Topic A: Describe how your education abroad program of choice will benefit you as you complete your MTSU degree and in your future vocation or chosen field. Marcus Garvey stated, “ A person without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without a root.” I majored in Africana Studies hoping that I will receive the education and knowledge that will be able to fill the blank spots left in my mind by the African American history untold. Malcolm X, along with Garvey also believed that people who are not properly educated in their history or culture are lost. Senegal will, in some sense, be a start to helping me fill the holes of African American History and motivate me to keep learning as I near closer to graduation. Accurately accessing my heritage through studying abroad can be a gateway to my future career.
For example, one of my future goals that I wish to achieve with my Africana Studies Degree, is to have a collection of poetry written about the African American experience in this world. Actually stepping off of American soil and experiencing the way that African Americans are treated in other areas of the globe will be beneficial to the personal contributions of the collection. I am aware that African Americans are treated differently across the Globe and are even treated different by Africans. This distinction between the treatment of African Americans in different places falls into the purpose of my collection of writing.

Biondi states that, “Arguably the most exciting development for African studies in the twenty-first century is the expansion of doctoral programs. The opportunity to train young scholars can only add to the growth, rigor and institutional stature of the field,” (p 235).
Studying abroad is important to me for a multitude of reasons. The most pressing of which is,
I think it is important to understand that African people have been present on this Earth for a very long time, long before white people decided to rip them from their homes. Many people of America don’t know the true history of Africa and that Africans are the true creators of civilization. Because of this lack of knowledge about our history, I think many people don’t know the greatness that black people are capable of. We come from a long legacy of kings and queens, but many people think of us as thugs and felons and unfortunately some of our people perpetuate this myth. The study of the African experience is important because it is necessary to know where we come from in order to understand where we can go. Reading is the best way to learn more about our history. This semester one of the books that we are reading is Something Torn and New by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong 'o and he talks about the disembodiment of the African people.
Goal 1) I want to learn more about my how Africans lived, because it is the way my ancestors lived their lives and finding this all out will give me the knowledge I will need to know going forward in life. Goal 2) I want to know about the slavery, and all the things the Africans had to go through on a daily basis. Goal 3) I want to know about the African’s accomplishments even though they weren’t given that many rights. Looking at my goals, I am proud to say I met them, during this 7-week course I learned a lot about the past, many things I did not know about since it was never taught to me. I can say with this class I called home to my mom and discussed something new I learned about and she was very excited I decided to take this class, as well. I don’t plan to just stop here, I will expand my knowledge and continue to learn about the history and even the present things that are happening to Africans, for example to slave trade that is going on in Libya. One course-related accomplishment that I am proud of, is getting to know about the history of slavery, and seeing what my ancestors went through. Seeing how back then racism was terrible and even today African Americans still deal with it, and it will never
It is for this reason that I plan to undertake my graduate studies. The _______ Course at ___________would be a good opportunity for me to interact with the international student community and will also prepare me to excel in the global arena. I am confident that the program will help me accomplish my long-term goal of working as a senior analyst in a leading analytics firm using my professional educational background along with the program’s industry
Iowa State University prides itself on its mission to “Create, share, and apply knowledge to make Iowa and the world a better place” (Iowa State University Office of the President: Mission and Vision). This mission focuses on the success of each and every student that attends Iowa State. In order for Iowa State’s Study Abroad program to follow the foundational mission of the entire university, it had to create a mission that also focused on the students. The mission they have formed and stand today consists of: putting emphasis on developing strong international adventures. In order for students to go out to other countries to receive a quality education, the Study Abroad program must create a strong base on which they are able to form equal quality education as Iowa State provides no matter where a student goes. To promote opportunities that are inclusive and affordable for all students. To prepare students and directors for success when studying abroad. To advance standards of safety and uphold
While much of these courses did not pertain to my scholarly interests, they’ve allowed me to decipher the parallels between African and world history. Comparing, for example, Mali and Vietnam, it’s evident both countries were French colonies, which consequently nationalized their economic resources soon after their independence. Understanding these historical analogies has comprehensively enriched my education by adding cross-historical context to everything I’ve learned, and giving basis for appropriate solutions towards societal issues. Additionally, my previous volunteer work at the Jewish Museum has also enhanced my historical education beyond measure. There, I’ve amassed a wealth of knowledge about Jewish history and art, consequently developing an artistic “formal analysis” style of writing, for which I utilize in my academic work. African history is my subject matter, its artists are usually political actors like Mandela, the medium tends to be government, and I am a mere art critic, interpreting and persuasively arguing historical
Imagine going through life without a trajectory. Not knowing what you and your people did that did make a good impact on world history, only knowing your history as it pertains to oppression and devastation. That has been the experience of most members of the African diaspora living in the West. Knowing the reasons why our communities are dysfunctional and we are in a subservient position in society goes a long way in helping bring the change that’s necessary, but we Africans have been denied our place in history. For a long time, the perception of the history of Africa and Africa today has been through the lens of Europeans and

Fast forward 10 years, and I see myself sitting around a table with people from nay countries and endeavoring to reach a resolution. Although this career in international is important, I hope to balance my life between my career and other meaningful life experiences like developing deep companionships, travel, culture and giving back to the community. Because preparing for a meaningful life will result in preparing for a more focused and successful career. I enjoy being able to challenge new circumstances and therefore, it is my hope that my undergraduate education will offer me the opportunity to enhance my academic knowledge and qualifications and a variety of experiences both with the confines of the university and outside of the university.
Education is a never-ending learning process that has always been a piece of our life. As education is a building block in our lives, we are eager to put profoundly into our education. Good education will lead us to the bright future. With the fast advancement of public opinion, we have entered an era of information explosion which the necessity of studying abroad has turned into a developing pattern among youth. Most of the students feel that studying abroad is better than studying in local universities. As the saying goes, “the grass always looks greener on the other side of fence.” In this way, I believe that considering abroad have extraordinary points of benefits.
In the US, I witnessed the challenges of many Diaspora members, and I kept thinking about strategies to succeed and help others. While I was struggling to achieve my American dream that at one point I thought was an American nightmare, relatives and friends in Africa were unceasingly asking for my financial help more than I could and not realizing that, in order to obtain my doctorate, I had to go
