Relationship satisfaction is an important part of romantic relationships. A lack of satisfaction can lead to consequences in other areas of life and eventually, the destruction of the relationship. For example, job performance is heavily influenced by romantic relationship satisfaction. In a study by Greenhaus and Beutell (1985), they argued that poor satisfaction leads to poor job performance and vice versa. They stated this was to because these two spheres are “interdependent.” Satisfaction can also influence quality of health. Conflict in a marital relationship is associated with higher heart rates and blood pressure (Broadwell & Light, 1999; Ewart, Taylor, Kaemer & Agras, 1991; Flor, Breitenstein, Birbaumer & Furst 1995; Frankish & Linden, 1996; Kiecolt-Glaser, 1993; Mayne, O’Leary, McCrady, Contrada & Labouvie, 1997; Morell & Apple, 1990; Shwartz, Slater & Birchler, 1994; Thomsen & Gilbert, 1998). It is also strongly associated with depression and depressed syndromes (Beach, Fincham & Katz, 1998; Fincham & Beach, 1999). This relationship between marital conflict and depression seems to be bidirectional meaning depression is not only a result of conflict but also is caused by the conflict (Beach, et. al., 1998; Fincham & Beach, 1999). Because a lack of relationship satisfaction can negatively affect so many important areas of life, it is important to understand what influences the level of satisfaction held in romantic relationships.

The research article that I selected was interesting to me because it focused on romantic relationships. This information might be beneficial and valuable information to me in the future. Also, this article is interesting to me because I am minoring in Interpersonal Communication and this article could help me gain knowledge. Relationships of all sorts are important to a healthy lifestyle. Whether it is close friends, family, or a significant other, humans physically need the benefits of a relationship to survive. All relationships are different and unique, but in order to have a successful and rewarding relationship, it must be a healthy one. Throughout the duration of Psychology of Close Relationship class and outside research, I have gathered what a good relationship consists of and how to improve within that relationship. Luckily, I have a great boyfriend and believe we have an excellent relationship, but of course there is always room for improvement.

Dating has changed so much over time. With advances in technology, it’s easier than ever to strike up a conversation with someone new. However, in the past there have been scripts to follow, or an order to do things in. For example, someone would ask the other person out, they would start dating, get married, move in together, and then have kids. In today’s world, there is no set script. Many people are doing things differently, and in different orders. As people are becoming more and more tolerant of differences, dating is evolving to include things it never used to. With this all happening, dating and hooking up in today’s world is as messy and confusing as ever. Learning about it while also experiencing some of the same things first hand while at college has been interesting.

The family came by birth; we cannot choose who our parents and siblings. People we met at work is the other group of people that we cannot choose. However, we can choose who our friends are and who will be our partners. This term “dating” has been around ever since the early 1800’s. The meaning of dating has drastically changed over time. The young generation today has a very modernized idea of what dating should be. Dating is in fact dead and the idea of what dating is has changed for the worse.

Love takes patients and a sense of closeness and some teens are not able show this, but its not impossible. In fact Romeo and Juliet both showed closeness when they were willing to be disowned by their family just to be together as the quote was put in paragraph one she would rather be disowned then be apart from her beloved Romeo. Teenagers these days seem to be more careless as ever before because of how they think they are adults and because of that, they make mistakes that will hurt them in short term or long term. Sammy’s generation compared to his parents tends to make more mistakes due to their rebellious and carefree nature.

In a lifetime, a person will associate with many people, building stronger bonds with some friends or family member over others. Over time, some relationships will grow while others fade, however it is possible to preserve those connections that mean the most. There are qualities that will build the relationship stronger or break it down. Qualities such as forgiveness, communication, and respect can be the defining traits that make a healthy lifetime relationship.

Early adulthood is the point in a human 's life where he or she is able to establish intimate relationships as well as friendships. Studies suggest that one is not fully developmentally complete without the formation of intimate relationships, for without them a person would become isolated and develop a fear of commitment, and likely, a mistrust in other people. To be able to form such intimate relationships one must have appropriately progressed through the earlier stages of life successfully.

This literature review will first define romantic relationships and explore what exactly happens in the development of these relationships. From the research found, individual’s age or sex did not necessarily affect the differences in communication. Some research claimed that communication itself defined a romantic relationship; while other researchers said that a couple having the conversation of, “what are we?” was enough to define the relationship. Sometimes it was mutuality in a relationship that helped define it. Mutuality in relationships was often increased with positivity and compliments between partners (Doohan and Manusov 2004).
