In the cartoon, Angela Merkel is looking back at the people she represents to see if they agree or oppose, proving her thoughts of protectionism as well, because she wants to protect her country’s businesses as well.
Do you agree or disagree with the viewpoint of the item you chose? Why or why not?
I agree with the viewpoint of the item because Germany and much of Europe has been dealing with an economic crisis, and they would make a good decision to build up their manufacturing again before taking part in more international trade. It is good to trade, but with the recent turmoil that Germany and the rest of the European Union has faced, they are already struggling economically in the European Union, and it makes no sense to add another trade deal that has the possibility of hurting domestic production.
Picture: Mexican farmer burns a tractor in protest of NAFTA
From The Guardian news website, in a story published the 4th of January 2014, “NAFTA: 20 Years of Regret for Mexico.” http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/04/nafta-20-years-mexico-regret What is the issue discussed in the visual media item you chose? The issue discussed is whether mexican farmers benefited or were hurt by the North American Free Trade Agreement. The picture depicts a farmer holding a
This cartoon is depicting Australia’s politics denying Australia citizens the right of same sex marriage, using the iconic TV show, The Voice, to convey the message. The audience is first drawn to Tony Abbott who is shown with overlarge ears and stating that he should not be ‘expect[ed]’ to ‘turn’ around for same sex marriage, which represents him not allowing it. The way he is sitting is also showing his stubbornness on the issue. The audience then see the other “judges” who have all said yes to marriage equality. This represents USA, Ireland and New Zealand who all allow same sex marriage. These countries being used may be to make the audience feel as if Australia is falling behind these countries that we are so similar to.
The artist’s overall message portrayed in the poster is ultranationalism. For instance, the poster depicts a clenched fist symbolizing unity, strength and defiance. Furthermore it conveys feelings of bondage to the Germans who are viewing it because of the chain. As a result of these two images which overshadow the factory in the background, a desire to free the Germans from the Dews plan grows within the hearts of the
The epoch that the cartoon was drawn in was defined by the emergence of a central force in geopolitics: The nation-state. The force of nationalism, neither benevolent
In this political cartoon, you can see that there are 8 people on land, just on the edge of land, calling out for a ship that has just sailed called “Corporate Greed”. Above their heads are some text bubble saying, “Don’t go!” “Come back!” and, “Our jobs!” There are even two people chasing the ship by swimming after it.
I even had to do a quick search on the Internet to see what NAFTA stood for. After reading the article, what stood out the most to be was the amount of indigenous people who have migrated to the United States. I did not imagine the amount of indigenous Mexicans living in the United States to be so high. These people should not be leaving their own country just to search for jobs to be able to survive. They should be able to grow crops and be able to sell them for a reasonable price, not have the price of crops so low to the point that they have to go hungry and believe their own solution is to become farmworkers in a new country. While NAFTA has created jobs, they have caused the loss of way too many jobs and the displacement of more people that I would have
Symbolism is an important device for creating meaning in cartoon by eliminating words. This technique can be inferred everywhere anywhere basically anything that a human can see will have at least on symbolism either implied to its appearance, behaviour or it can just be someone or something one has given a meaning to. Symbolism is often used in political cartoons by editorialists as they are able to imbed deeper meaning into their creations. Also, from using this satirical device in the image audiences are able to have an open mind of what is occurring or even interpret their own meaning. ‘Trump Wants a Kiss’ is a political cartoon that has a variety of symbols. Enlightenment, is shown through the torch that is seen held in the left hand of the statue; from the way Statue Liberty is hold the torch and trying to defend herself with it, she is almost telling Trump to stop and to lighten up. Another object that the Lady Liberty is holding is a tablet and written on it is the date of American Independence (July 4, 1776) written in Roman numerals. As can be seen she is using this tablet as if it was a shield, which can imply that those that do not give authority to Trump is using this event (American Independence) against Trump. Therefore, this satirical device, symbolism, is able to portray the message as Trump is attempting to give the Statue of Enlightening the World a kiss to being the new boss, Lady Liberty is refusing and is stopping in him in his path and will be another competition for Trump to
Recently, there has been news with the conflict with Russia and America, Russia is forcibly going to invade Ukraine, because not long ago when Russia was still called Soviet Union, Ukraine was part on the Soviet Union and but then Ukraine declared Independence. Now Russia, wants Ukraine to be part of the Russia Federation. While many Ukrainians and Americans were opposed to this Russia still refuse to hear Obama even though he pleads Vladimir not to send troops to Ukraine. Cartoonist Leah, in her cartoon published in The Courier Mail on March 4 2014, titled “In the Cold Again”, takes a satirical look with the conflict with Vladimir and Obama. The cartoon is a response to Vladimir invading Ukraine and Obama making opposing to
Political cartoons remain an underestimated force for shaping public opinion. Caricatures’ ability to encapsulate complex political issues into a single picture make them highly valuable in discerning the social and political climate of an era. Cartoonist Daniel Robert Fitzpatrick’s work “You Can Stop It In Poland, Can You, Adolf?” captured the American imagination of the German military machine and its leader, Adolf Hitler.
