I read the book The Pearl by John Steinbeck. This book was wrote in 1947. The main character is Kino. Kino has a wife Juana and a infant son Coyotito. They live in a modest brush house by the sea. One morning a scorpion stings Coyotito. Hoping to protect their son, Kino and Juana rush him to the doctor in town. The doctor turns them away because they are poor natives who cannot pay enough. Later that same morning, Kino and Juana take their family canoe, an heirloom, out to the estuary to go diving for pearls. Juana makes a bandage for Coyotito’s wound, while Kino searches the sea bottom. Juana’s prayers for a large pearl are answered when Kino surfaces with the largest pearl either of them has ever seen. Kino lets out a triumphant yell at his good fortune. In the afternoon, the whole neighborhood gathers at Kino’s brush house to celebrate his find. Kino names a list of things he will do with his new wealth. Including a education for his son. The neighbors wonder if he is foolish or wise to harbor such ambitions.
Toward evening, the local priest visits Kino to bless him in his good fortune and to remind him of his place within the church. Shortly after, the doctor arrives, explaining that he was out in the morning but has come now to cure Coyotito. He gives a powdered capsule and promises to return in an hour. While the doctor is gone Coyotito grows violently ill, and Kino decides to bury the pearl under the floor in a corner of the brush house. The doctor returns and feeds
“The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, truly has a great example to the life lesson on greed. A family destroyed and a culture distressed is what one can see in the short story, “The Pearl.” Greed plays an important role in the lesson of “The Pearl,” in which John Steinbeck uses imagery and foreshadowing to highlight this theme and he utilizes personification and similes/metaphors to explain the theme easily.
Finally, after being hunted by trackers and the death of Coyotito, Kino throws the pearl back into the ocean.
The book starts off with Kino waking up next to his wife Juana. Kino looks at his baby Coyotito and notices a scorpion crawling down a rope into his cradle then crawls onto Coyotito. The song of danger is sung while Kino reaches his hand towards the scorpion to try to save Coyotito. The scorpion stings coyotito and Kino throws it off of coyotito and punches it into the ground. Kino takes the baby to the doctor but the doctor refuses to help Kino's family because they don't have money to pay the doctor to help Coyotito. Kino punches the gate and they go down to the beach. At the beach Kino takes his boat out to look for pearls while Juana wraps Coyotito's sting with seaweed. While Kino is diving for pearls he finds one the size of a seagull egg in a oyster. Kino rush Coyotito to the doctor again now that they have the money to pay the doctor to help him.. Then Juana takes the seaweed off of Coyotito's sting and everyone notices that the sting was getting better. So they leave the doctor and everyone in the village finds out about the pearl. People gather around Kino's house to look at the pearl. Then the doctor comes and tells Kino that Coyotito won't live unless he takes some medicine. While the doctor is there he finds out the hiding spot of the pearl. Later that night some people jumped Kino and tried to steal the pearl but fails and runaway. The next day they decide Kino and his family should sell the pearl. They go and try to sell the pearl but our given low prices to try to get the pearl for cheap. So Kino decides not to sell the pearl and headed back home. Later that night Juana tries to throw the pearl back into the ocean but Kino stops
Characters contribute to creating a theme in stories we read with physical, verbal, and mental actions. The Pearl written by John Steinbeck is about a poor family living their usual life in their village when their son gets sick and they cannot purchase medical care. They usually go pearl diving and find nothing but are blessed with a huge pearl. The pearl can create great riches but also creates great suffering with in the village. In the book The Pearl by John Steinbeck the characters, The Doctor and Kino helped develop the theme or greed and power can make one's downfall.
Many people in the world today grow crazy and mad when surrounded by even the slightest bit of wealth and good fortune. Even a strong person who recognizes their priorities can still become corrupt with too much power. There is no better example of a person falling into the path of evil and corruption than in a novel written by John Steinbeck. In the novel The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, the author writes about a poor Indian man named Kino who becomes corrupt from the wealth of a magnificent pearl. Steinbeck uses the motifs of music, light and dark imagery, and values to develop the theme that good fortune, wealth, and prosperity steer even the most innocent of people towards a path of evil and corruption. The reader learns that one
Juan Tomas who is Kino’s older brother, warns him about the peculiarity about the unusual events that happen to him due to discovering the pearl. He says “ There is a devil in this pearl. You should have sold it and passed on the devil” (Bender 98). This quote shows Juan his happy for his brother and wants him to be wealthy but he is also nervous about how society and his life will change around him because everyone wants the pearl. He hides Kino and Juana in his house after he finds out Kino had killed someone to protect himself. Apolonia who is Juan’s wife warns Kino as well about the dangers of the pearls discovery. She has four children too and agrees to give Kino and Juana housing if they need it. Those characters are well aware of the strange occurrences that follow the finding of the pearl. Steinbeck has included them in his book to show that greed can come of a situation like as illustrated in the book. Another character the doctor, is represented in the book as selfishness and greed in the society. He does not agree to treat Coyotito after he has been bitten by a scorpion until he finds out Kino has a pearl that is worth great fortune. Most people in the book become close to Kino to be closer to the pearl. This demonstrates the lust for currency, which Steinbeck truly despises. The priest as well tries to get close to Kino in hopes he can receive some money. The trackers and
This time, they would have to start over without Coyotito. And also, this would especially hurt Kino. Even if nothing particularly dreadful came to pass, Kino would probably feel horrible about his ignorance and how he got his and his family's hopes up- all for nothing. He would realize how the pearl had deluded him until this moment, and would live in embarrassment for the rest of his life.
In The Pearl’s first chapter, Kino’s son, Coyotito, is bitten by a scorpion. Kino and Juana seek help from a doctor who is “not of [Kino’s] people.” He is instead “of a race which for nearly four hundred years had beaten and starved and robbed and despised Kino’s race, and frightened it too.” These mistreatments are acts of hatred. The doctor, also due to hatred, refuses to treat Coyotito.
John Steinbeck’s, The Pearl, describes a man and his family’s journey through financial setbacks, racism and the discovery of a pearl that changed their lives. The pearl, is the cause directly and indirectly of every troublesome event that occurs throughout the novel. There are three key events that clearly illustrate that the pearl is the cause of all misfortune. At first, Kino proclaims his visions derived from the pearl’s illusory value and his words backfire and result in great loss in the end. This is followed by Kino refusing the pearl buyers’ offer, sparking a chain reaction of unfortunate events. In addition to this, the hunters seeking for the pearl, whilst acting out of greed, end up destroying Kino’s family.

When Juana follows Kino back to their brush house, she sees it burning. Juana says, “It was torn up and floor dug, even the baby’s box turned out, and as I looked they put the fire to the outside”(63). This quote shows how Kino’s decision to keep the pearl cost his family their house. Kino realizes that it is time to go to the city and cash in the pearl. However, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are being tracked. They decide to go to the top of a mountainside where there is a cave. Since there are trackers hunting Kino for the pearl, he decides to creep up behind them and kill them. However, before Kino made a move, the trackers heard a noise at the cave were Juana and Coyotito are staying and then shoot towards that way and hits Coyotito. After Kino kills the trackers he rushes back to the cave and “Saw Coyotito lying in the little cave with the top of his head shot away”(86). This quote shows how Kino’s greed is destroying his and Juana’s lives. It shows how he lost his only son because he let a pearl control his
