Early life
Sitting Bull was born in Dakota Territory. He was named Jumping Badger at birth, when he was fourteen years old he accompanied a group of Lakota warriors (which included his father and his uncle Four Horns) in a raiding party to take horses from a camp of Crow warriors. Jumping Badger displayed bravery by riding forward and counting coup on one of the surprised Crow, which was witnessed by the other mounted Lakota. Upon returning to camp his father gave a celebratory feast at which he conferred his own name upon his son.

The name, Tȟatȟaŋka Iyotȟaŋka (Tatanka Iyotake), which in the Lakota language means "Buffalo Bull Sits Down", would later be abbreviated to "Sitting Bull". Thereafter, Sitting Bull 's father was known as Jumping Bull. At this ceremony before the entire band, Sitting Bull 's father presented his son with an eagle feather to wear in his hair, a warrior 's horse, and a hardened buffalo hide shield to mark his son 's passage into manhood as a Lakota warrior.
Red Clouds War
From 1866 to 1868, Red Cloud as a leader of the Lakota fought against US forces, attacking their forts in an effort to keep control of the Powder River Country of Montana. In support of him, Sitting Bull led numerous war parties against Fort Berthold, Fort Stevenson, and Fort Buford and their environs from 1865 through 1868. One legend explained the origins of bulls, or bison and how they came . Splinter Foot Girl was a beautiful girl born from a warrior’s leg that was swollen from a thorny plant. A bull, called the bone bull, sent out to marry her, but was turned away. He tried multiple times, and finally, she gave in to him and went to live with the bone bull as his wife. Splinter Foot Girl’s father and the rest of the people she lived with missed her terribly, so they helped her escape by having a badger and a gopher dig through the ground to help her get away. The US met with Red Cloud and representatives of the Lakota, Arapaho and Cheyenne. The Ft. Laramie Treaty was signed that created the Great Sioux Reservation. Red Cloud made a trip to Washington DC in 1870 to meet with President Ulysses S. Grant. He made the trip along with several Lakota representatives. Upon his visit to Washington, Red Cloud was given the same treatment that a head of state would be given. Sitting Bull and his wives lived in Tipis which were conical dwellings made of buffalo skins stretched over a framework of lodge poles. They stood with other tipis of the band near rivers or creeks. In cold weather a fire burned in the center of the tipi where cooking took place. In nice weather the fire was built outside. The women of the tipi were in charge of cooking, cleaning, and raising the children. She was in charge of the girls until they married and the boys until their voices changed. The women were not considered beneath the men. They each had jobs to do. In fact, the mother ran the tipi affairs, after all she owned the lodge and all the family belongings, not the husband.

Native Americans have lived through many hardships that made us humans question our values and beliefs. In the 19th century, the displacement of Native Americans from their home land marked the biggest genocide in world history. Later on, the killing stopped and new measures came into action. Native Americans were put in border schools and as mentioned in the quote above, were taught a new culture that eliminates everything they knew about their lives. This paper will examine how the treatment of Native Americans described by Sitting Bull demonstrates both the need for and limitations of an international declaration of human rights.
