Introduction
Leonardo da Vinci is best known for his painting of the Last Supper (Figure 1) and most noted as an artist but is also known as an architect, inventor and chronicler of science. The Last Supper painting depicts Jesus hosting his last supper with his disciples before he is crucified and this painting can be found in many churches and homes across the world. This is also a symbol of Communion or Eucharist as Jesus performed this rite during this gathering and also the prediction of betrayal by Judas. This particular painting was created for the dining hall of a Milan Monastery. This painting has significant meaning to me as this was displayed as a background on the opening of my grandmother’s casket at her funeral as this was truly her favorite painting.

The Purpose of the paintings of the “Last Supper,” by Ugolino di Nerio and Leonardo da Vinci, were to portray the betrayal of Jesus Christ by of one the twelve apostles, as they are having the last meal. Jesus Christ mentions to his apostles that there is going to be a betrayal amongst them. All twelve apostles had mixed feelings of anger, fear, and surprised. Later on, it turns out that Judas, one of the twelve apostles, had told the authorities about Jesus so he can be arrested then later crucified. The paintings show a dramatic scene after the claim by Jesus Christ. The paintings give us insight to get the reader interested in the painting of “The Last Supper,” how the cultures that produced those paintings change the way we paint today, and how both paintings influenced the Renaissance era.

Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper is one of the most well-known paintings of the Renaissance Era, if not one of the most famous paintings in the world. The Last Supper was a commission by Ludovico Sforza, who was da Vinci’s patron, for the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan around we believe 1495. It took approximately three years to complete. The painting itself was done on a refectory, dining hall, wall inside the convent; making it around fifteen feet by twenty-nine feet.
The Last Supper has been and will be one of the most talked about works of Leonardo Da Vinci’s art. Da Vinci started the painting in 1495 and completed it in 1498. He used tempera as the medium because it was the only one that would work. The Last Supper was a powerful Biblical event, in which Jesus and his disciples gathered for one final dinner together. Furthermore, this specific piece of artwork contains the event depicted in the bible as the final days when Jesus proclaimed that he would be betrayed by one of his twelve disciples.
As we all know the Last Supper is the last dinner that Jesus shared with his Apostles before he was betrayed and crucified. Although this theme occurs in many works, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci is the most famous and has been a subject of many discussions.
Imitating what the Greeks did with their civilization, the Italians created their own versions of the city states. What brought about this sudden change in the political system of the peninsula? Probably the most important catalyst for this shift towards the city-state system is the fall of the Western Roman Empire. This was reinstated, of course, with the reestablishment of the empire as the Holy Roman Empire, with Charlemagne as its first emperor. With the Crusades exhausting their resources and with no emperor to rule over them, people were left to rule over themselves. This is coupled to feudalism springing up in Western Europe; the lord-servant system enabled powerful people to rule vast hectares, and developed them into the cities we
