As a 19th century painter, Paul Cézanne was known to be one of the greatest Post-Impressionist artist (Bauer, 2016). The skills that Cézanne implemented in his art work include using a vivid pallet and sensitive brushstrokes. By using these techniques, it makes the painting look more radiant and complex. The Large Bathers is known to be part of a series called The Bathers, and they are displayed in different museums such as London and Philadelphia. The Bathers is considered to be one of the masterpieces of modern art and his finest art (Bauer, 2016). By examining his paintings, Cézanne seems to studying nude and exploring the connections between people. Most of his work was started in 1897, but was not completed until 1906. The visual perception of exudes a relaxed and calm aura. Cézanne uses light and dark blues to create a cloudy affect, while also using a yellow and gold tone to have some source of light. The tone of each bather contrast well with the background. It blends well with the trees and the river. The mood is very calm and collected. This analysis is based off of just the colors of the painting. It is difficult to tell when you are looking at it from a virtual perspective. Being physically there and seeing it in person would give the painting a slightly different feeling. Imagining the painting in real life, I could sense the mood to be very symbolic or mystical. It gives a sense of classical myths and history. The painting would stand out more and the colors would be more noticeable to analyze. Through the physical aspect, I could imagine the brush strokes to be obvious but smooth at the same time. Paul Cézanne was known to use obvious brush stroke, as it gives his work an unfinished quality. Through pictures, you cannot tell whether he uses that technique. It looks very clean and sharp through the online picture. Overall, through virtual or a physical perspective, the painting gives a harmonized and balanced
Then there are also many psychological lines to be seen in the work. One such line is of the woman and the floor, where she is staring down towards it. Another is from the young child and the store clerk, showing a defiance between the two. Next, light and value are not very contrasting in this painting, with only the basic highlights and the shadows seen. It isn’t completely contrasting or contradicting since the colors blend well together with close to the same value ranges, dark colors seen throughout except for the people’s pale faces. There also seems to be a variety of light sources since the woman’s face along with the shop clerk and the young boy’s is lit up by what seems to be a light bulb since they’re much brighter and highlighted and then the men and women in the back aren’t really as bright, except for the ones who close to the open door, creating a blue tinge from the outside light. The shapes shown through the painting is shown to be either very round or very geometrical. There are organic shapes in things such as the umbrella or even the back of the chair, but mostly it is either straight lines and geometrical shapes. The volume shown in the painting is very much implied, correctly showing the
One of the last topics we discussed in class turned out to be a form of art that probably interests me more than almost every other type of art that we have discussed this entire semester. That form of art is the impressionist style of painting. I really love all the different brush strokes that form different images for different people. I also enjoy much of the images that the impressionists painted, because they are usually very relaxed and mellow images that put you into a comfortable place. The post-impressionist period, especially very early post-impressionist, is even better I think. I think it’s better because it is just a little more refined and puts more emphasis on the figure and form of different objects. Since I enjoyed the post-impressionist’s
Van Gogh's use of line really gives depth and character to the piece. The first line that caught my eye was the line outlining the bottom of the bed. The strong stroke really gives you a sense of distance between the bottom of the frame and the floor. Had it been a thin line like those to depict the floorboards, it would look like the bed was sitting directly on the floor. His use of brush strokes and the thickness of them vary immensely in the painting to create depth. The strong strokes of
He created a new way of observing nature. A type of analysis wherein he deconstructs what he sees and then reconstructs it on the canvas, giving it a new structure. The impact of Cézanne’s work is seen throughout modern art for many years after his death. In 1907, the year after his death, there was a retrospective of Cézanne’s life, which is said to have been how the majority of the avant-garde was won over by his work (Ofila,3). “Mount Sainte-Victoire”, being painted in the final years of his life, is a great summation of Cézanne’s technique and artistic style. It is therefore, a good representation of his brand of modernism. All the techniques that Cézanne developed over the course of his life were employed in this painting, which makes it, though not a very famous one, a great
The first thing one should notice is the emphasis on titular house. It completely stands out from the rest of the painting, not because
The texture of the painting itself is probably rough. The artist makes no great attempt at conveying implied texture to the viewer. It seems as though implying texture may detract from the overall attitude of the piece. Altogether texture doesn’t play a huge role in this work of art.
Also the variety of tone in the painting gives an emotion effect through light and dark tonal ranges. The blending of the colours impacts the overall feeling of the painting. The artist has used blending to get a three dimensional feeling. I feel that the painting was meant to leave a sad emotion because of the darker colours used as the artist only used light colours when necessary. For example in the painting the only time bright colours are used is when the artist is trying to show where the light is hitting or reflecting on his face.
One strong aspect of this painting is it has a strong sense of both harmony and unity. The painting achieves harmony by using similar elements throughout the work and unity by making a quality of wholeness or oneness to the painting. Even though there are many different hues in this painting none have an overpowering feeling over the work which brings wholeness to the work. The work has repetition and rhythm of colors such as blue and patterns like the swirling brush strokes which brings many elements throughout the work.
During Neil Mcclelland’s artist talk, I was really inspired by the way he working with traditional materials and contemporary elements at the same time. Meanwhile, a large number of his works are dealing with identity, body, time, and memory. To me, the most interesting work is the series of appropriation art named the “Bathers”, which is a bizarre and “chaotic” piece that contains interesting connections between time and memory.

The feel of the picture lends to emotions of unease and recognition of sexual innuendo. The colors of the painting are vibrant, but for the most part are dark. The heavy tones and shades of the colors are well balanced throughout the piece. It can be noted that the brightest shades of color are found on areas depicting the actual woman. In areas that are understood as landscape, the colors are more dreary and create a sense of instability. Even Hess observes that the
All the parts of the painting are perceived to belong together. The painting is balanced; every part of the composition feels equal on all parts. Because the painting is balanced, a sense of calmness and security is demonstrated. Through the painting, there appears to be little

The relationship in the painting between the mother and daughter give it a definite asymmetrical balance and maybe a little radial balance. A radial balance because of their eyes being the central focus, then the faces, then the holding of each other, then where they are placed on the canvas, and then the bench and the landscape. The colors used by the painter, also creates balance with in the picture. The wine colored dress of the mother, red sash of the daughter’s dress, ruby lips, and the rosy cheeks give a warm feeling to the central focus of the mother and daughter. The cool color of the sky is the same as the women’s eyes as well as the trees and green on the mother’s dress. These balances give unity or a unifying feeling to the painting, especially between the mother and daughter.
Paul Cezanne’s painting “The Large Bathers” was his last and arguably his greatest work. Cezanne labored on this painting for seven years. The subject is a group of women bathing by a river. The canvas
