Monuments can be seen all around the world and they can be a way for different states to show the world what they have gone through or what they are proud of. Deciding to build a monument to honor or bring awareness to an important event can turn out to be difficult. There are many factors that need to be looked over and thought out properly before making a final decision. For example, the location of the monument needs to be considered, time and money should be included, and who/what the monument will show is also a factor that is important when deciding to construct a monument. The location of a monument is extremely important and should be one of the most important things that should be considered. Moreover, the location should be somewhere important that would not conflict with historical landmarks or that will cause problems for the people living around the monument. For example, in Source D, Kosareft explained how the cemetery in Savannah Memorial Park was in danger of being removed because developers want to use the land. This is an issue because the cemetery holds the graves of the San Gabriel Valley pioneers and is an important landmark to many of the people living in Savannah. Using a location like this to build a monument is not ideal because it would destroy a place that holds a lot of history. Additionally, in source C, Lawrence Downes states that the location of Mount Rushmore had destroyed the Sioux’s homes/land. Downes says, “It was bad enough that white
The most stunning monument in our capital is the Washington Monument. At 555 feet high, it is the tallest such monument in the world. It is an obelisk by shape, yet not a true obelisk because it is not carved out of a single stone. The monument was built at intervals between 1848 and 1885. It memorializes George Washington's achievements and his devotion to principles and to his country.
From Trajan’s Column, completed in 113 AD, to the statue of Christopher Columbus in Easton, Pennsylvania, monuments and memorials have been a significant element of celebration and honor throughout history (Source B). Though monuments are typically meant as a symbol of honor, recent controversy over statues dedicated to Confederate leaders and generals has sparked the debate over how to choose subjects to memorialize, and the actual development of these memorials. When considering what or who to honor, one must also consider the subjects impact on history, ensuring that it is positive. In creating memorials and monuments, groups and agencies should examine the historical significance of the events or persons they wish to memorialize, and the
There are many monuments in the world and they are all built to honor someone or something that was done by that person. For example, after the Maine Lobsterman was built, the fake bronze statue returned to Maine and spent several decades being moved from city hall to museum to museum. No one seemed to want the man and his lobster. The issue at hand is if the monuments being built are memorializing the person or moment created accurately. Monuments capture legacy and preserve the individual's actions throughout history. Specifically, monuments should consider purpose, location, and size in their creation.
"For famous men have the whole earth as their memorial" (Pericles). Memorials are an icon to represent some historical events that have happened or even people who have made a significant impact on society. For example, they symbolize many things that had happened in the past and people could go there and remember some good things that it has caused. People can even go there and pay tribute to the person the memorial is about. There are three sources that show the importance of memorials and why they should be built.

The modern nation is presently changing, and is always changing, especially politically. To begin, confederate monuments are statues of fighters in the Civil Rights movement during the Jim Crow era. There is currently a debate going on in the United States to whether these monuments should continue to stand or should be taken down for various reasons. In the southern region of the United States, there are over 700 statues that remain. Although many say that monuments preserve the nation’s history, they should be removed because they represent white supremacy and are a reminder of slavery.

In 1861 there was a war that turned north against south family against family. After their war the created monuments that represent the brave leaders that fought for what the believe in. Now there is controversy over if the monuments should be destroyed. This has created a titanic fight between tow sides one side is for the monuments being destroyed and the other side dose not want it to be destroyed. Did you know that the people who built many of the Egyptian monuments we know today (also know as slaves) suffered while making creating the monuments.Well in ancient Egypt, slaves created the monuments that there still is and many of them were killed in the process of building them. Is a good monument or memorial all about looks, or is it about the contextual meaning behind it. Thesis Argument: I understand why some people would want to replace or even destroy the monuments, but that is not going to rewrite history. The problem with monuments is where does the line get drawn? Is a detailed examination required to figure out if its racist or not? Or are we just going to assume that all monuments
Monuments are used to memorialize and honor moments, individuals and events of the past. Some monuments do this better than other monuments. In creating a monument there are three essential factors a group or agency should consider to make the monument as effective as possible: location, design features, purpose and backstory. Why these factors? Location and design factors play a massive role in the reception the monument will receive, based on its environment, size and looks a monument will be perceived differently. The purpose and backstory are the two single most important factors to consider in creating a monument. The monuments history, its reason, is the reason just? Is the purpose proper? Does it accurately memorialize the subject? All these questions come with the purpose and backstory of a monument.
