As Americans, we have the commonality of segregating those abnormal to the general public. This includes those of another race, lower income, and/or has a disability. Mentally disabled children of America have endured the isolation of other “average” Americans. With no understanding of being considered different, they were lowered in dignity and repelled by fellow citizens. In earlier year, mentally handicapped children were despised and ridiculed for being disabled; now with greater understanding, they are slowly being accepted as normal Americans. Small steps like new treatments, education, and creating more tolerant environments have helped mentally disabled children feel more included as a society.
There are many types of mental disabilities.
Throughout the ages, people with disabilities have been hidden away at homes or institutions and were often not educated. This was common practice and as such, when the education system was designed, children with disabilities were not even considered. Then, starting soon after the civil rights movement in the 50’s, a series of lawsuits was brought against school boards and the federal government took notice. Then the Education for all Handicapped Children Act of 1975 was passed and these children were finally allowed the education they deserved. As time went
People with disabilities have not been treated fairly in the past. I believe that that those with disabilities have been treated worse than the elderly. They were not allowed to go to school with the normal kids; they were not allowed to work at most jobs. They were teased and made fun of, sometimes there were rejected by their own families. When they were in the mental hospitals they were treated very harsh, they sometimes had to go through shock therapy. Even though they are different types of disabilities, if was something that was noticeable you were treated different, as if you did not belong.
Most of society does not see the challenges that people with disabilities go through. I also think that if the world had more resources for those with disabilities we could erase prejudice. For example, more hospitals should provide an ASL interpreter for the patients who cannot understand what the doctors are saying and can’t express their issues to their doctors. All in all, society just needs a better understanding of what people with disabilities go through on a day to day basis.
There are many stereotypes regarding those with intellectual disabilities. This may be because these individuals range in cognitive ability, receptive and expressive language, and physical need. While it may be assumed that those with disabilities are not able to process the world around them, they are not immune to mental health disorders and the, sometimes tragic, events that take place throughout a lifetime. Someone without an intellectual disability may find solace in a friend, partner, or family member. If the event is impactful enough, they may even turn to a mental health professional that is trained to help those going through a tough time. Unfortunately, individuals with disabilities do not always have that same network of support.
The purpose of this work is to inform the public about what it is really like for people with disabilities both inside and outside the United States. For example he talks about how during research that the Human Rights Watch conducted, they “found that some school administrators refuse to admit children with disabilities because they believe these children are unable to learn, unsafe around other children, or engage in disruptive behavior” which is a harsh reality for disabled kids around the world because they are seen as inept, or unable to do the same as the kids without disabilities.
People with special needs are not always included as a normal citizen as they should be in other countries, more so the middle East. Many of these special needs people are confined to their homes with little or no contact with the outisde world. However, in America equal opportunites such as education and jobs are provided for these people despite their disabilities. Also, in the USA help is provided for those people with disabilities all over the place, wheel chair ramps for the handicap and brail writting for the blind these are all things that help make everyone in America feel equal despite a disability or a handicap.
Today’s society is different in its thinking when dealing with people with disabilities. There had to be many changes made in its labeling, and approach when dealing with people who may have physical/mental differences. The ostracize behavior that people were known to disturb in society has changed a great deal, due to the many federal laws that have been put in place to insure the well-being of people that have disabilities. In 1972, one very well-known case is Mill vs Board of Education of the District of Columbia this case address how the constituted rights of students were not being meet by not providing them with a public education.” Many disabled children had been excluded from public education prior to 1975,24 Congress, through the Act, sought initially to set up a process by which states would find children in need of educational services and bring them into the system”(Kotler, p.491,2014).
The world as we know it has had many issues that has affected the lives of many people in our community. Some of these issues produce a negative response or unfair opportunities for the people with these issues. One type of issue that can be affected negatively in our community is child disabilities or any disabilities in general for that matter. The life of a person with disabilities could be a huge issue if the community keeps responding the way they have been responding.
There comes a time in every child’s life when they become aware of who they are and question their place in the world, this is no different for a child with a disability. Most important is that every child has a safe environment to be able to express themselves without receiving judgement from adults.
Who is to say what “Normal” is? I am saddened by the travesties of our past leaders and how people with disabilities were treated. Ignorance is something that keeps up from making informed, educated decisions and this is apparent in the way society treated those that were thought of as less than perfect. Although disabilities are an illness, they are no less significant than diabetes or cancer. In in countless cases, they are just as serious, individuals with mental disabilities need medical attention, just like the previous illnesses mentioned, in addition to somebody to listen to them. Diagnosis is a crucial part of getting the correct treatment and several times as discussed in Chapter 5 of The Social Work Experience, An Introduction
The devolvement of social isolation in children with autism. This has become a very open topic in thus new age society, living in a generation that everything has to be given or made available right here and right now. Knowing that this new generation is all about social acceptance we often have to take the time to ask the question, where does the children with disabilities fit in this social media raven? How do we as their peers make them feel accepted? It is most evident that we as people frown down upon people that may be different from what we are used to seeing. Autism is a mental disorder that include limited social abilities and highly patterned behavior. Just knowing that little piece of information we can or will make our own assumption that people with autism are not capable of talking, playing or even learning the things that a normal peer their age would or could learn.

There should be a way that these children identify themselves and their existence in the society should be embraced as it represents creative diversity. Parents and the community at large should handle these souls with care and love that is true to the heart. Their daily living should be made easier to the extent that the family and community members can since it is not their choice that they do not walk, speak, and hear and so on. Furthermore, anybody can find themselves in such situations of special needs.
Language: It can be used to start wars, and to say the words, “I love you”. Language is incredibly important to how we are as people because it is the major medium of social interactions. Many features in how we are as people, are socially determined; therefore, social interaction is the foundation of personality, and social interactions happen primarily through the exchange of understood words- language. As seen in Anna’s case, studies of isolated children have shown that depriving children of human contact has detrimental effects on their mind, personality, and physicality. Without language, we cannot derive thoughts, feelings, and ideas from external features and people. “That her isolation did have a profound effect upon her mentality,
Over the years, perceptions towards disability have been significantly changing as result of the long pathway the disable community has taken fighting for Civil Rights, inclusion and against discrimination. Unfortunately, this last one has not been totally accomplished yet. Barriers to social integration still exist in the society. Perhaps the greatest barrier is not the disability itself; is the attitude of people.
