The Portare was a new piece of technology, used to transport cargo long distances, and people, albeit it was not reliable. The farthest a human ever reached using a Portare was a mere mile. Young engineer Finian Inovus believed he could improve the device to be fit for travel. For days, nights, and weeks, Finian worked on his project, and soon enough, he had done what had yet to be achieved. Under normal circumstances, he would have ran to the nearest technological master, or teleported, to show off his new breakthrough, but he had to be sure the device would always work. There was not a soul around his empty room; only the ticks of gears, the clash of tools on metal, and the flipping of research papers kept him company. Finian …show more content…
The atlas contained the coordinates to just about every major city, including his, the city of Socius. Once he found the coordinates to Archit, he wrote down the code. He grabbed the piece of paper and rose to his feet, satisfied with his findings. He went to his second desk, which laid next to his bookshelf and tool rack. Finian dug into the small bag of tools on his thigh, and pulled out the small piece of metal with wood at the end, carved in that wood was his initials. A key was necessary to adjust a Portare. A small wicker box held Finian’s modified Portare, which he reached for. He pulled up his sleeve to strap on the watch-like device onto his left wrist. Finian inserted the key into the first nook, and with careful turns, he watched the numbers match what he had written on the paper, which he placed inside his tool bag along with the key. Before pressing the final button- which would send him to his destination, Finian went over all of the speeches he had planned in his head. He glanced one final time at the mess which was his room, and felt accomplished about what he had achieved. Never had he felt so proud before. Finian took a step back and smiled at the portrait of him and his family when he pushed the button. The world around him spun, faster, and faster, until the only thing he saw was the black abyss, and
At that time, I felt like a rookie sky diver preparing for his first plunge. The cabin door opens to reveal the extreme distance of his fall, which leads to either sheer excitement or eventual death. The naivete that sheltered his fear disappears at the sudden reality of the moment. By then, of course, it is much too late to turn back. The very thought that this was his idea seems absurd to him, and he feels like the only person on the face of the planet. And so he closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, and
After becoming drunk and standing at the edge of the cliff, looking down at his possible death, he comes out of his drunken disillusionment like a cork in a bucket of milk, and vows to start anew.
She told the boys, “You boys did a fine job; your father would be proud of you- I’m proud of you.” And she was proud of them. She could see that they too, were proud of their accomplishment.
As the distance between him and the earth lessened, he became overwhelmed as he tried to think of all the people in his life he’d never see again: his fiancée, his mother and father, his brother whom he hadn’t spoken to in over three years. A lump of sadness burned his throat at this, but was quickly overshadowed by the looping image of seeing himself smash into the earth. He was also aware that he’d wet himself.
Maybe four or five is his guest... There is that slight dank smell that all big empty old houses have that haven't had a good dusting or the introduction of human scent... The place is amazingly clean to have been abandoned for so long... Lest work he'll have to do... He slowly begins an inspective march through the bottom floors, passing the grand piano, looking sideways at the keys as his feet continues on to the next room... A parlor or such... Maybe a dinning room... Yep... A china cabinet still stocked... He won't be needing much.... He enters now a smaller room, sunk a few steps lower than the main floor... This was someone's study... A big writing desk, book shelves stocked with a variety of subjects, but mostly music and art.... He deduces that the last occupant was the owner of the German grand piano in the first room... The last and final occupant... He couldn't see how anyone else after him would have the same tastes as to keep everything as it was... He was pretty sure it was a him, and not a her; and despite the great size of the place, it was not a family either.... This was a single man's
He prepared, he persevered. He worked everyday and set his goals every day no matter how tough it got so when his opportunity came, he was ready.”
Where the colorless tiles ended, a dark carpeting started. He looked further right, to the wall beyond the flooring, seeing the silhouettes of several stacks of boxes and metal racks used to hold clothing. From there, he looked ahead the thirty-foot space to the far wall, the view showing him empty floor space from where he stood, its emptiness ending at the building’s right wall.
My mind raced like the race car, my heart beats as the hooves of a horse on a racetrack, and my thick eyelashes holding up the tears that were going to fall. As I locked eyes with the Monster, I knew that I wasn’t safe. The angry blue eyes like the ocean waves were locked in with my helpless black ones. This time, the ocean waves were set to destroy a ship. This time, that helpless ship was me.
I walked to the end of the line and halted. I knew I had finished. All my preparing resulted for these few minutes riding. I felt good about my ride, but now I must
The great man tinkered with his little motor. He worked in an eerie silence. The echoes of metallic tools reverberated through the area. The workshop was very spacious, a large opened room with several cluttered work desk scattered about the area. Loose pages littered the tile floor, stretching from wall to wall; illustrated with the man's genius rantings.
Many helpful and life changing items were invented during the 1700’s. Did you know the first automobile was invented in 1700? There were many important inventions made in the 1700s. Where did I put my keys? .. I know I had to set them down somewhere… Oh! I remember I set them on the table, silly me.
So he crossed the Rubicon. He would have to go back to the Hotel and check out but then he would go up the coast highway. Carefully, he fingered the black leather gloves, pulling them on each finger and the mask down and over his head. He reached behind
Then he looked at the town. People running, destruction, then everyone was gone. He fell again, this time; he landed in a memory, a great war between humans and the other creatures, although he did not truly remember it. He realized that blowing up the ship of the aliens had caused a war and that everyone on Makulu was dead, and for the first time he cried. Then he fell again, this time to a spot in which he had never been before. It was a planet. As he walked around he realized where he was, it was the home planet of the creature that killed his parents, they were all dead. He grew sad, he was in a dimension where nobody knew him, nobody could see him and he had killed millions. Then everything went
Falling. He was falling. Shay, ex-resident of “space”, was falling into the abyss, presumably to his death. A giant, robotic hand reached out to catch him, but missed. He was vaguely aware of his parents calling his name, yelling out to him, and yet he couldn’t tell. Everything had this haze about it-- as if it were all a dream. Things became darker until he couldn’t see. Darkness enveloped him down in the gorge.
