While some may argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because there was new inventions, the Industrial Revolution had actually negative outcomes on society. The negative effects of Industrialization included pollution, poverty, and unfortunate conditions inside the home and inside factories. These factors would impact the lives of immigrants and overall change the way we view society and prevent future outbreaks. And although the people living in this period did not know it yet, the new innovations being invented would change the world for the worse.

Some of the negative effects of Industrialization seen near the end of the 19th century and 20th century can still be seen today.  Urbanization led to overcrowding of the cities which then led to health problems and poor living conditions.  Cities all around the world today are still having this issue and it’s becoming more evident due to the number of citizens in poverty.  Work in factories was extremely dangerous and dirty.  Although many factories today appear to be clean and safe, behind the scenes they may not be.  A major negative effect of Industrialization was World War 1.  Because of Industrialization, countries were able to gain power and take over countries with lesser power.  The improved war technologies killed more efficiently, faster, and on a larger scale leading to a large amount of injuries and casualties.  The injuries and casualties would have been much less without the advancement of weapons.

The Industrial Revolution in Britain led to many social changes for the country as well as its people. Prior to the revolution, many people, especially of the lower class in terms of wealth, lived in the countryside where they worked fields to feed their own families. After the Industrial Revolution began, however, this all changed as the demand for more and more goods became abundant, and a method of increasing the supply was needed. Factories would be built in towns by the upper class business owners, and peasants would move into these towns to work in the factories. Small factory towns would later become factory cities, and most of the citizens of these cities were the people that worked in the factories. The living conditions in these cities were horrendous, and the working conditions were terrible as well. People of all ages worked in the factories, and some children as young as six would work twelve to sixteen hours – and sometimes more – each day. Life during the Industrial Revolution was tough, but there were some positives as well.

From social to economics, then on to the political view it had its up and downs. From having the cruel child labor in factories. To inventions like the telephone that we still have today.

The Industrial Revolution changed the ways by how the world produced its goods. It was the era when the use of power-driven machines was developed. It also changed our societies from a mainly agricultural society to one in which industry and manufacturing was in control. This had many effects on people’s lives.

Though many people know that the working conditions were not particularly great, not all factories were hard on the workers. In an excerpt from a letter written by a young girl working in a textile factory in Lowell, Massachusetts it is stated that she has sufficient food and a good place to sleep. Mary Paul clearly states, to her father, that she enjoys where she works. “I think that the factory is the best place for me and if any girl wants employment, I advise them to come to Lowell.” (Paul, 1846) She says she likes where she works and she likes her boss. This just shows that not all conditions were bad. Some, as a matter of fact, were very good. These good conditions set a basis for other factory workers to compare their working conditions to.
