Teens need to be in Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities have a lasting impact on students that extend far beyond the high school years. Participating in these activities offers students the chance to try something new and learn what they most love to do. Being exposed to different sports, clubs and opportunities also broadens a person's horizons and opens up their mind to new and different ways of seeing the world. This exposure helps them learn to get along with others, problem solve and work together in a group setting. In addition, choosing sports as an extracurricular activity keeps teens focussed, healthy and fit. All students should be required to take an extracurricular activity outside of school because it brings balance into their lives.
According to Unigo, a college admissions advice website, some of the most popular extracurricular activities include debate, language clubs, orchestra and various physical sports. Activities such as these lead to developing life skills that will be useful far beyond high school or college and will carry a student into the workplace and throughout life. Participating in these activities helps students learn about their own preferences and ways that they enjoy spending their time. It could develop into a lifelong hobby or a source of stress management.
Participating in sports has important health benefits that helps balance out the amount of time students spend sitting in class all day. The average school day is
When students participate in extracurricular activities they learn lessons and concepts of leadership, teamwork, organization, analytical thinking, problem solving, and time management. In high school if a student wants to do a sport or other activity they will pick the activity that they like and enjoy. This is the kind of decision making skill that could help determine the type of career path for a student. By participating in extracurricular activities youth can find something they enjoy learn to use this in a career. “Participating in certain extracurricular activities having to do with the field that the student is interested in could help them find a job. If someone is looking at a resume for a potential employee, and they see they have experience or interest in what they are looking for, they will be more likely to hire that person” (Massoni). Having been apart of a particular extracurricular activity can be a positive influence in a job resume. This will cause students to find a new ambition in a career. Even on college applications these activities will affect if a student will be accepted, and in some circumstances many activities can earn a student thousands of dollars in scholarships (Massoni). In the United States, 57 percent of high school students participate in at least one kind of extracurricular activity (Bureau UC). Through extracurricular activities, youth have opportunities to develop very important life skills. Through participating in an activity that requires time outside of the normal school hours, students can learn to manage their time more efficiently. They must also develop rigorous study habits to perform well in the classroom as well as in their chosen activity or activities. Through team oriented activities and clubs, students must learn to work with others and attain interpersonal skills, along with a solid work ethic. Such activities provide a different type of environment than the classroom provides, and help them to become comfortable in various situations. There are many proven benefits when teens participate in extracurricular activities; such benefits include improved physical well-being, higher self-esteem, academic excellence, important social skills, and preparation to succeed not only school, but other settings as well.
How can sports help a student’s performance in school? To be able to play sports in school, students need to maintain their grades, thus motivating learners to do well in school (Harris). In addition, a sport allows a person to come out of their comfort zone to meet new people and build up their self-image. Athletes also experience positive health benefits. Especially at a young age, playing sports can help to reduce diabetes, heart diseases, and other sickness that could be very harmful to students (Morris). Sports is something all students should participate in because of its positive effects. Therefore, schools should require students to join at least one sport. If you asked my teachers about extracurriculars, they would say they take students’ time away from homework. If you asked me, I would say they keep students’ motivated in school and spark their interest. Almost anywhere you go, kids involved in sports are referred to as “student athletes.” Being a student should always come first, but athletics holds importance too. For many of us, sports are our whole lives. For me that is definitely true right now. Athletics have played a huge role in helping me develop through my adolescent life, but I am not sure they need to continue to play as large of a role going into my future.
Schools sports can be time consuming for many students since it does require having to do more than just games. Students might not even have enough time to finish the homework they are given due to sports practice routines. This can result in grades dropping and losing scholarship opportunities. In addition, they will also be missing out on their social life. They will not only be loaded with school work but chores majority of
Have you ever thought about how sports could really improve your life when you’re in school? “There’s little dispute that physical activity is good for kids: It not only helps develop muscles and fend off obesity, it also offers opportunities to socialize and learn new skills. Getting kids active is a key component of first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign, which says “children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day to grow up to a healthy weight”” (Physical). More students should be active in activities like school sports during and after school because they will be more fit, their grades will improve, and it can help students socialize.
There is a plethora of non-athletic activities which students, and people in general, are extremely talented in. If students are required to play on a sports team instead of physical education, they lose the option to participate in activities overlapping with practice and games. For example, theatre is very popular
In America today, many students’ lives revolve around active sports and recreation. While a few districts might say that school sports are major distractions to students and are a budget killer; various studies show that recreational sports are good for students both mentally and physically. Therefore, schools should keep sports in their extracurricular lesson plans because students that are engaged in activities focus more in class, they are stress-relievers, and they build character and teamworking
Stepping into a high school, one might find a poster advertising the school play, or a signup sheet advocating for more students in an after school club. But one thing you’re almost guaranteed to find is a trophy case commemorating the football team, or a banner promoting school spirit for that night’s game. In short? You’ll always find sports at a high school. As one of the most common extracurricular activities, sports offer something for everyone, and despite all of the stereotypes, stigmas, and unfounded claims surrounding sports, playing sports will positively affect your high school life and experience. Playing sports will positively affect high school life because sports improve your social interaction and mental mindset, it is academically beneficial, and it helps better and maintain
Sports have always been a big deal in America, and it seems that they are growing more and more popular every day. While some may argue that they build character and improve health; studies have shown that extracurricular activities bring about many problems and lessen educational focus. Therefore, schools should do away with after-school sports because they cause students to be distracted from academics, have massive monetary costs, and leave young scholars with little to no time for studying or homework.
Having before and after school sports today is just as important as it was for students in the past. Although participating in extracurricular activities can be a distraction; not getting enough exercise can have horrible side effects. Therefore, schools should keep after school sports because exercise helps students stay healthy, physical activities reduce stress, and it develops team building skills.
Extracurricular activities offered in school have many benefits for students. All schools generally offer sports and other activities after school, but not all schools offer extracurricular activities like band and Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) during the school day. These programs, and other programs that are similar, can be important in many students’ lives and leave a positive impact on them that will last a lifetime. It can equip them with skills that will help them later on in life and prepare them for the future. “One great benefit of your teen being involved in extracurricular activities is that they will learn about time management and prioritizing things in their life.” (Burgess). This is only one of the many benefits
It is important for adolescents to participate in extracurricular activities. Student who participate in these activities improve their academic scores and social life. Extracurricular activities can also help reduce many peer pressure related problems. “They enrich the lives of the students, their families and our communities. For most adolescents extracurricular activities should be required among what they do outside of school.
YoU’VE GIVEN mE oNE morE pAGE to tell you about myself. Just one. There are only eight boxes for extra-curricular activities, only three lines to tell about my summers, just over two inches to write a note to my future roommate, and only one page to fill in all the holes, to color in all the blank space. Unfortunately both for me and for you, entire lives don’t fit into boxes and personalities can’t be completely sketched on paper. I have to do my best to show you who I am, and you have to do your best to find me in all this black ink. So, best of luck to you. As for me, I will write just one more page and hope it gives you a clearer image of who I really am. You have noticed, I’m sure, my list of extra-curricular activities. What you can’t see is the struggle that went into compiling that list. For one thing, my practice list was comprised of far more than eight activities, so I was forced to group things together and to leave things out. Every summer and winter, I travel with my youth group on a service trip, sometimes within this country, other times around the world.
– Yet another benefit of allowing your teen to get involved in extracurricular activities is that it looks great on college applications. Most colleges not only look at grades, but they take a look at extracurricular activities that students are involved in while they are in high school. They want to see that students are getting out there and doing more than just book work. The activities that teens are involved in reveal a
