The writing handbook I use is The Little Seagull Handbook. The specific area I see myself making the most mistakes with punctuation is comma splices. Sometimes I place commas in sentences where I think they are supposed to be, but really they are not. I think punctuation is probably the most common mistake I make when writing a paper. I changed my second goal to providing more details and examples in my writing. I thought I expanded pretty well on important specifics in my papers, but I noticed there are still some parts where I do not provide sufficient detailed information. Introduction: Ways of Reading can be difficult to understand at times, but if you break it down it becomes easier to understand. Some of the quotes written by David Bartholomae and Anthony Petrosky can be used to look at the greater picture and do not just apply to reading and writing. Three quotes really stuck out to me while I was reading the introduction of this book. It was not just because they were great advice on reading and writing, but because they can also be applied to everyday life or certain situations in life. There are lessons to be learned in this introduction such as challenging others and students, understanding that there are different interpretations of things, and finding the meaning as you go along.

Strategic readers monitor their thinking and recognize when errors are committed but they also know what strategy to use to correct the error. For example, they may need to reread the text to make sense, use context clues to understand unfamiliar words. No matter what the obstacle is, a fix-up strategy is applied. The K-W-L is a well- known teaching technique to assist in the monitoring strategy. The K-W-L chart provides the teacher and students opportunity to participate in discussions before, during, and after reading. It helps the student to ask and answer questions, identify the main idea and detail, and summarize the text (Santoro, Baker, Fien, Smith, and Chard, 2016 p. 284).

This can also be through the use of paraphrasing (summarizing) each paragraph and/or applying the KWL(S) reading approach after reading. Afterwards, students will need to find ways to relate what they have learned from the text to their lives in order to connect to the readings and comprehend what they have read.

In the 4th chapter of Writing Today, titled Summaries, it teaches the reader how to properly summarize a topic. Knowing the main points of the topic will help you, the writer, to better convey the main points of your summary. In this chapter, it explains the steps of how to analyze a topic and rewrite it in your own thoughts. Reading the text multiple times will help you get a better understanding, taking notes of key topics or words will help when you are writing the summary. When it comes to finding the best way to read a text, one might think that all you have to do is read through the entire text. There is not a best way to approaching a text, but rather there is a best way to approach the text for the individual. How a person understand something depends on how they try to approach it first.

During reading strategies are extremely helpful to me while reading my novel. I find asking questions help me better understand the novel better. For example on page 130 Miles and Alaska are playing Truth or Dare and Alaska dares Miles to “hook up” with her; and he does exactly that. I asked myself why Alaska does these things even though she has a boyfriend. This helped me understand that Alaska is an attention seeker so she does these type of things when she does have any attention from anyone.
