“The Lottery” “The Lottery” was written in 1948 by Shirley Jackson. Mrs. Jackson, born in 1916, was known for her tales of horror and supernatural novels. She and her literary critic husband, Stanley Edgar Hyman lived in a little town called Bennington, Vermont. Mrs. Jackson was not accepted by the town. Her novels, especially “The Lottery”, revealed the dark side of human nature. Stephen King honored Shirley Jackson by dedicating his book Firestarter to her. “The Lottery” takes place on June 27th in the common ground between the post office and the bank around ten o’clock. The protagonist in this story is hard to identify. However, if I was to choose one, it would have to be Tessie Hutchinson. This is because she is the only one who spoke up about the lottery. Her and Mr. Adams. Though, Mr. Adams only stated other towns were quitting the lottery. Mrs. Hutchinson declared it was unfair. Even though, she most likely only stood up because she did not want to die. She kept protesting that they re-do the lottery. Mrs. Hutchinson was not the nicest character seeing how she called out her daughter demanding to “Make them take their chance!” (pg. 294). I don’t know what kind of mother would try to put death on her own daughter. Perhaps Tessie is a coward. Whatever the case might be she was the only one standing up against this tradition. The conflict in this short story is the lottery; who will be drawn to their death by a black spot. I believe the conflict goes deeper than
