The poem reads, in describing the young King Arthur, as “ (Arthur) the most attractive of his size who could sit on a horse. For while in back and chest his body was forbidding, both his belly and waist were becomingly trim.” (Gawain, 141 – 143). From this description, King Arthur is an attractive young man. The Green Knight is mentioned to be muscular and handsome as well during his introduction to the poem. Medieval scholars continually inspect the particularities of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (SGGK) within the context of the preexisting Gawain literary tradition, and the issue of Gawain’s sudden antifeminist diatribe repeatedly comes to the forefront of these textual investigations. Often, literary critics claim that Gawain’s antifeminist outburst is common for the fourteenth century and that his acceptance to wear the girdle as a sign of shame still epitomizes him as a model of knighthood. Other scholars hesitate to dismiss Gawain’s misogyny as commonplace, they note that this moment is inconsistent with his reputation as an ideal knight. Gawain’s hasty compulsion to blame women suggests ruptures within the essentiality of his chivalric identity and a closer examination of the text reveals that this moment is not isolated. Despite scholars repeated attempts to identify the essential knight within Gawain, there are several examples of Gawain’s unstable identity throughout the text. I will argue Sir Gawain’s knightly identity is performative rather than essential, and his diatribe is the culmination of his failure to perform his own expected social identity.

In Lanval, nature v. humanity comes to play when the Queen is rejected by Sir Lanval for the Nymph who stole his heart. By this display of rejection the Queen falsely accuses Lanval as a man who betrays the oath and code of conduct to King Arthur and the rest comes to play. On the other hand, in “Sir Gawain and The Green Knight” the theme of nature v. humanity is demonstrated through the characters of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. In this poem, Sir Gawain represents humanity, civilization and honor while the Green Knight represents nature and deviance. This concept is presented in the wager the was made between the Knight and the Green Knight, in this “beheading game”.
In the fourteenth century, chivalry was in decline due to drastic social and economic changes. Although feudalism-along with chivalry-would eventually fall for other reasons, including a decrease in cheap human resources due to a drop in population caused by plague epidemics and the emergence of a mercantile middle class, the Gawain author perceived a loss of religious values as the cause of its decline. Gawain and the Green Knight presents both a support of the old feudal hierarchies and an implicit criticism of changes by recalling chivalry in its idealized state in the court of King Arthur. A notable paradox is seen in the appearance of the Green Knight. The first conflict in the poem occurs when an unknown rider appears before King Arthur’s court. The appearance of the mysterious rider is described meticulously. This unknown rider is a big, burly man: “From broad neck to buttocks so bulky and thick, / And his loins and legs so long and so great, / Half a giant on earth I hold him to be” (138-140). This man’s body is strange since it is intimidating but also attractive: “For in back and in breast though his body was grim, / His waist in its width worthily small, / And formed with every feature in fair accord” (143-145). Also, the rider has a holly bob in one hand, signifying goodwill and peace, and in the other hand an ax, which is threatening. His appearance and physique is confounding to the court and the reader in its rugged, imposing quality and in its refined, charming features, but possibly even more baffling is that the man is green: “At his hue most strange to see, / For man and gear and all / Were green as green could be” (148-150). The Green Knight, his clothing, gear, and horse are green. His appearance is natural yet unnatural: “That a horseman and a horse should have such a hue, / Grow green as the grass, and greener it seemed, / Than green fused on gold more glorious by far” (234-236). Green is the main color of nature and vegetation, while men and horses come from nature, it is unnatural for them to be green. The green enamel on gold is unnatural and contrasts what the green color represents. How can someone be rugged yet refined, imposing yet benevolent, and unnatural yet natural? Gawain is a knight of the Round Table and he is also the nephew of King Arthur. As a knight, Gawain is expected to possess and abide by many chivalrous facets. Throughout the poem he portrays many of the qualities a knight should possess, such as bravery, courtesy, and honor among others. Because of his ability to possess these virtues even when tempted to stray away from them, Sir Gawain is a true knight.
A close reading of the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight reveals a very antifeminist view. The poem, told in four parts, tells of common medieval folklore. The stories seem to be of different plotlines, but start to intersect in interesting ways – that is, the character of Morgan Le Fay begins to frame the stories together. The half-sister of King Arthur, she holds intense hatred for her half-brother and his court. It is her thirst for the downfall of Camelot that makes this character infamous, and, surprisingly, her success and the strength of her ability that give a bad name to women. The author of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” is unknown, but he is sometimes referred to as the “Gawain Poet” or “Pearl Poet” because of his additional works: “Pearl,” “Purity,” and “Patience.” All four poems were part of the Alliterative Revival of the Middle Ages of Northern England, containing mostly religious content. Each stanza ends with one short line and four longer lines, called the bob and wheel, which “knits” the story together. It may important to note that the work was most likely written in the fourteenth century.
