People in the United States should learn how to understand and speak a foreign language because it can limit the barriers between different people. Each day we come across various people, which is why we ling in a “melting pot,” a diverse nation with different ethnic groups immigrating or traveling. Since the United States is a part of a global economy, the relationship we have with other countries will improve. If we are able to speak a foreign language, it can remove the barriers between people and cultures, thus uniting people. According to CNN news, about “1,051,031 people are granted lawful permanent residence” in the year 2015 (Immigration Statistics Fast Facts). The immigrants consist of people from Mexico, China, Philippines, India, and Cuba, which means that the different ethnic groups in the United States increases the cultural heterogeneity. As the diversity continues to grow, the United states is gradually enlarging its different cultures and traditions. Therefore, people should learn a foreign language because it can generate less prejudice towards people who are different from us. Prejudice can divide a community and eventually lead to violence, harassment, and racism. When an individual has a limited understanding of other people that are different from them, they can create stereotypes of that person. This can possibly lead to intentional racism, feelings of inferiority, and being hurtful to another culture.
What is your first language? Do you remember your first words? How about learning to pronounce or spell words of your first language? Would you ever learn a foreign language because it sounds like a lot of work. Today some students are required to learn another language. However all students in the US shouldn't have to be required. Some reasons may include students never using the language, not learning another language would free up time, and students may not learn as much as people think. This is why students in the US shouldn't have to be required to learn another language.
I am very fluent in Spanish now and I my young children are as well. So even speaking another language is helping us grow. Diversity in society helps us grow as individuals and opens our minds to different ways of life.
In the article “America’s Foreign Language Deficit” by David Skorton explains how learning another language can have many effects. The author, David Skorton, claims that by having the next American generation learning a foreign language, it will prepare them for success in the future. This is a logical claim. First, as the author points out, “[America] need[s] diplomats, intelligence and foreign policy experts, politicians… who are proficient in languages other than English” (Skorton). For example, the military often needs people who can speak a different language for many different reasons, such as having an important meeting with another country. In addition, American businesses need to know how to communicate with other businesses outside
The great thing about America, is that it’s a country that accepts people of all different cultures as citizens of the country. This is a distinguishing quality that no other country in the world shares. By having this unique quality, it drew in nearly every imaginable kind of person to this country, a country with just one primary language, English. With that came hundreds of new languages spoken by the immigrants. To this day there’s still people who isolate themselves within their ethnic groups, instead of learning to speak English, the most prevalent language used in America. There’s something to be said for learning at least a little of a language whether someone is visiting a country for a day or planning to live there for the rest of their life. It shows that person cares about the place they’re in, and that they respect its residents. According to Brice, “Making English the official language would encourage new migrants to learn the language of the country they have adopted as theirs. The end goal is to unite the American people, while improving the lives of immigrants and native born inhabitants.” Speaking and
If people maintain their native language, then they can represent their culture and linguistic needs in government. This way of thinking about multilingualism breeds acceptance and appreciation of other cultures and languages. Finally, I agree with and enjoyed Benjamin Rush’s commentary on multilingualism. He, “expressed his concern that, “narrow-minded people,” fearful of retention of the German language among Pennsylvania’s citizens, would not recognize the benefits a German college might provide the nation. The spread of learning among citizens, no matter what their native tongues, was crucial to the cause of the government” (23) by promoting democracy through freedom of speech and freedom of language. Additionally, multilingualism works to make stronger foreign relations, advances in science, math and all other research and allows America to communicate its success to other countries, The presence of multiple languages makes America the accepting, culturally diverse mixing pot that it is
Most people who come from a family that is not from the United States of America or England do not know how to speak english. When those certain families migrate to the U.S.( if they choose to) or any other country that doesn't speak their native language decide to start a family, the children who they give birth to and raise are going to be able to speak both their native language and the language that is spoken where they live.Being bilingual can help you by opening up more job opportunities, having the pleasure of accessing more than one culture and it can improve your multi-tasking skills.
