Comprehension is also an important factor when speaking of literacy. Students should be taught the many strategies that will help them with comprehension and word recognition. In my experience in a first grade classroom I used many of these strategies. Within my lessons I included the activation of prior knowledge to construct meaning, the use of context clues in a sentence, pictures clues, predicting, and drawing inferences about ideas or characters in the text. I always made sure that I modeled the strategy for the student before they set of to do it.

Every single day, it’s used, whether it’s for an Advanced Placement Language class or reading a billboard as you’re driving past. As a child, I grew up reading on a daily basis and I believe that I am as successful as I am on behalf of it. Countless memories have been created, thanks to the multiple books that have been read and the umpteen amount of papers that I’ve written. Throughout the numerous years of my education, my teachers and parents left a long lasting impact on my reading and writing skills.

As time goes on the familiarity with reading and writing is essential for an individual to better themselves in life, for the world we live in is a place for competition between every human to succeed. The value of literacy is not only for high-end people but anybody that want to gain knowledge. As one gains knowledge through literacy, it can extend toward one achieving their goals or achievements in life. The strategies when going over a reading assignment is a significant part of what one is trying to comprehend the text.

Students may be able to read a text, pronounce words, but have no idea what is being interpreted. Not understanding what is being read can make reading seem like a chore or just boring to students as they see no point in reading since they have no idea what is going on. Teachers need to make sure they teach students how to monitor their comprehension so students can make sure they are comprehending what they are reading and gaining a meaning experience from it not just reading

To combat this problem, teachers should spend around half of the class period going over the material and the other half going over questions and getting students involved with the material. If teachers show examples of the material, that will help the student full

Always the teacher can help the students but they need to work together, the reader attend the instructions of the teacher and read a text , then the teacher analyze the way that the student read the text and they evaluate if they ca improve the way used. Advising the student to use different strategies whit the same task and observe or analyze if the reader improve their comprehension. The teacher needs to be near if the student and vice versa.

Student survey responses corresponded with the most expressed concerns of teachers. Of the 45 students surveyed (proficient and deficient learners in reading comprehension), all expressed that the vocabulary within a text is difficult and makes it hard to comprehend a reading. Furthermore, 73% of students said that language (the language used in the text and the format of a text) in historical or English readings were confusing. Finally, 86% of students said that most of what they read in class was boring and they found very little interest in the reading.

They say they are bad at reading when it’s possible that they simply aren’t being reached by the material or strategies being used in their class. No one student can be good or bad at reading all the time. It is a relationship between the person and the text. The strategy of reading a passage three times and summarizing each paragraph does not ensure that students are active readers. This literacy gap affects students’ abilities to access core textbooks and communicate and write effectively within the various subject areas. The literacy gap catches up to many of our students as they enter high school and feel overwhelmed by the challenges of increasing academic standards and more difficult vocabulary. Because they not only lack the language that will help them access and understand their classes, many students struggle with content-area reading and writing in these subjects. This could be an easy fix if the instructors that stood before these students were able to take the mastery of their content and adapt it as it deems appropriate for the young minds they are partly responsible for. Children who lack the academic language of school struggle to meet literacy requirements, and they often feel overwhelmed in the classroom. This is just the beginning of the spiral because once the students have met that stage of being overwhelmed, they often begin thinking of the short term way of dealing with this, which could be anything from completely giving up and having the grades that show this or actually dropping out.

The theoretical framework is founded on the pretense that much has been written concerning the problems that many students have with the comprehension of reading materials, especially content texts--science, math, and social studies. Alexander (1988) suggested that these children may be those who have little trouble with their basal readers or trade books, yet are unable to derive meaning from what they read in content area textbooks.

Reading is a skill often taken for granted but it is essential in order to progress in life. For a child being able to read well helps them learn new things, give ideas and enables use of imagination. National literacy trust (2015) suggests that children’s early language skills can have a major impact on a child’s development of literacy skills. Five-year olds with poor language and literacy have a higher risk of underachieving at age seven and beyond. Reading skills encourage more opportunities in life and it can affect a child’s wellbeing if they do not achieve this effectively (Finnegan,2015).

Good reading comprehension is a fundamental element that students must have to attain. Through researches, it is clearly stated that reading proficiency has a strong relationship between reading proficiency and academic success at all ages included in the university level. It is definitely important to discuss what strategy is the best way to practice to improve BSIE students reading comprehension for the sake of students’ success in the field of teaching.

The failure of students being able to read and comprehend what they are reading is a great concern for most schools. When students enter the fifth grade and are not on grade level, they are already behind their classmates. Teachers are then responsible for remediating the students to get them on grade level. Unfortunately, these same students are unable to keep up with on grade level standards teachers are required to teach, because they lack the skills needed. These students will continue to struggle throughout their education because they will not be able to catch up to their grade level. Many educators have realized there is a gap between fluency and comprehension. Because of this realization, special instruction such as guided reading and remedial teaching has been implemented.

At the core of this subject is the understanding that students must be able to read before then can navigate a complex word problem. The question then becomes “how well?” According to the study by Verzosa and Mulligan (2013), “researchers contend that word problem-solving difficulties mostly originate from linguistic or text comprehension errors”. This means that many students are prevented from proving their current mathematical understanding due to their inability to understand the text.