In this political cartoon, the opinion is that Obama thinks he can fix everything. In the cartoon, terrorists are trying to kill people in America with a rocket labeled “Death to America” which is symbolism and labels. Obama thinks he can fix it with one simple solution. The solution he is using in the picture is magic or magic dust to get rid of the terrorists which is symbolism for the U.S. This is an interpretation, to what is going on in the real world.
This cartoon depicts the crumbling of the Clinton campaign as well as the crumbling of the Clinton Foundation. In the image, the ground splits the cartoon into two equal parts. One, the Clinton campaign and Hillary Clinton herself, and two, the Clinton Foundation. Both can be seen as falling apart by noticing the crumbling bricks of the statue and the fact that the statue itself is only standing on a thin ribbon of ground. Also, neither the statue nor her nameplate include any color depicting that she may have lost some of her luster. Another compelling image is the statue is looking up and to the right which can portray lying. One of the largest images are the two arrows in the piece. They both point to the left signifying that both Hillary
This political cartoon is from the tragedy play Julius Caesar. After Caesar’s death during the play, Mark Antony is asked to speak at his funeral. Brutus, Caesar’s good friend who betrayed him, conducted a speech first. The speech explained to the crowd that Julius Caesar needed to be taken away from power. Mark Antony had differing beliefs about Caesar.
This political cartoon is a reference to President Donald Trump’s decision to impose new tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from the European Union, Mexico, and Canada. These three entities are USA’s closest allies and President Trump’s decision to shun their alliance in favor of money-grubbing is a testament to the poor reception of the new tariffs. In the political cartoon, the cartoonist Steve Breen uses the stock images of allies, the liquid gold, and a representation of President Trump’s head to show that Trump has no regard for diplomacy.
Handelsman constructed the cartoon in a precise way to guide readers, to view the cartoon in a particular order. Handelsman purposely made the dialogue large, so the reader’s attention can be directed to it first. In Handelsman cartoon the two captions read, “BRING IT ON”. The only difference is that Handelsman added captions to Obama’s dialogue to add to the meaning of the cartoon. The ultimate meaning that Handelsman is trying to address to us is, that the more changes there is the more it stays the same when referring to the Obama administration. He achieved this by the placement of elements, so we can read the cartoon in a certain way so the information can eventually flow all together. People would find this topic interesting because it
Source one is a political cartoon. The main focus is a giant man eating a burger. The man is dressed in a cowboy hat with the American flag printed on it, handkerchief, and is accessorized with a compass, showing that he is American. His eyes and nose are covered by his hat, leaving only his massive grin apparent. It represents that the man blindly devours anything he can. The meat of the burger is replaced with the world. It’s between his large hands, and moving towards his even larger mouth, showing that it’s about to be eaten. The man's size represents that he has a extreme amount of power. The world's size shows that it’s just another meal for the man, because it is shown to be small and worthless. The man does not see any beauty or worth in the world, besides its ability to provide him another meal, and give him more power. The fact that the burger hasn’t reached his mouth yet, shows that there is a chance to stop the man from devouring it. The author's attitude is mocking. It’s showing the giant to be blind, which means he is slow and incapable. The globe is also shown to be helpless, when really it has potential to save itself from the man. The message of this political cartoon is that people have to stop corporations from taking all of the resources, and having the most power. A person that’s blind shouldn’t have an immense amount of responsibility, there for, companies that only have one goal to achieve, should not be aloud to call all
From this statement I feel as though Merkel is very direct and to the point- there is no point in arguing, let’s do something about it. At the same time Merkel puts emphasis on leader-member relations. Previous chancellor Schroeder was known for his extravagant sleigh rides with
