shows children that their background and language are accepted and valued. For a student, being accepted and valued helps children feel they are an important part of the school community, helps develop a positive cultural identity which builds their self-esteem, and supports their mental health and well-being. Home environmental influences are positively associated with the kinds of benefits desired by teachers for students. When parents are
Multiculturalism in today's society has become more prominent and something that needs to be addressed based on specific as well as on an individual level based on many different aspects. There are lots of different actions that can be taken, classes, seminars, books, internet webinars and such. However; I believe that none of this is effective without the interaction and hands on approach from the parents, famiies, teachers and the school administration itself. We can all sit back and quarterback a situation, but until it is in our own lap, we don't know how or what we would do to assure that the children that this effects is provided with the equal educational opportunities that they deserve. I believe that first
Some of the ways which teachers acknowledged the importance of children native language was by providing a multicultural teaching approach to their class rooms. An example of this was the teacher who sang a hello song both in English and Spanish. Students are encouraged to speak their native language. We saw example of teaching referencing back to the students to help translate the word pie. They support their languages and culture by acknowledge the similarities and differences in the ways a word or phrase is said in their language versus the English language. Teachers with children who speak another
As an educator it is important to be aware of the various learners in the classroom as well as being able to shift lessons accordingly to adapt to a greater number of students. In addition it is essential that culturally responsive practices is adapted in the classroom in order for all students to have a sense of belonging and are able to participate. For this reason, a teacher must actively use culturally responsive practices to engage students and their families because it helps to develop a relationship and maintain a level of communication. Learning “facts” about different cultures is not enough, it is more important that we make
Fostering cultural awareness in children has many benefits that contribute to the overall development of children. Educators encounter challenges that may include academic pressure, collaborating with diverse families, and meeting the needs of the students. This paper examines theoretical perspectives using a longitudinal study. The study examined the experiences of children ages 3.5 to 5.5, by using their everyday experiences of race and ethnic diversity in their classroom setting.
A Literacy Environment is very instrumental to young children’s learning. A learning environment that is culturally sensitive is to create a multicultural climate in the classroom. Multicultural awareness could be taught in all of the subject matters in a classroom. A teacher can use strategies and a teachable moment when they are encountered. For example, if a student is making fun of another because of how they talk or sound. The teacher can use that moment to punctuate the importance and relevance of different backgrounds and culture. The world we live in a diverse world with different religion, beliefs, color and shapes of people. A teacher should be verse in multicultural education to be able to teach students about
