One of the important skills to be mastered by students when learning English is reading skills. By having a good skill in reading, the students can gain information and expand their knowledge. Reading is not only the skills that support success in schools but also the skills that need to be owned by every individual in the life of society, both during the study and after completing the study. They tend to look up the dictionary to find the word that they do not know. Therefore, the students spend a lot of time to translate sentence by sentence. Thus, despite all efforts, their reading comprehension remain poor.
Secondly, the students are not really familiar with the text. In other words, the students just do not know what to do when they are given a text. They do not know how to find the content or information from a text. In fact, the students do not know how to answer the question even though the information has already explained in the text they read. For example, they just completely copy the sentence in the answer sheet without edit it out because they found the same word as stated in the sentence in the text and the question. By knowing this fact, it shows that there is a clear unfamiliarity of students with the text.
Thirdly, the use of teachers’ conventional strategy can be one problem that makes students’ reading ability still low. The teacher has difficulty to choose the proper strategy in order to cover the students’ problems so that they apply the conventional strategy. They usually ask students to read a text from English textbook, find the meaning of difficult vocabularies and answer questions provided in the textbook. Comprehension is also an important factor when speaking of literacy. Students should be taught the many strategies that will help them with comprehension and word recognition. In my experience in a first grade classroom I used many of these strategies. Within my lessons I included the activation of prior knowledge to construct meaning, the use of context clues in a sentence, pictures clues, predicting, and drawing inferences about ideas or characters in the text. I always made sure that I modeled the strategy for the student before they set of to do it.

As a child, I grew up reading on a daily basis and I believe that I am as successful as I am on behalf of it. Countless memories have been created, thanks to the multiple books that have been read and the umpteen amount of papers that I’ve written. Throughout the numerous years of my education, my teachers and parents left a long lasting impact on my reading and writing skills.

Students may be able to read a text, pronounce words, but have no idea what is being interpreted. Not understanding what is being read can make reading seem like a chore or just boring to students as they see no point in reading since they have no idea what is going on. Always the teacher can help the students but they need to work together, the reader attend the instructions of the teacher and read a text , then the teacher analyze the way that the student read the text and they evaluate if they ca improve the way used. Advising the student to use different strategies whit the same task and observe or analyze if the reader improve their comprehension. The teacher needs to be near if the student and vice versa.
Student survey responses corresponded with the most expressed concerns of teachers. Of the 45 students surveyed (proficient and deficient learners in reading comprehension), all expressed that the vocabulary within a text is difficult and makes it hard to comprehend a reading. Furthermore, 73% of students said that language (the language used in the text and the format of a text) in historical or English readings were confusing. Finally, 86% of students said that most of what they read in class was boring and they found very little interest in the reading.
They say they are bad at reading when it’s possible that they simply aren’t being reached by the material or strategies being used in their class. This literacy gap affects students’ abilities to access core textbooks and communicate and write effectively within the various subject areas. The literacy gap catches up to many of our students as they enter high school and feel overwhelmed by the challenges of increasing academic standards and more difficult vocabulary. Because they not only lack the language that will help them access and understand their classes, many students struggle with content-area reading and writing in these subjects. This could be an easy fix if the instructors that stood before these students were able to take the mastery of their content and adapt it as it deems appropriate for the young minds they are partly responsible for. Children who lack the academic language of school struggle to meet literacy requirements, and they often feel overwhelmed in the classroom. This is just the beginning of the spiral because once the students have met that stage of being overwhelmed, they often begin thinking of the short term way of dealing with this, which could be anything from completely giving up and having the grades that show this or actually dropping out.

The failure of students being able to read and comprehend what they are reading is a great concern for most schools. When students enter the fifth grade and are not on grade level, they are already behind their classmates. Teachers are then responsible for remediating the students to get them on grade level. Unfortunately, these same students are unable to keep up with on grade level standards teachers are required to teach, because they lack the skills needed. These students will continue to struggle throughout their education because they will not be able to catch up to their grade level.
