Schizophrenia is affecting people more now than a few decades ago. This illness is across the US and is present in every culture. People are now aware and understand how the illness can be devastating to one’s life. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder of the brain but it is highly treatable. In the US the total amount of people affected with the illness is about 2.2 % of the adult population. The average number of people affected per 1000 total population is 7.2 % per 1000, which means a city that is consists of 3 million people will have approxiamately 21,000 people suffering from schizophrenia. People with mental illness should seek early treatment to be stabilized with medications. During a 10 year period 25% of schizophrenics

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder often characterized by abnormal social behaviour and failure to recognize what is real. Common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking, auditory hallucinations, reduced social engagement and emotional expression, and inactivity. A person with schizophrenia often hears voices, experiences delusions and hallucinations and may believe thoughts, feelings and actions are controlled or shared by someone else.

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects more than one percent of the population. When schizophrenia is active, symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, trouble with thinking and concentration, and lack of motivation. However, when these symptoms are treated properly, a large portion of those diagnosed will greatly improve over time.

Schizophrenia derives from the Greek words “split” and “mind”. Despite its name, it does not mean what it seems. When people hear the two words “split” and “mind’ they may automatically think of a multiple personality disorder, but that is different from schizophrenia (Barlow & Durand, 2015). Many people with schizophrenia hear voices, believe they are being stalked or watched by others, and do not always make sense when conversing. It has been discovered that those who suffer from schizophrenia, have dysfunctional neurotransmitters within their brain. This affects the message system in their brain (Nordqvist, 2015). Schizophrenia also affects the emotions of a person. Many times people with this disorder may seem withdrawn, or socially inept. Schizophrenia is often a misunderstood disorder. With many disorders individuals can at least empathize because in some form or another they can relate them to something; but, Schizophrenia has symptoms that make it harder for others to understand, such as hearing voices that are not there or speaking sentences that have no meaning (Oltmann & Emery, 2014). These patients can have misconceived thoughts of others around them too. They can not distinguish weather those are real people talking to them of they are hallucinating. Sometimes communicating with a person with schizophrenia is not that difficult you just have to keep them focused or they will start to have delusions. Sometimes while trying to communicate with a person with schizophrenia they might not respond to you at all. They may not be able to remember or understand the conversation that they've had with you because schizophrenia effects attention and verbal memory. Family Interventions are for teaching the family of a schizophrenic how to deal with the mental illness, the stress of their family member living with this illness and how to cope with medications and structure for the ill. Typically the family is left in the dark until the person with schizophrenia is being released from the hospital and still assumed that he or she will know what to do (Johnson, 2005).

For those with this disorder the symptoms may include hearing voices that are not there, believe that others are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, to even plotting to harm them. These symptoms have a terrifying effect on those with this illness making them withdrawn or even experience extreme agitation. Often those with Schizophrenia appear to make little to no sense when they are trying to communicate. These individuals can sit for hours without moving or even saying a word. Some times people with Schizophrenia seem perfectly normal until they begin talking about what they are truly thinking. We know today that over 3.5 million people or about one percent of the U.S. population suffers from this condition and estimates of over 24 million globally may be affected by this disease (NIH, 2015). While treatment is out there to help alleviate some of the symptoms that are associated with this condition, there’s no known cure for such a diseases; however advances are being made everyday within medicine to help treat those with Schizophrenia cope with their symptoms.

While we know schizophrenia is characterized by a multitude of distinctive and predictable symptoms, in some case, sufferers can still live a productive life and are able to hold down part-time and full time positions with a support system comprised of outside agencies designed to diminish the woes experienced by the abnormal behavior would otherwise
