Through the short story’s depiction of the king, his daughter, the princess, her secret lover and the king’s gruesome amphitheater, evil is clearly the stronger force in the world, which proves that jealousy and hatred can make people do evil things. In the story “The Lady, Or The Tiger?,” written by Frank R. Stockton, the king built an arena where convicted felons would go and chose a door: one that held a tiger behind it and would result in their death, or one that held a lady behind it, and would result in immediate marriage to her, no matter if he already had a family. The king eventually became aware of a secret relationship that his daughter had with a man, and the king put the man in the arena for the public to all witness his decision. The princess found out which door held either outcomes and discreetly told the man which door to go to, but the ending is never told, for it is your assumption on how the story unfolded. …show more content…

Also in the story it states “No matter how the affair turned out, the youth would be disposed of, and the king would take an aesthetic pleasure in watching the course of events, which would determine whether or not the young man had done wrong in allowing himself to love the princess.” This proves that the king got joy out of either seeing his daughter’s love of her life get mauled to death by a tiger or seeing him end up married to a woman that he knew his daughter hated.
