I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old. I want to change my line of work and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I am sure the fact that I was brought up by two extremely dysfunctional parents and the engaged in relationships that were of that same caliber, has much to do with why I believe I have something of positive significance to offer today. In short, I married at 19 years-old and had 5 children. I married an alcoholic and abuser of all forms and although I knew he drank and was abusive, I did not understand what I was dealing with back then in 1975; I did not understand abuse then as I do today. I grew up in it; I was very accustomed to it, it was normal to me. Ten
Working in the social services field was always my dream. Whether working with children, family, adults, elderly etc. this career path is so broad it instills the hope of a career opportunity. My first year working in this field was in 2010 when I interned as an intake specialist in an outpatient drug treatment facility, while completing my bachelor’s degree in human services. Thereafter, I was able to branch off in various areas such as a case manager at a domestic violence shelter, housing specialist, substance abuse counselor and now a family services specialist.
Social justice and social services have always played a vital role in my life. From leading canned food and toy drives in middle school to volunteering in school settings and soup kitchens, I am dedicated in assisting others to meet their goals and removing obstacles that may present as a disability or create discrimination. Through the experiences of engaging with individuals from different populations, I have realized the importance of working on a macro-level of social services. An individual’s presenting problem often develops from a systemic issue. From a social work perspective, disabilities are a result from society’s understanding of a person’s impairment or level of functioning. Adults with developmental delays have atypical experiences due to their interaction or lack thereof with their environment. Institutionalized discrimination or negative myths can prevent not only the person or consumer from achieving their goals, but large groups that are similarly labeled may face the same issue.

Furthermore, I will discuss of the organization accountability to their services, overall impact, and the power in organization. Lastly, I will explanatory the workers role in the organizations and discuss of my overall experience referring to my future social work profession.
Choosing to pursue this education to become a Social Service Worker has been a life long passion; living a so called “roller coaster” of a life and being subjected to many things, enjoyable and regretful has helped me in many ways to comprehend what it is to truly have human empathy and compassion for others. A veteran at life in its lowest and highest forms, and feeling completely alone and hopeless at times; being subjected to sexual and physical abuse, seeing what alcohol and drugs do to families, how poverty effects children and loved ones. Fortunately there were a few individuals that reached out, bring me up out of the darkness. This is something that I feel in my heart that needs to be given back, for me to provide someone the empowerment that others have given me, to show that there is hope and give reason to keep going, individuals who feel desperate, help to raise their chances, dreams and the basic needs of life. Having the knowledge of education to give these resources for expert referrals to assist people in desperate times, so they can live the life that is deserving and fulfilling to them, therefore this is my ultimate goal!
Social work is a recognised profession with its own code of ethics and professional standards. It is a complex profession, and social workers have to have a sound knowledge base combined with the skills to carry out their tasks effectively and professionally. The process of developing professional capacity, capabilities and expertise, is an essential, crucial and ongoing part of the social work profession. The College of Social Work created the Professional capability framework (PCF) for the purpose of education and professional development. The nine domains signify various aspects of being a competent social worker. The PCF sets out the stages and the level of knowledge required for social workers as they progress from students to more
I interviewed Kim, a LICSW working in private practice in Providence along with her two brothers. She takes on a person-centered approach to her therapy and is very focused on helping her clients achieve their goals, whether it be overcoming grief or dealing with a large adjustment in their lives. Kim certainly appears to be running a very successful practice and by being able to speak to her directly, I learned much more about the social work field.
other people. One with a degree in social work can find a job in almost any field. Social workers can work in hospitals, clinics, schools, child welfare and human services agencies, settlement houses, and community development corporations. By pursuing the social work career will open doors to many different job environments. I am mostly interested in how social workers work in schools, hospitals, or settlement houses. Serving people in need is the main goal of a social worker and this is exactly why I chose this career. I know that a social worker is required to identify people who need help in a specific type of service. A social worker has to work with someone and should be able to assess the person’s needs, the situation that the person
With its original intentions of enforcing punishment for weapons, drugs, and severe violent incidents, zero tolerance has evolved to a very critical policy that arguably pushes more minority boys out of school and into the criminal justice system. As many refuse to try to connect present day issues of race within law enforcement, this issue is a pressing issue for the social work profession. Battling against a social injustice issue as such, that presents with so many disproportionate, becomes difficult in working with youth in Ward 7. To hear the youth say, “Why does any of this matter, when I walk outside my door and can be arrested or killed in a day by an officer?” are saddened concepts and theories to work against. In areas where poverty is so prevalent, national mainstream news that flicker across your news screen here and there, are constant realities. To be progressive in treatment one day, but the next day a kid is arrested because he was late to school and the administration would not let him into the building, kills the mindset of success of anyone. A constant barrier most time diminishes a dream.
