Immigration will account for almost two-thirds of the nation’s population development. The population of mature Americans is anticipated to increase more than twofold. One-quarter of all Americans will be of Hispanic origin. Nearly one in ten Americans will be of Asian or Pacific Islander descent. Regardless of how diversity is defined, it is an issue that is sweeping the nation. By the 21st century, racial and ethnic minorities will constitute 25% of the U.S. population, affecting the makeup of the U.S. labor force (7). By the year 2000, women will constitute 47% of the total workforce and the average age of the workforce is expected to increase from 36 in 1986 to age 39 (7). If the corporate society does not address the issue by learning how to manage diversity, they will fail.
For over two centuries, the United States has a been a religious haven for anyone and everyone, regardless of religious belief. America has only been able to remain a powerhouse for this vast period of time because of their ability to accept and thrive upon diversity. Opportunities given in the United States allow and promote diversity, which brings forth understanding, perspective, and wisdom. Unfortunately, immigrants from certain religious backgrounds are not receiving the same opportunities that our forefathers believed each and every one of us are entitled to. Based upon the free exercise clause and the establishment clause of the first amendment, as well as section one of the fourteenth amendment, it would be unconstitutional to require immigrants to take a religion test.
Diversity is a very broad discussion today, it can range from race, gender, sexuality, political or religious views, or even mental disorders. In America, which is basically a melting pot of different cultures in itself seems to struggle with diversity in the one place it really shouldn’t, tv and movies. In the USA one of the most diverse place on earth, one would think that cultural diversity would not be an issue that needed to be addressed or be an issue at all. Right? I mean this country is probably the only place on earth where you can find nearly any nationality, ethnicity and type of people living among each other. You have Blacks, Chinese, gays, lesbians, transgender people, whites, Europeans, Africans, Middle Eastern people, Asians, and Hispanics, all on one piece of land. How can cultural diversity be a problem when the land is made up of so many different types of people? Shouldn't cultural diversity be striving in America? Television still doesn’t completely represent the diversity in America. Roughly three-quarters of film actors were white in 2014. There was only 12.5% African American, 5.3% Asian, and 4.9% Hispanic actors while there was 73.1% white actors. Studies also show the majority of actors are male. According to the annual 100 top grossing films 2007-2014 only 30.2% of speaking or named characters were women, while 73.1% were male whites.
America is a strong country, but no one ever said it was perfect, and it’s not. I don’t always agree with everything and love all of our choices. I do believe, though that I am very lucky to live here. We get a say to where we want to go, what we want to be, and how we want to live. There are some things that we should do better at, but doesn’t every country?
If you look at the people around you, you know they are not the same...why is that? We know the people in the world do not all believe in the same religion, or that they are not all the same race, or that we do not speak the same language. The dictionary defines the word diverse as being different from each other or made up of people or things that are different from one other. America is known for its diversity and it's often referred to as "the melting pot" because of the different religions, the cultures, and the amount of immigrants since the beginning.
It's important to understand our diverse country as a result of the various different people here in the US. The reason for all the diversity is that this country is a free country, not like where most of the immigrants come from. This country is also rich in resources and jobs that any could be hired. The country has one flaw, which is that many people consider they are superior than you so they will treat you like complete dirt. They judge you because of your skin color, race, gender, culture, background, etc.. they find ways to make you feel worthless, which isn't right.
Over the past few years a great deal of controversy has emerged in relation to the question about the legacy of American diversity. Historically, America has stood out as one of the most culturally diverse places in the world. Today, mistreating and giving less favorable opportunities to an individual who is powerless as a minority in society, and belonging to a specific ethnic group, has become the order of the day. For example, since 9/11, Muslims in the United States have experienced increasing discrimination in the workplace and large segments of the Muslim community have faced isolation from fellow American citizens because of differences of faith.
Year after year, the various departments and agencies of the United States Federal Government are becoming more diverse. The discussion of workplace diversity is not a discussion that is likely to disappear anytime soon in the future. To explain, the literature from Starks (2009) notes that by the year of 2050, minorities groups will account for fifty-percent of the population, in the United States of America. As a result, the discussion of diversity in the workplace is likely to still be a constant topic, for the various department and agencies of the United States Federal Government.
Diversity is known as having people who are different races or who have different cultures working in a group or organization. A diverse organization is one that values the difference in people.
