On February 6th, 1958, the Manchester United soccer team were flying back from playing a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade in Yugoslavia when their charter plane crash-landed in Munich, Germany after a short refuelling stop. The crash claimed the lives of 23 people including 8 Manchester United players and three club officials. Other people who died in the crash were eight journalists, a travel agent and two crewmembers, one of which was the captain. In addition, Matt Busby United’s manager, was seriously hurt in the crash while Bobby Charlton only sustained minor injuries. An investigation into the crash found that the severe snowstorm in Munich resulted in a layer of slush at the end of the runway, which caused the plane to crash into a house on its third take-off attempt. The ‘Busby-Babes’ players who died were all aged in their early to mid-twenties. Duncan Edwards, the centre-back player, survived the crash only to die fifteen days later due to his extensive injuries. Jimmy Murphy, the assistant manager of the team said that Duncan Edwards was, “ The greatest of them all” (MUTV, 1958 cited in Manchester United, 2014). The news of the crash made international headlines. The soccer world was grief stricken from the loss of these young talented players.