There is many information that is important to the public, but most people are not aware of. For example, the fringe economy. Being a social worker will give me a great opportunity to reach out and educate people, especially low-income families and immigrants who needs urgent rescue from the fringe company. High interest rate and money management are some of the information that might help.
Not only did she dedicate her time and effort in trying to access enough resources; she reached out to Veterans Affairs in possibility of spousal and dependent support. We went to Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM Fort Lewis) Veterans Affairs Beneficiary processing facility to file Spousal/Dependency compensation. It’s a 6-9-month process. Past experiences instilled in me furthered my rooted desire to become a social worker. With everything happening; father’s passing; eviction notice; zero income was a major concern. The social worker helped me realize that we need to move on even without my father’s presence. Of course, she honored and respected the time of his mourning, but that didn’t stop her from acknowledging how proud and gratified my
The reason why I am motivated to pursue a professional career in social and human services work is because I believe it is the greatest achievement that I would ever accomplish. It would make me proud to know that I am providing support; protection and safety to people that are in need. “A powerful motive for pursuing social or human service work is personal experience” (Chenoweth & McAuliffe, 2015, p. 10). This relates to my own personal experience for example when I was growing up I experienced many abuse such as bullying and domestic violence. My own mother was abused by my father and she did not have
My vision of the social work field is being able to help people in need and being the person that people can look back on and remember as a huge help in time of need. I think my core values and beliefs will help me be an effective social worker and help me succeed in this field. It is in my belief that a person should never be knocked down when they are going through hardships, and rather empowering them. I also believe that not everyone could be a social worker because it takes a certain kind of empathetic and self-aware person. I truly believe that my upbringing has humbled me to understand and not be judgmental of people’s issues since I’ve seen a lot in my short twenty-one years.
Choosing a career path is the most significant decision one will make in their lifetime. In order to aid me in my selection, I have chosen to do research on vocations that interest me. While selecting an occupation to study, a few jobs caught my attention, such as a substance abuse counselor or a mental health counselor. Yet, after additional research, I decided to pursue the career path of a social worker, There are a few topics within the life of a social worker that I desired information about, from the education and training required, and the work environment, to the responsibilities, income range, and job outlook. After nearly a month of research, I can conclude that a social worker may be a plausible occupation for my future.
It is my mantra that getting the opportunity to serve people in any capacity is a privilege that holds so much value and importance. To think about political leaders, extending themselves to solicit the mandate to serve, reiterates the notion that I hold about service to humanity. Everything we are doing as individuals and groups basically, are to make life better and easier for the people around us, what I term “a village community”. My parents, siblings, church, schools and other institutions have served me throughout my life, therefore I felt the onus at a younger age to also reciprocate. In effect, to broaden my understanding of people’s behaviors in order to better serve them, I studied Sociology & Social Work. The sociological knowledge provided the foundation for researching into societal problems and its effects on people; studying social work further proffered the fundamentals in identifying variety of resources that could solve these social problems. I had the opportunity to work as a peer counselor, where I helped colleague students navigate through the problems they faced on and off the college campus, especially their economic and mental health needs. After school, in Ghana, I travelled to the United States where I started off as a mental health counselor at Lahey Health Behavioral services. After working with mentally ill clients for a year, I pursued further studies in social work at Salem State University. I have been working with Lahey ever since as a
Social workers are in a distinctive position as they are able to educate, counsel and empower patients and their families, and are often the only professionals that are involved with patients and their families from beginning to end (Nicholson and Matross, 1989). The most effective method to pain relieve is through a multidisciplinary approach, and if a patient is under-treated or experiencing unnecessary pain, that signifies a failure of the multidisciplinary team, including the social worker (Glajchen, Blum and Calder, 1995). On the multidisciplinary team, the social worker is the expert in facilitating communication between the patient, families and the rest of the health care team (Stein, 2004), and are expected to be the catalyst amongst the interdisciplinary team by promoting the interactions amongst the team (Day, 2012). As part of the pursuit for social justice value within the CASW Code of Ethics (2005), it is pivotal for the social worker to be proactive in identifying marginalized populations that may receive differential care (Mendenhall, 2003).
