Imagine being the richest man in the world. Having the most power in your whole country and being able to raise and lower the prices of products whenever you want. Most people don’t get the privileges of being like that but i'm going to tell you about the four captains of industry that did get these privileges. Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish American who was born in Dunfermline. Carnegie immigrated to the United States when he was just 13 years old he settled in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Carnegie started worked in a cotton factory at a very young age. After that he rose to a the position of division superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1859. His first job was being a book keeper at the age of 16. Rockefeller was an oil tycoon and also discovered gasoline and kerosene. Rockefeller was a very intelligent man he monopolized the oil industry by using both vertical and horizontal integration. John had partners that invested with him on a smaller oil corporation but greed got the best of him so he borrowed money and bought out his partners so he could control everything. On 1870 Rockefeller started the largest corporation of oil along which was called “ Standard Oil. “ Rockefeller controlled 80% of all the oil in the world. With owning an oil company that's when he discovered gasoline was worth lots and lots of money so he invested in that to and made many gas stations. At one point in history Rockefeller controlled every gas station in the U.S. With him buying out every other oil company Rockefeller was the only one that could produce gas and oil so he had the power to raise and lower the price of gas and oil whenever he felt like it. Rockefeller was probably the most powerful man at this time and the government started noticing that. The U.S. supreme court found Standard Oil in violation of antitrust laws and order him to dissolve his companies.