If immigrants were required to learn the English language, it would be beneficial to them in the long run. To begin, knowing two languages can help the students at school. If a new student moved to Butler County High School, it would be difficult to make friends if they could not speak English; therefore, knowing English can help make friends at school. Also, knowing English can make classes easier to understand, and easier for teachers to lecture to the immigrants. If the teachers do not know much about the language, it will make their job of teaching them very, very difficult. Next, immigrants who are bilingual have a better job experience. Working in a care-giving facility, the employees’ job becomes complicated if a patient speaks a
“We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.” --Theodore Roosevelt, 1907. Declaring one language the official language to be spoken by all citizens in the United States, it professes unity, and portrays to all other countries that the country cannot be divided, especially not the border between languages. America was founded on the idea of something special, unity. (It is called the United States for a reason.) By speaking the same language it creates an unified environment. Creating an end to discrimination to those who do not speak English. It creates a better future, a safer future for every citizen in the country, by uniting together as a
We live in a nation that is full of diversity. People from different countries have left their native country to start a new life here in the U.S. Not only are they leaving their families and friends, but also their culture. With these new beginnings come new struggles. Many of these people come here not knowing the culture or even the language. They may settle in communities with other people who share their culture and language, therefore, not giving themselves an opportunity to learn and experience the new culture and it language.
“Massive increases in funding at the local, state or federal levels,” said Paul LeClerc. I agree with this quotation because people with skills and knowledge will increase in funding, state or federal levels. It reminded me of my uncle, which he is Four Stars (O-10) as a General, or an Admiral in Kurdistan (Iraq). He speaks 4 languages he speaks Kurdish, Arabic, English and Turkish he learned all these languages in school he went to University of Kurdistan Howler. He is where he is now it’s because of his knowledge and his skills. He has a good relationship with others because he can speak their language. So it’s good to learn other languages in school because it can help in the future or now you. You never knew it came in handy
Language is an important part of our lives. I remember when I arrived to USA I could speak a little English. I went to school to improve my language, reading and writing skills; even now I am learning my second language, without English I cannot survive in this new environment. Now I am raising my own kids and I want them to have this important skill, this privilege of knowing a second language, language of their parents and grandparents. By looking at studies of bilingual children, research shows how important it is for a child to learn a second language. Raising a bilingual child is a benefit because it improves social skills, academic proficiency, introduces child to a different culture, and prepares for the future.
The number of Languages spoken throughout the world is estimated to be 6,000. Although a few languages are for wider communication around the world, these are very often spoken as second, third, fourth, or later-acquired languages. Fewer than 25% of the world 's approximately 200 countries recognize two or more official languages, with a mere handful recognizing more than two. Despite there being lots of bilinguals and multilinguals, there is also a bunch of monolingual people in the world. The adult population is allowing their children not to learn a foreign language, drastically underfunding language courses in middle to high school level classes. Because they think it 's not necessary in this century, thinking they don 't require communication with other people from other countries. But the truth is that it can actually benefit in more ways than people think. The United States school system has started to not require foreign language class for graduation requirements, this places the U.S at a disadvantage in the world scene.
The language barrier is one of the biggest problems people face when they move to another country. Many immigrants who come from other countries are met with many linguistic challenges that not only impede their control of daily life tasks but also their ability to survive. I believe that it is important for immigrants to speak a national language. If they are unable to speak a national language, they will be unable to function to the fullest and therefore become isolated and disempowered from the community.
Language is a key part of any family, community, culture and the human race. Without language the world today would be much different. From cavemen, to the Egyptian use of hieroglyphics, to Old English, to more than 6,500 languages spoken around the world today, the advances that humans have made in language is remarkable and inspiring. The ability to speak, read, write and understand more than one language is also remarkable and expands the liberties in life, especially for young people. High school students should be required to take at least two years of a foreign language class in order to graduate, as many recent studies support the benefits of doing so. Students who have learned a foreign language in high school have proven to have a
In order to be successful in America you need to know a bit of English. Immigrants should not be mandated to learn English, but learning English would help them to succeed. Most Americans want the immigrants to learn English, but are not willing to help them. If Americans help the immigrants, not only will they be able to succeed, but their children will also succeed. People are always complaining when immigrants speak their native tongues. Immigrant children get assimilated through the school system, but their parents do not have the same opportunity to assimilate. This leaves the children to be translator for their parents. In order to help immigrants to succeed, the United States needs to not only assimilate the children, but also help the adults who have a harder time learning a new language. Through helping the immigrants learn English, Americans are ensuring that not only will the immigrants prosper, but the United States as well because she will have workers who are better skilled and are able to understand each other. According to the 2000 Census, fluent English-speaking immigrants earn nearly double that of non-English speaking workers and have substantially lower unemployment rates. (GCIR) This census shows that if the immigrants learn English then they can proper. If Americans help the immigrants learn English
