What do you know about the Catholic Church’s teachings about homosexuality? Now, is that The topic of homosexuality and what the Church teaches about it has been a very controversial issue. There are many misconceptions about this topic that has begun to spread throughout our society, as more individuals have gathered the courage to come out as homosexual. The Church, nor science, knows why homosexuals are inclined to like who they like. Whether it be a genetic gene or an experience the child had, homosexuals should be treated with respect. As previously said, they are humans. They are people just like you and me. While some people might not agree with their “behavior.” This disputed issue has sparked the interest in many to actually find out …show more content…
First and foremost, homosexuals are human just like us. They are people who have a calling in life; God put them on Earth with a mission just like he does with everyone else. The Church welcomes homosexuals to the Church as long as they do not act upon their desires. What does this mean? Well we have passing thoughts about actions that are would not be morally right; whether they be heterosexual desires, or wanting to hurt someone. We, for the most part, do not act on these thoughts and they quickly leave our mind. The same thing goes for homosexuals; they are allowed into the Church as long as they live a life of chastity. “Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection,” (CCC 2357-2359). The Church teaches that homosexuals should be accepted with respect and compassion, which is where many Catholics go wrong. “Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s cross the difficulties that they may encounter from their condition.” The Church does not teach us to go around hating on
An understanding of what are this crisis repercussion in society, especially in victims, is important to find a solution for the issue. Even though the society largely has focused on finding a culprit the focus should not be to blame, which seems to be the main point of the media, the common gold is to find the solution to the problem and to avoid the child abuse to continue spreading in today's church. Despite, this situation should be a call to the Catholic Church for reflection, and to reevaluate their law and structure. What everybody wants is the children to be safe. Comparatively, although many of the allegations are up to twenty or thirty years ago, according to a chronology published in the article “Crisis in the Catholic Church”, still
Throughout history, gay people have been discriminated by religious groups on a global scale. In the Room for Debate article “Have Christians Created a Harmful Atmosphere for Gays,” the issue being discussed refers to how poorly Christians discriminate against homosexuality. This Room for Debate article is mainly referring to Evangelical Christians, who are the main contributors to discrimination against homosexuality. Despite being taught to “love one another as Jesus has loved us,” there are still a majority of Evangelical Christians who preach Leviticus, the book in the Bible that condemns gay people. While a great majority of Christians condemn homosexuality, there’s also a minority of Christians that feel that homosexuality is an acceptable behavior. The statistics of Christians that oppose gay marriage versus Christians who support it vary between each Christian denomination. However, a religion’s set of beliefs are defined by generally running true for a majority of believers. There may be a minority of Evangelical Christians who support gay marriage, but many more Evangelical Christians oppose gay marriage. As a result of this majority, Christians have created a negative environment for gay people by denying homosexuality as an ethically accepted behavior, pressuring gays not to be themselves, and threatening them with eternal damnation.
The topic of homosexuality in religion has many sides. There are those who believe that it is a sin in God’s eyes and according to the Bible, and there are those who believe the God and the Bible are not specific to homosexuals. It is a tough debate based on whether you are a religious person, how you were raised, and where your morals and ethics stand. You cannot truly believe one way without taking into account the other side and have valid proof to back it up.
The Catholic Church should accept that gay marriage is morally acceptable and doesn’t contradict their beliefs. Gay marriage has been a topic of controversy ever since the 1970’s. May of 1970 to be exact. Around This time two men named Richard John 'Jack ' Baker and James Michael McConnell in Minnesota applied to Hennepin County District Court clerk Gerald Nelson for a marriage license. They were denied because they both were men. This issue of two people of the same sex getting married is still a topic of debate to a lot of people even after the U.S. Supreme court made gay marriage legal in all 50 states in 20151. The Catholic Church teaches to treat homosexuals with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. That every act of hate, violence, and persecution toward them is condemned. The Church doesn’t view homosexuals no poorly than they do everyone else but it is their views on marriage that are in question. They believe that all sexual activity outside of marriage as a sin and an immoral act. So, if we restrict marriage from homosexuals then if they are in a sexual relationship with another they are in turn an immoral person. Therefore, the Catholic Church should view gay marriage the same as heterosexual marriage, with reverence and sanctity.
