On February 6th, 1958, the Manchester United soccer team were flying back from playing a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade in Yugoslavia when their charter plane crash-landed in Munich, Germany after a short refuelling stop. The crash claimed the lives of 23 people including 8 Manchester United players and three club officials. Other people who died in the crash were eight journalists, a travel agent and two crewmembers, one of which was the captain. In addition, Matt Busby United’s manager, was seriously hurt in the crash while Bobby Charlton only sustained minor injuries. An investigation into the crash found that the severe snowstorm in Munich resulted in a layer of slush at the end of the runway, which caused the plane to crash into a house on its third take-off attempt. The ‘Busby-Babes’ players who died were all aged in their early to mid-twenties. Duncan Edwards, the centre-back player, survived the crash only to die fifteen days later due to his extensive injuries. Jimmy Murphy, the assistant manager of the team said that Duncan Edwards was, “ The greatest of them all” (MUTV, 1958 cited in Manchester United, 2014). The news of the crash made international headlines. The soccer world was grief stricken from the loss of these young talented players. In England, the news was met with disbelief and heartfelt sorrow. Bryan Hughes, a lifelong United supported summed up this sentiment when he said, “I felt the same kind of sadness when my dear old

Chesley Sullenberger was a pilot for Pacific Southwest airlines for twenty nine years before the Hudson River crash. He was departing from LaGuardia Airport when the plane collided with a flock of Canada Geese, causing the engines to fail. With lots of training and quick reflexes, he was able to turn the plane around and make a controlled water landing on the Hudson River, and saved all one hundred and fifty five passengers on board. He then became a hero and instant celebrity for the act and retired a year later to become an international speaker on airline safety. After thirty years as a commercial pilot, he concentrated on running his safety consulting business, Safety Reliability Methods Inc., which he founded in 2007.

Bill Buford talks about what he has seen happening within the soccer crowds in England. He is unhappy with the repeated violence, and tired of the burden he feels he’s carrying. He dislikes the violent actions of ‘The Firm’, and wants to go home to New York. I however, have just finished work as a bouncer for a nightclub. There are loads of amazing footballers all over the world. Messi, Rooney, Kaka and many more, check out www.ilemi.com to watch their games. For me though one man stands out. The thing is the man in question does not make me like him, neither do I feel comfortable in acknowledging his greatness. The facts of the matter are, that he has everything. He has a tremendous amount of skill with such composure
