The Mayans try to preserve their traditional culture. Traditional culture is ways of life and customs handed down from ancestors. Mayan homes are one room, and made out of brick or mud called adobe. They are simple, with packed Earth floors and little furniture. The family might have a table and chairs, and hammocks for sleeping. There is a cook fire in the middle of the home, with clay pots around it. The most important thing in the traditional Mayan home is a family altar, for religious worship. One traditional custom of their culture is to ask the Earth for permission to build a home. The Mayans are also adapting to modern life. Adaptation is the change in a way of life so you can suit new conditions. The modern Mayan homes in larger town might have running water and electricity. Some homes might even have televisions or radios, and cooking utensils are becoming more common. Homes also may have blenders, gas stoves, and other appliances. The roles of traditional roles of men and women are very different. The men work in the fields, and they sometimes thy hunt. They plant, weed, and harvest all of the crops. The women work at home. They cook, take care of the children, and weave clothes for the family. They make beans and tortillas, and the some tortillas are made the old way. They pat the corn dough out by hand, and fry it on a griddle. Although, some women make tortillas with a tortilla press made of metal. The roles of men and women are part of their traditional
The ancient Maya world is a world of magnificent architecture, art, pottery and illustrated books. The Maya culture has a very distinctive style of artistic expression, even more complex than any other in the Americas. Much of the Maya art represents the elite classes of the society and their everyday life. The elite classes were built up of mostly of the higher power officials and kings and queens. In the Maya elite world there is a lot of war related ceremonies and warfare that is a common theme in court art. As stated in the text, “These Maya wars were depicted as chaotic affairs aimed at the capture of individual prisoners, who were destined for sacrifice or slavery” (pg.74). The elite classes used these wars to capture the slaves and utilize

A game the Maya played was pok ta tok. It was a ball game, the ball they used was a five pound solid rubber ball. They could use their forearms and thighs to pass and hit the ball. The object of the game was to get the ball into hoops on either sides of the ball court. The hoops were over 20 feet above the court. The losers of the game had a punishment. The losers could be taken as prisoners or executed. The game was a large spectator sport, and was played during free time. High ranking captives were forced to play for their lives.
As we learned in lesson 5, an established path through social networking is a characteristic of displacement in Latin America. Social networks provide or connect displaced migrants from Latin America with certain resources and jobs and possibly increase the likelihood of keeping jobs. More simply put social networks serve as transitioning connections as well as increase the probability of successful living after having been displaced. A social network can be established in any of the new areas an individual may arrive to at any given time. In the lesson professor Nelson provided us with an ethnographic study about a Mayan community in Texas. Juan Chanax moved from Totonicapán Guatemala to the Houston Texas in the U.S., he and his brother-in-law
There are many religious beliefs of a Mayan, and they are formed on the notion that everything in the world contains some sort of sacredness. The terms that they used to describe the sacredness was “K’uh” and “K’uhul”. This was used to describe the spirituality in the inanimate and animate objects that have the most divine life force in existence. The Mayans believed that heaven and hell were separated into three different parts; The Upper world, Middle world, and the Underworld. The Upper world had thirteen levels, the Middle world had only one level, and the Underworld had nine levels.
Mayans have many beliefs, here are a few.First, the Mayans have one religion but they worship or believe in many gods. Mayans thought that if they did not do Human Sacrifices, the sun would not rise whatsoever. Mayans have a language not fully decoded or uncovered for that matter, because they use pictures or glyphs instead of letters. Mayans have beauty, but not in a way you think, they had jewels drilled into their teeth, pearls hanging in front of their eyes so they would be permanently cross eyed.
with understanding the how power is derived from the ruling classes, Ouelette delves into how kingship works (29). The ruling class used systems of organization, economic processes such as accumulation wealth and holding the highest religious status to maintain their position as leader. The stratified culture allowed the dominant class to have control over the population as dictated how the Maya culture progresses. The Maya culture was egalitarian at first, which means every individual is equal in nature and progressed to a state-level society. These natural functions in cultural evolution must be controlled by the ruling classes of Mesoamerica. These governing individuals did this by having a shared beliefs and religious practices. By the
This is the first book that I will probably use, since it talks about the rituals and everyday life in Mesoamerica, as well as the social order in the Mayan religion.
To this day, historians still discuss when exactly the Maya civilizations started but the most commonly accepted date is 1800 BCE in the Soconusco Region. Unlike other Mesoamerican civilizations, Maya was not confined to one area of land but rather stretched out over Central America. To historians today, the Maya civilization reached its peak during the Classic Period between AD 250 and 900. At its peak, the Maya population was over 2,000,000 people. Excavations of Mayan cities have uncovered plazas, temples, pyramids, ball playing courts, and even art. The peak of this civilization is considered to have occurred when the Mayans started to carve and produce beautiful low relief steles. The Stele in Figure 1 from the late Classic Maya period is an example of a low relief stele that the Mayans were so known for.
Every ancient civilization had a set of beliefs and the Mayan people were no different. The Mayan people believed in two worlds, the “everyday world and the underworld, or the Place of Awe,” (2012). The Mayans believed in many gods, human sacrifice and the burial process for the poor and the kings were very different.
It is said that to lose some culture's history is a tragedy, but to recover it is a miracle due to the valuable information it provides towards human development. If I were to talk about every single culture that has ever enriched us, I would never finish. However, explaining Maya Culture is a marvelous place to start.
The Maya Culture is one of the main cultures of Mexico and South America. This culture flourished during the early classic period until the post classic period. the Maya area includes the Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Yucatan (Mexico) and some parts of Chiapas (Mexico), as well as the Western of Honduras.
From the passage I read in POPOL VUH which was tranlated and commeted by Allen J. Chriteson, I learned that the Mayan culture was not so much military based like other cultures in other areas such as Europe or Asia. The Mayan has already cultivated great identity and culture before the Spanish conquested. Surprisingly, the Mayan literacy was not ended with the Spainish's arrival. The high class in Maya made precolumbian books which presverd the history and culture. In the Culture of Stone, I found the most interesting thing was the role that stone play in the society. The use of stone for construction hlep to form a more unified society by having occupation.
The ancient Maya civilization could be categorized into a few simple sections, the religion, the advancements in math and science, and the daily life. Their religion consisted of many things like deities, religious services, calendars, priests, temples, and so much more. The Mayan religion was integrated into every single aspect of Mayan life. It even affected the name of their children. The Mayans made most of their decisions based on the priests.
The Maya civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization developed by the Maya peoples, and noted for its hieroglyphic script—the only known fully developed writing system of the pre-Columbian Americas—as well as for its art, architecture, mathematics, calendar, and astronomical system. The Maya civilization developed in an area that encompasses southeastern Mexico, all of Guatemala and Belize, and the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador. This region consists of the northern lowlands encompassing the Yucatán Peninsula, and the highlands of the Sierra Madre, running from the Mexican state of Chiapas, across southern Guatemala and onwards into El Salvador, and the southern lowlands of the Pacific littoral plain.
