The automobile has become one of the most important parts of daily life. Life as we know it would be altered without them. Without cars the simplest trips would take longer. Cars make life easier. Automobiles have improved throughout history and continue to improve as time goes on.
The invention of the automobile cannot be credited to just one man or woman. “. It is estimated that over 100,000 patents created the modern automobile.” (inventors.about.com). In the later 1700s, Engineers began to experimenting with motor power vehicles. In 1769, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot, a mechanic and engineer from France, invented the first road vehicle that was propelled by its self. “Steam engines powered cars by burning fuel that heated water in a boiler, creating steam that expanded and pushed pistons that turned the crankshaft, which then turned the wheels”(inventors.about.com). Steam engines were very heavy so it was a bad design for road vehicles. It was powered by a steam engine and it could move at the very slow speed of 2 and half miles per hour. It only had three wheels and it had to stop every fifteen minutes to build up enough steam to keep on moving. The French Army used it to carry their weaponry. Cugnot drove his vehicle into a stone wall in 1771 which made him the first person to get into an accident with a motor vehicle (inventors.about.com).
