In today’s fast-paced, computer based society, everything seems to move at the speed of light. Text messages are exchanged in a matter of minutes, emails bring together corporate mergers, phone calls deliver life changing news; it’s nearly impossible to begin to differentiate between what is “high-tech” and what is just a part of everyday life. We have also developed a comfort in knowing things are constantly evolving. Technology is in a constant state of growth and becoming better and with technological developments comes the evolution of our own lifestyles as they continue to be laden with ease. In today’s age medicine doesn’t just cure illnesses but goes into the root of the pathology and work to diminish it as well, unstoppable viruses and diseases are being stopped thanks to technological advancements. Technology is so much more than teenagers with their eyes glazed over watching six second videos, technology is what is currently sustaining the human species. What began as an underground revolution in biology and technology is slowly becoming discovered and to the public’s surprise, accepted. This philosophy and lifestyle known as biohacking has its roots in the belief that in order to maintain humanity, we too must be ready to evolve with technology and not so much nature. Pioneers of this DIY-biology are known as Transhumanists, their beliefs can be constituted as “Humanity stands to be profoundly affected by science and technology in the future. We envision the possibility of broadening human potential by overcoming aging, cognitive shortcomings, involuntary suffering, and our confinement to planet Earth.” (Humanity+, 2010) The reality of the near future including a healthy dose of cyborgs is enough for any tech-conservatives to jump ship, yet before that happens there have been various successes within this up and coming field.