“US Bishops oppose Employment non-discrimination Act; Say it punishes disapproval of conduct; three chairmen of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have criticized the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered; backed Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) of 2013, which was passed on Thursday by the United Senate, arguing that it punishes those who show a disapproval of same-sex sexual conduct. “Our dignity as children of God extends to our sexuality. Being a male or a female is a reality which ‘is good and willed by God,’ and this complementarity is essential for the great good of marriage as the union of one man and one woman (CCC, no. 339). Sexual acts outside of marriage serve neither of these goods nor the good of the
In recent years, the issue of homosexuality has been a controversial and frequently discussed topic within the Anglican tradition. The Lambeth conference is an assembly of bishops of the Anglican Communion and is convened by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The conference allows for a collaborative and consultation function which allows for relevant issues to be discussed within the communion (“Lambeth Conferences”). The argument over homosexuality was discussed predominately as a communion wide issue at the 1998 Lambeth conference, and it was concluded that homosexual practice was “incompatible with scripture” (“Lambeth Conferences”). Whether locally or globally, debates typically arise around the issue of homosexuality, and if should be
Over the years in America life has tremendously changed in this society as homosexuality is becoming a more controversial topic to many . In this past decade, this topic has sprung to the top of religious and political debates . Homosexuality has led to a debate of social matter, however when it comes to laws to protect homosexuals' rights, and equal right that other Americans have society turns its nose up in disgust. The individuals of today fear a world of change and are stuck in their "old ways". I'm here to say that it is time for a change. The lesbians, gays, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community should have the same rights as other American.
Many LGBT people don’t accept their call of accepting their sexuality and living their lives simply because they are pressured or feel that they must adhere to the strict sexual regulations concerning the human sexuality as found in the bible. To illustrate this point, in 1 Timothy, a letter written by the Apostle Paul who was converted from judaism, wrote to his pupil Timothy that the old law of Moses was intended for the “sexually immoral people and practicing homosexuals” (1Tim 1:9-11) which has lead many future christians to believe that homosexual people are immoral and transgress against God since the law was intended to point out the flaws of man and regulate their lives in order for them to live in harmony with God and dwell in his presence in the
It seems like there has been some kind of renewal in the Catholic Church ever since Argentina’s Bishop, Father Francis became the new Pope. This is especially evident with the Church’s stance on homosexuality. Although there has not been any major changes between Pope Francis’s stance on homosexuality and Pope Benedict XVI’s, the press has defined the former as the “good” Pope and the latter as the “bad” one. Therefore, many of the world’s approximately one billion Catholics think that Pope Francis is insane for taking such a liberal stance in the Church and opening the Catholic community to these supposed sinners. Ever since its conception, the Catholic Church has taken a bellicose stance against gays. They
My thoughts on this event are that when the Pope’s final decision comes out to the public, there will be a lot of controversy and debate. If I had to make a decision, I would chose to allow divorced Catholics to receive Communion, but however, not allow gay marriage or them having Communion. On the other hand, I would allow gay people and couples to attend church because I think listening to the teachings/sayings in the Bible is the right and privilege that everyone should have. Even though my stringent decision excludes some families, I think it supports the welfare of the majority. There are still approximately 79 countries where homosexuality is illegal. In addition, even though homosexuality was legalized this June in the USA, it doesn’t
“Why do you hate gays?” people ask. “I don’t hate them, neither do I like them,” I reply, “gay is simply wrong and that’s final.” With a topic like this, you find much controversy. You can backup your information with the Bible, but what about Atheists or those of different religions. Homosexuality is not okay because it’s biblically wrong, parents that who practice homosexuality leave a negative effect on children, and children lack fatherhood or motherhood when raised in a homosexuality household.
It continues to amaze me that even in the 21st century the church continues to be major focus in the discrimination homophobia. The church seems not to learn from our history. During the years and post years of the slavery of African Americans, the mistreatment, abuse and murder of black people was supported by the Bible and even condoned as acceptable behaviors. But as we now know, that neither God nor the Bible supports hatred or mistreatment of another human being as we are all children of Christ and we are to love one another and treat each other as we ourselves want to be treated.
Nevertheless, Pope Francis has been lauded for demonstrating a more compassionate attitude towards the gay and transgender community. Despite his stance on sexuality, the pontiff has repeatedly urged Christians to welcome gays into the church if they seek God instead of ostracizing
In the meantime, Pope Francis continues to object to accepting same sex marriage, but tolerates homosexuality by claiming we “should not be discriminated against,” and we should not “judge them” for their actions (McElwee). As the voice of God, I believe the Pope should object to any sin to include: homosexuality, murder, rape, slavery, pedophilic, sexual immorality, or marriage between homosexuals, but he takes a laid back approach. Certainly, I understand his intent to bring a larger group of sinners towards God, and Jesus also took this approach, but spoke against those same sins we face today. Throughout history, many cultures have remained very open, about shameful pleasures of the flesh, and many failed in the bible with these same pleasures.
Opposition to gay marriage has increased since the summer and a narrow majority of Americans also oppose allowing gays and lesbians to enter legal agreements that fall short of marriage. Moreover, despite the overall rise in tolerance toward gays since the 1980s, many Americans remain highly critical of homosexuals and religious belief is a major factor in these attitudes.
