Drug abuse is rampant on our island and we do not have enough resources to help with the problem. The majority of all the CPS cases, a good percentage involves drug abuse. I know first hand of how drugs can ruin a person's life and relationship with a family. When it comes to dealing with family and drug abuse it’s even harder, because this is the person you love and unable to help. My parents struggled with my younger brother and his addiction. It came to the point where my parents had to call law enforcement to intervene. It was heartbreaking to watch my brother's life spiral out of control. He turned into a different person and was very disrespectful to my parents, family members and friends. Thankfully he was able to get help and went into treatment. He still has a long way to go, but at least he is clean and sober. He is also taking steps to get his life back together and mend broken relationships from the past. What our island is in need of is a good inpatient treatment center one for adults and one for youth. The treatment center should also focus on components that will help a person get their life back on track, such as counseling, education, and job readiness. Having social diversity and understanding other cultures and background are important and key to becoming an effective Social Worker. Having culture sensitivity and learning to appreciate and understand all backgrounds will be a big plus when helping diverse families.
