Analyse the key beliefs of a religious and secular world view in relation to ultimate questions – Taylor Murfitt.
In this report I will be both contrasting and comparing the religious view of Catholicism and the world view of Secular Humanism. The three questions I will be analysing through the religious view of Catholicism and the world view Secular Humanism include:
• Is there a higher being?
• What is the purpose of my life?
• Is there a right way to treat people?
These three questions are very much conflicting worldwide and many philosophical discussions have been debated for years, however with many different views on the world, not everyone on Earth has the same answer to these. This may be due to different upbringings through youth, values, and overall beliefs, including Catholicism and Secular Humanism. Within this report there is no aim of finding the truth or the actual answer, it is simply an analysis of people’s personal beliefs to these questions. I am going to include others opinions including my own interviewee’s (would like to be kept anonymous) thoughts and beliefs throughout the report, including my own, and opinions I have researched to further analyse opinions of different groups that can support these worldviews.
A brief description of the religious view Catholicism: A denomination of Christianity. I have decided to specifically narrow my world religion view to Catholicism, which is one of the main and largely practiced branches of Christianity.
In this assignment you will summarize and analyze the essential elements of the Christian worldview and reflect on implications for your own worldview.
Secular humanist believe the starting point of life is nothing breathtaking. The Human life is a result of a great many years of advancement that can be explained through the theory of evolution. There is no god who made life, and that religion is nothing more than the fears of mankind. Secular humanist utilize science, intelligence, and individual feelings as the answer for life’s most troublesome questions.
When it comes to viewing the world, there are many different ways to do so. Astonishingly, there is an abundance of ways to view the world and the existing power that dwell within it. Everyone develops their own view of the world, sometimes agreeing with other worldviews, and sometimes disagreeing. Having different worldviews causes people to interpret the world differently. According to the theistic worldview, God is the ultimate reality, but “Enuma Elish,” and “The Epic of Gilgamesh,” depicts that other deities maintain absolute power. Though an innumerable amount of world views exists, the Theistic worldview ranks superior.
A worldview is the way a person views and interprets the world around them. Life experiences and spiritual influences play a part in forming one’s worldview. A person’s worldview helps them to determine beliefs on creation, humanity, morals and what happens after death. According to Waddell, (2014) “Worldviews are also like lenses found in eyeglasses that serve as the means through which a person sees the world.” (para. 43) In this paper, the main components of the Christian worldview will be discussed, to include God, humanity, Jesus, restoration and analysis of Christian Faith as well as a reflection of my own beliefs.
Our worldview allows us to see into the world at such an angle that it coincides with our beliefs, therefore affecting how we think and live. Whether one falls under an atheistic, pantheistic, or theistic worldview, they are guided in their life choices depending on the beliefs of their worldview. Throughout this paper, I will summarize the elements of a Christian Worldview such as God, Humanity, Jesus, and Restoration; I will then analyze questions one might have about the Christian Worldview, and finally I will reflect on my worldview.
What are the biggest differences between a secular and a Christian worldview? Why is this an important question for this particular study of the Old Testament?
There are many questions that define a worldview. Christianity and Islam are just two religions that tackle these questions and have formed their worldview based on scriptures and, to a certain extent, life experiences. The question often regarded as least thought-provoking within the whole grand scheme of a worldview is “What is a human being?” The answer to this question seems so evident to many. However, by identifying the true essence of who humans really are, will impact
The Roman Catholic Church is presented as an institution of knowledge and power, influencing the lives of the people. The clear boundaries in catholic society are presented here, by the “right and wrong”, indicating that there was little variation in beliefs and practice in those following Catholicism. However, even though religion is presented as an important part of life, determining people’s decisions and behaviour, it is also presented as something which is taught, rather than followed willingly, indicating that while children, such as Frank, may have no wish to become “good Catholics”, they were forced to do so by society; their parents and teachers. Frank presents the attitude towards religion in school through the following quote, telling the children to: “Know and remember all the questions and answers in catechism, became good Catholics, to know the difference between right and wrong, to die for the Faith if called on”
Whether clearly defined or not, everyone holds a worldview. Through life, travel, study, and contemplation, I have sought to clarify and substantiate my worldview. When comparing my beliefs to various other worldviews, mine stands up as logical and rational. Most importantly, my Christian worldview can be applied to contemporary problems and even explain many of the world’s issues. Though the Christian worldview is one of the most criticized, it provides substantive answers instead of more philosophical questions. After all, a worldview is only worthwhile if one can explain and defend their beliefs.
In this critical response, I will go over the three consequences regarding secular – religious binary that the author addresses in this chapter. In the examination of world politics in association to secular – religious binary, three consequences were mentioned by the author that I found quite thought – provoking. The first consequence being that many social scientists are being trained to ignore religion and conduct their research and demonstrate their findings on the basis of only the “secular”. The next consequence mentioned was that the study of religion has a tendency to focus on presumed religious practices in addition to religion and secularism.
Both Judaism and Catholicism shape the moral system of values as basic religious systems on a world-wide scale. As they are focused on roughly the same beliefs looked at from different angles, the main focus of this study is on similarities and differences between the two systems.
3a. O’Connor identifies three ways modern people tend to deal with religious questions and the existence of God. List these here.
The Existential questions which are important to ask are, Why do we suffer? What happens after we die? and does god exist? Many religions will have answers for these questions, however the comparison between the Catholic viewpoint and the Secular Humanist viewpoint will be argued in this report.
In this report I will be comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between the religious tradition Christianity, with the world view of Secular Humanism.
A similarity is that both Catholicism and Secular Humanism believe that there is a moral code which must be followed to live a peaceful life, however they differ as to the origin, with Catholicism being that God created the moral compass whereas Secular Humanists believe that human character and behaviour created moral beliefs. Both believe in the ethical principles and the dignity and worth of all people and creation. Both also believe in the truth setting individuals free and that there is a purpose in life. Another similarity is that both believe that something happened in the universe a long time ago which created human life and the earth which we live on.
