I am currently a senior at Boston University and am writing to apply for an internship with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. I learned about FEMA through the agency’s response efforts to disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the devastating Oklahoma tornadoes. Interning at FEMA would provide an ideal start to my career of public service, and I am confident that I would be able to contribute significantly to the goals of FEMA while developing the experience for a successful career in public service.
Academically, my diversified studies and psychology major at Boston University have allowed me to develop a broad perspective and to consider a variety of solutions to a problem before choosing the most effective and efficient approach.
Being academically more rigorous than my undergraduate, this degree refined my time management and critical analytical skills further, as the volume and quality of work were much higher. Further still, this degree gave me a historical account of psychology, introducing key movements that gave rise to the psychosocial model. The collaborative nature of assignments encouraged throughout my MSc, inspired creativity in my own work and proved to be extremely beneficial when designing multiple layered interventions. This made me aware of the benefits of working in a multidisciplinary team who can share a range of skills when obtaining a shared
Throughout my undergraduate career at the University of South Carolina, I continually found myself drawn to internship opportunities
time of crisis by R. David Paulison, who unlike Brown, has had a career focused on disaster
Throughout its history, FEMA has had two main missions. First, FEMA’s mission is to enhance the federal government 's capacity to deal with and survive foreign attacks. The main types of foreign attacks that FEMA is tasked to respond to relate to terrorist attacks and nuclear war. The second mission of FEMA is to assist state and local authori¬ties to respond to man-made and natural disasters that are to enormous for the local and state resources to respond to efficiently. While national security focuses more on civil defense, state and local authorities are more focused on natural disasters such as hurricanes, storms, floods and potential nuclear power accidents. These divergent focuses really presents FEMA with huge challenges since federal security authorities’ main objective is quite different from state or local authorities’ focus. Considering that FEMA designed the Federal Response Plan, the agency has the challenge of balancing these interests while working on its two key missions.
The basic definition of psychology is the study of human minds and there function, with respect to the affects the human mind has on behavior. The field of psychology is one of the most diverse fields that continue to expand and branch out into a plethora of distinguishing subfields; some subfields include retail marketing, legal work, social work and education (Sternberg, 2007). When deciding what career path to select one has to consider the level of education and scholarship they are willing to pursue. Pursuing and completing an undergraduate degree will earn an individual the title of a reflective scholar. A reflective scholar is a graduate that has completed a Bachelors or Bachelorette degree. Next, is the practitioner-scholar, which, is an individual that has graduated with a Masters degree. Following the practitioner-scholar is the scholar-practitioner, who is a graduate that has complete a program at a Doctoral level (McClintock, 2003). Each level of scholarship entails a pristine level of knowledge about the practices, strategies and techniques needed to establish quality and efficient

Should the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) move out from under the DHS umbrella to become a stand alone agency? Yes. We will discuss two glaring reasons that this should take place, budget & mission statement. Will it be an easy move? No, but after working out the administrative kinks, the FEMA would operate much smoother as it's own organization.
Emergencies and disasters happen every single day. They all vary in location and severity, but all of them have the potential to leave devastating and long term problem in the infected area if there are not proper steps in place to react quickly. For much of the United States history, there appeared to be no major go to organization in America’s greatest time of need. This paper briefly describes the history of these organizations and how FEMA came to be the USA’s primary reliance in their time of need.
Despite warnings of the impact, Hurricane Andrew the response was negligent and ill prepared. As predicted, the devastation was catastrophic. (20) Governor Chiles was either not informed as to how the state would be affected or was lax in his duties. The Governor waited too long before requesting help for the state. Governor Chiles felt that the state itself could handle the damages that arose after impact and refused government assistance. Once he realized the state could not handle the devastation on its own, government also waited for a formal request from the Governor before stepping in. The reaction from FEMA after the request was slow and ineffective waiting for word from Chiles. In essence, no one actually surveyed the damages caused by the hurricane and once surveyed properly; people had already waited too long and were in dire
For health 490, I am seeking to get an internship that will help cultivate certain aspects of my personal, academic, and career development. When considering my personal development, what I strongly want to improve upon are skills such as leadership capabilities, public speaking, and health communication. Natural disasters always bring many property damages, casualty and countless people who lost their home and all their belongings. "On May 22, 2011, the city of Joplin, Missouri was impacted by an EF-5 tornado. There were 158 deaths with over a thousand injured as a result of the tornado". Hurricane Katrina has been a good example as a warning on how the agencies as FEMA should have been handling the disasters. There were complaints from the survivors to the government, FEMA and other organizations that were involved in the rescue. Throughout the years, FEMA, the government, and some non-profit organizations have been working on the solution from the lesson of Hurricane Katrina and trying to minimize the casualty and property damages in the
The primary response or nonexistence thereof, as a result of Hurricane Katrina, showed great levels of inability and inefficiency by government leaders. The failures experienced by the government is a lot of blame to go around before and after Hurricane Katrina hit in New Orleans, Louisiana taking a lot of lives and making hundreds of thousands more homeless. The federal government were not ready or unprepared for the disaster that took place. The Federal Emergency Management also known as FEMA took several day to launch operations in New Orleans, Louisiana, and as they tried to establish their operation for the disaster they did not have an effective plan in place for the situation they had of their hands. According to Chris McGreal, "Bush
Barrio Logan is a neighborhood located half an hour from the border. This neighborhood was featured in Gangland, a TV show about dangerous gangs in America. A neighborhood where industries and factories shared the same air as people 's homes. At one point, Barrio Logan had one of the highest asthma related emergency room visits in California. The living conditions that residents were subjected to were under what we would consider a dignified quality of life. This is attributed by many, including myself, to the lack of educated residents in Barrio Logan: only 34% of Barrio Logan residents 25 and older have a high school diploma and less than 4% have a bachelor 's degree or higher. I am one of the few people of Barrio Logan with a high school diploma. I will also be one of the few to graduate from college. I was privileged enough to receive the education I obtained. It is because of that education that I understand that my community deserves better, not better than everyone else just better than what we have experienced. Through schooling, I have learned that I have the potential to effect change. I am a strong believer that education is the great equalizer and all I want is to provide access to higher education for all. Interning for a federal agency or corporation will expose me to the systems that allow for our country to function, providing the knowledge I need to impact the lives of

During the summer of 2015, I obtained an internship at Psychological Associates. I applied for the Organizational Development Intern position during winter break of 2014. After the assessment and interview process, I was given the opportunity to expand my knowledge in the field. Psychological Associates is located in the heart of Clayton, Missouri where I immediately fell in love with the culture and atmosphere of the company. No matter the organization or level of experience from the C-suite to the front line, Psychological Associates ensures companies are selecting suited employees for particular roles through assessing, developing, and guiding employees at all levels. Since I am pursuing a Ph. D degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, this experience played a critical role in my overall understanding of the profession and enhanced my skills to complement my education thus far.
