Grammar why is it so important? Many students, including myself, have asked this question at least one time in their academic career. The truth is in this age many people don’t know how to use proper grammar. Grammar and communication skills are increasingly necessary for many career fields. Jeffery Selingo is a writer for the Washington Post and said, in his article, that many national surveys say that employers are now placing a lot more value on good grammar skills (Selingo). Because of this, I need to improve my grammar skills. To be successful in my career, I will need to learn to develop these skills and master them. In the workplace, proper grammar is needed more than ever. Kyle Weins is the owner of the two companies, iFixit and Dozuki. Weins wrote an article for the Harvard Business Review stating why he thinks grammar is essential. One reason he gives is that having proper grammar gives people credibility in what subject a person is speaking. Another reason Weins gives on why grammar is important is that proper grammar represents oneself when not talking to someone in person such as being online. Weins also said that having good grammar increases people’s perception of little details which can help in other tasks that have nothing to do with grammar, like shelf stocking. The final reason Kyle Weins gave is that people judge others based on grammar and in deciding if someone is worth taking seriously (Weins). Susan Adams also wrote an article about the
How often do we as employees consider our use or misuse of grammar, spelling and punctuation in the workplace? Proper usage of grammar, spelling, and punctuation results in the use of Standard English. Standard English is known as the correct form of the English language. Is our misuse of Standard English in our workplace reflecting negatively upon us? Brad Hoover, the CEO of Grammarly, says, “Companies looking to hire top talent should consider grammar as one predictor of a candidate’s aptitude and success.” (Hoover). Many people may find the use of non-standard grammar trivial however, this is not the case in a professional atmosphere. Non-Standard English in the workplace provides no benefit to either the employee or employer and has only negative consequences. The use of non-standard English in the workplace will negatively affect our communication, image, chance for promotions and even our pay in the workplace.

Improvement to my grammar is the second area I’ve developed in this course. “It’s the little things that matter”, said by many people, and the way this relates to my second reasoning is due to the fact little grammatical errors matter too. When writing papers, I learned the skill to reread my sentences repeatedly, and see if it sounds right as an overall sentence. This skill, not only helped improve my writing, but also my texting. Improving my grammar is also useful when creating a resume, and applying for jobs and even scholarships. Overall, it is a skill I am pleased I learned to develop, and hope it improves even more over time.
Grammar is and has been a big deal in American society. It’s so big that we are require to take English classes all four years of high school. What’s the point of grammar if things are always changing and developing in English? The point is to not look illiterate and when a person goes college or decides to join the work force. In the book “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar”, the author Kyle Wiens states, “After all, grammar has nothing to do with job performance… right? Wrong. If it takes someone more than 20 years to notice how to properly use “it’s” then that’s not a learning curve I’m comfortable with.” (Wiens, 500) I personally agree with Mr. Wiens when he stated that comment. When you have a business and your trying to be successful and every aspect then its right to also be grammar savvy as well. The only thing I think is to extreme is the
I am a storyteller. I derive great pleasure from gathering people and telling them a funny story from my past. I love to entertain my nephew with stories I make up on spot. The best times of my life were sitting around with my friends and playing roleplaying games (games where the players utilize their imagination and interact as a fictions character). Creating fiction is an area of composition I am fortunate to enjoy and be strong in. With all of this being said, my skills in grammar were always lacking. Being a millennial, I grew up thinking grammar was a task technology could handle. During my years in high school, my sentence structure was very basic and I did not feel a need to improve on it. During my time in ENC1101, I was subjected
I believe it is important to promote literacy. It is important that people know about grammar, without it they would seem dense. I believe that
A contrast I noticed in the articles, “I Won’t Hire You If You Have Poor Grammar” and “Why Grammar Counts at Work” is that the article “I Won’t Hire You if You Have Poor Grammar” Wiens stated, “That’s why I grammar test people who walk in the door looking for a job” (Wiens, 2012). While in the article “Why Grammar Counts at Work” Adams stated, “The piece mentioned a survey of 430 employers taken earlier this year, in which 45% said they planned to increase training programs to improve employees’ use of grammar and other skills” (Adams, 2012). However, in the article “Good Applicants with Bad Grammar” McWhorter stated, “However, if all a new hire is going to write is the occasional memo – or less – I’d rank giving people a leg up over throwing away their résumé because they write “truely” instead of “truly” and don’t quite know their way around a semicolon” (McWhorter, 2012). While Wiens believes if someone is lacking in the good grammar department they should not be consider as a potential employee. Adams shows statistics of employers with employees of poor grammatical skills should be required to take additional training. McWhorter believes that just because someone is not up to par on their grammar doesn’t mean they are not going to be a
The positive effects of adult support for children can be witnessed as children gain confidence and show an increased level of self-esteem. These positive effects are reinforced when encouraged and given praise for their achievements from teachers, parents, carers, and other adults.
(1) Many if not most people grow up speaking a form of regional or social dialect. If you raise your comfort level with grammar, you’ll have more confidence that your speaking and writing won’t betray you among your more literate peers. (2) Many people who are confident that they know grammatical
Even though my grammar has improved during the progression of this class, I still have a lot to learn before my knowledge of grammar can contribute to my writing. I have never had an aptitude for
Grammar is a huge part when applying for colleges, jobs, and etc. Not only is it a set of rules and component parts that combine to form sentences, but it’s a criteria needed to succeed in life. We’re living in an era where every word is being shortened, abbreviated, or simply misused in a sentence, which isn’t good writing in the business or social world. Good grammar includes of great ideas with clarity, precision, and professionalism.
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that “language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified” (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own significance as it helps students
Larsen-Freeman (2001) as cited in Mart (2013), describes grammar as a system of meaningful structures and patterns that are governed by particular pragmatic constraints. This clearly indicates that grammar plays a crucial role in learning the target language. Grammar instruction is one of the most difficult issues that people have encountered in language learning and teaching. Therefore, the best way to overcome this issue is by
Grammar has always been an important issue in second and foreign language learning and teaching. Some hold the view that grammar is not essential for second/foreign language learning and therefore have a ‘zero position’ regarding grammar teaching. On the other hand, some view that grammar is necessary for second/foreign language learning.
